My personal mantra:
"I live in my own little world. It's okay, they know me there".
But my favorite is by Maya Angelou:
"People may forget what you say but they will never forget how you made them feel."
May not be the exact word for word, but basically that is it in a nutshell.
I try to remember that here in the forum as well (or anywhere in a text, email, online). Do not hide behind your words, pretend you are face to face. Would you say the same things? |

I didn't know this window would take those Hellenic characters. Thanks panos. That's better. |

I also kind of like what Kassy has in her signature line. I was trying to think of whose line that was just this morning. I don't have one of those things, either. |

I'm thinking of taking it out though and putting in my daughters websites.. Seems folks are allowed to advertise with reckless abandon these days... |

Do both. There's room. I like it, it fits, wouldn't take it out.
I also like that sig line that I think Keliu has about the new miracle cream that gets rid of wrinkles...you smear on the mirror. |

Thanks fawnie, I have so many favorites, most from Nietsche, Buddha, Jung, Rilke, Christ, many female writers...two spring to mind at this very moment:
"And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life." - JK Rowling
"In Vino, Veritas" - Latin phrase (in wine, there is truth!)

Came across this old fave again today:
"Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as “bad luck.”
Robert Heinlein |

Or you can say it this way:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
- Margaret Mead |

But change is an ambiguous word. Sometimes things change for the better...or sometimes things just change.
One time I got this fortune in a cookie from a Chinese restaurant. It said: "Your luck changed completely today."
None of us really take stuff like that seriously, but it was more interesting than the usual fortune. My first thought upon reading that was "Yay!! Goody! My luck has changed!"
Then I stopped. Wait a minute. My luck isn't really all that bad. I'm healthy, productive, reasonably prosperous, got a secure job, I'm not too ugly, etc. I don't get everything I want but who does? Is change something I really want? Which way is the change going to go...? And so on.
Small committed groups are not always invested in change for the general good...sometimes it's change for the betterment of themselves and to heck with everyone else. Sad but true. Personally, I like my change spelled out a little more explicitly from small, committed groups.
But I do like that quote. Within the caveat that the groups are working for the general good, it's a very good one. |

There are so many quotes and poems I had collected/saved over the years but much to my horror I seem to no longer have that treasured record. I suspect the file in which I had them saved was accidentally deleted since I cannot find it. Sadly I didn't know a lot of them by heart, nor can I remember those I knew on command. So I am thankful for this thread as it has given me material for my new collection.
Anyway, every now and then, a quote I knew or part of it will come to mind as just happened now. This little verse is one of those I know by heart. I learned it way back in elementary school when I came across it in one of our English class textbooks:
"He who knows and knows he knows,
He is a wise man; seek him.
He who knows and knows not he knows,
He is asleep; wake him.
He who knows not and knows he knows not,
He is a child; teach him.
He who knows not and knows not he knows not,
He is a fool; shun him." |
