Have to take the little guy to the vet today. He's not eating like he used to.
No more buying beauty stuff, now it's vet bills.

Hi Lianne,
Sorry to hear he isn't feeling well and hope it isn't anything serious. Our pets are part of the family so it is very difficult when they dont' feel well. I had to put my 18 year old yorkie down last month and it was the most difficult thing we have ever done.
Good luck, will keep my fingers crossed the little guy is okay.

Hope your little guy feels better. Last week I took my Scottie "Winnie" to the vet. Winnie is only 3 and has Lymes Disease. He will be fine with Antibiotics. $400.00!!!! I wish I got pet insurance for him when he was a wee one. |

Hope the furry little guy is feeling 100% soon.
Chinchillas are so cute.
I've often considered getting one as a pet. |

Vet bills...I know them well. My doggy had a cast on her leg all summer(replaced and xrayed every 2 weeks) and she was pretty sad hobbling around, I was pretty sad paying all those bills. She's 14 1/2 and I'm hoping she's a miracle dog and will live forever...I can't imagine losing her. I hope your little guy is feeling better soon. |

Thank you everyone for your nice words
The vet isn't sure what's wrong with him. He just told me to hand feed him crushed pellets and baby food and he gave him a shot to stimulate his appetite.
I had another chinchilla get sick before and crazy me spent $1200 on vet bills so they could open his belly to find out the problem. We never did find it, but he's still alive 3 years later.
Winnie, if you get one chinchilla it will turn into more. My 1 turned into 4! I went to a ladies house sunday who had 26!!! and they were all paired boy-girl so she's going to have 100 in a few months!! |

I remember the first time I ever saw a chinchilla at the pet store – I instantly fell in love!! Until that point, I only knew chinchillas as something that they killed and skinned to make fur coats. After I saw the real-life chinchilla, I wondered how anyone could slaughter anything so adorable. I’m against killing any animal for vanity...except for cows. Vegans, please don’t flood me with hate mail, but I like a nice medium-rare Porterhouse steak every once in a while, and so since they’re killing the cow anyway, I believe it’s okay to wear leather shoes or carry a leather handbag – waste not, want not!
Anyway, do you happen to have a photo of your chinchilla that you can post for all of us to see? What did you name them?

I know what you mean. My cat will be 14 next spring...he’s still pretty healthy but I know he can’t live forever, and I’m just dreading the day because I know it’s going to kill me. I had to put his sister down two summer ago and that was painful enough, but Domino is my “special” baby boy....God, I don’t even want to think about it!
Pets are a special joy, but they can also bring immense heartache.... |

All my animals are my family..even my rooster! (my chickens are pets, and eggs...not for meat) I can't stand it when they get sick..It's stressful and makes me feel like a bad mommy.
I can't figure out how to put a pic here but you can see all of my chins here:
http://www.chins-n-quills.com/forums/gallery.php?do=show&userid=2756
The pure black on is the sick one, his name is Baby.
The light beige one is Duster and the gray ones are ChiChi and Dali.
Cakecate,
What you say is funny one day at a pet I told the guy that I had 4 of them and he asked "what are you going to do, make slippers?" I took this toy rubber ball at the counter and smoked him in the shoulder and have never got back. That was 6 years ago. (I was 19 and must've been PMSing really bad!)

Gorgeous!
I never realised chinchillas came in so many different colours. I've only ever seen the standard grey or beige before. I love the look of the homo ebony variety. A lovely glossy sheen to their little furry coats.
What are they like as pets? They look so cuddly but I remember reading somewhere they aren't necessarily keen at being handled all the time. Is this true? |

All chins have different personalities.
I have one who doesn't like to be pet or picked up, but once you pick her up she'll cling to you like crazy. She'll sit on my shoulder while I watch tv.
Another is a social guy who jumps out of his cage anytime it's opened. He LOVES to be pet and played with.
Another is a cuddly little guy, but only on HIS terms. If he doesn't want to be touched or held he'll let you know. He likes me and my boyfriend, but nobody else. He's my favourite.
The sick on is a sweetie. He doesn't like being pulled out of the cage but once out he'll cuddle and give kisses.
I've seen some mean chins that bite as soon as you get near. It all depends on where you get them from. My most social chin I raised from day 1. All depends how much interaction they have with the breeder. I find pet store chins least social because they don't get handled. I only got 1 from a pet store and he's the cranky one... |

Awww, I hope it's getting better.
I have to admit that I thought you were talking about cats. There's a breed of cat called Chinchilla and it wasn't until I googled today (when you wrote something about keeping them in cages) that I discovered what a chinchilla REALLY is. I've never seen one before and we don't have them here, but now that I've seen one I WANT ONE!!!! They're gorgeous! |

I wanted to get a Chinchilla some time ago. I forget why, but I was dissuaded for some reason, and opted for a Sugar Glider instead. Mabsy, I am sure you know what that is!
I think I didn't think Chinchillas would bond. Which is a shame, because my glider never ended up bonding -- probably due to being raised in a pet store. Those Chinchillas are SO cute!!! I want one now, but I think my cat would be VERY unhappy! |

He's not better today, we're going back to the vet tomorrow.
Mabsy, they don't have any chins in australia? They are quite popular in hong kong and singapore!
Chimera, I've never seen a sugar glider in person..but in their pictures they look kinda scary. For some reason they remind me of bats! I hear that they make good pets if they're socialized well.
I personally think with most pets you should go to breeders instead of a pet store. You may pay more but you get a higher quality of animal for both health and temperment. SPCA is good too, but you need to spend a lot of time to make sure it's a good animal and it can take a lot of time to socialize them. I like breeders because they are careful about who they give their animals to..so there's a lesser chance of the person giving up the animal or abusing it. |

Chimera - yep I know those!!! They're really cute! I haven't seen them in any pet shops here though. Mind you we have plenty of possums in the garden each night (probably not of the gliding variety though - and if they were then they aren't anymore because they've been overfed! ).
Lianne - nope, no chins. Have never seen one but I would really like to. Did you know it's also illegal to have a hamster in Australia?! I was not impressed when I moved here and found THAT out! I hope your little one gets better soon! I'm taking my dog to the vet tomorrow morning as well (but it's just the usual yearly vaccs etc). |

Yeah, that was my reaction too! Australia considers hamsters to be agricultural pests - therefore keeping them is not allowed. You can get ginea pigs though and mice (and rats ) - just not hamsters |

Well, maybe that's a blessing in disguise. Their short life expectancy can be very difficult to deal with. You only get to have them as your furry little friend for about 2 years (on average) before they pass over to hamster heaven. |

Yeah, I had some when I was a kid and I remember being absolutely devastated when they died. Then the whole thing would start all over again with a new one after a few months. Still wish I could have one here - they're gorgeous especially when they're stockpiling their food in their mouth |

chinchillas may be considered agricultural pets then too because so many people raise them for fur.
The lil guy seems to be doing a bit better, but I'm still having to jam food down his throat. I hate doing it because he doesn't like it...but there's not much else I can do. |

This is the only kind of fur coat that I’d be willing to wear! I thought about this when I read about Lianne’s post about her friend with 26 chinchillas....
http://www.richardsfault.com/2004/11/louisiana-fur-coat-fun-video-received.html
My brother had a couple of hamsters when I was a little kid. They’re names were “Perry” and “Willard.” My mom was terrified of them, though. One time they got out of their hamster “habitat” and got loose in the house – my mom checked us into a hotel for the night because she absolutely refused to sleep in the same house where they were running loose. I stopped being fond of them myself, after Perry bit me while I was feeding him graham crackers and I had to go to the emergency room for a tetanus shot...I’d have liked them even less if I’d ended up having to go thru the series of rabies’ shots, too, but fortunately that wasn’t necessary. It turned out that “Willard” was actually “Wilhemina,” though! I was brushing my teeth one morning (my brother kept the hamster cage in our bathroom) and I saw all these little feet sticking out from under Willard...closer inspection revealed a handful of baby hamsters. Unfortunately, Willard/Wilhemina promptly ate them. That was the end of hamsters in my house!
Hey, do they have raccoons outside of North America? I have a family of raccoons that I feed every night (it’s either throw them some doggy kibble at night or have them tump over the garbage cans!) and I utterly adore them – they’re SO cute!!! Unfortunately, you can’t keep raccoons as pets because they’re passive carriers of the rabies virus, meaning if you try to get a raccoon vaccinated it will actually get rabies! So I have to settle for admiring them for a couple feet away....I also have a couple of possums that come up and eat the raccoons’ leftovers, but somehow they’re not quite as cute!

I like that type of fur coat. It looks like mink to me.
The little guy is still sick. This week we're giving him a shot everyday so that he will hopefully eat on his own.
I love the little guy so much, I'd do anything to make him feel better. |
