i am a non-smoker all my life. but my dad and uncles they have all been smokers since they were teenage.
its only 3 years ago when 1 of my uncle decided to quit smoking due to some health problem. for a person who have been smoking for 40 over years, at least 2 pack of cigs per day its almost impossible for him to quit. it took alot of determination, love & support from the family before he finally succeeded. it took him 1.5years to quit and to date he have stayed away from cigs for 1.5years.
tv commercial often advertise some sort of sweets etc.. to help replace the cigs. imo and what i have seen, it is totally useless. my uncle started on a strict diet, lots of greens and fruits. go for jogging every morning and get himself involved in activities to "distract" his attention from cigs. slowly he began to cut down the number of sticks that he take per day and eventually he stops taking any completely.
whenever he felt like giving up, thats when the family comes in to give him the moral support and encouragement. the road to quit smoking is never easy but if there is a will, there is way.
my family and i are still "working" on my father, hoping he would quit smoking one day. |

I am a non-smoker, but have watched my husband struggle with it for years. He has quit for a few months at time with Allen Carr's book, patches, gum etc. BUT his best success so far has been with the new prescription Chantix, it's new and he got it as soon as it went on the market and feels like it has been a success. |

Did he experience any of the adverse effects?
nausea, headache, vomiting, flatulence (gas), insomnia, abnormal dreams, and dysgeusia (change in taste perception). |

charis ~ is [Chantix] avaiable off the shelf or require a doctor's prescription? my dad is already in his mid-50s, can he still take that as well?
does your husband feels tired or restless when he first started on the med? |

It does require a prescription. He's in his late 40's no problems with age. He did not feel tired or restless - he just walked in the door and confirmed this. He only has good things to say about it. |

yah! we had hope he can quit it soon. but being stubborn as he is, we just have to spend more time to talk to him.
he have been coughing quite badly lately and we suspect it could be something to do with the cigs. |

Just curious, but why do you want to quit smoking when you don't smoke...? |

I get the impression you are trying to bump up your EDS discount by the amount of posts you are responding to without really saying anything at all. I can understand this but really you should try to enter into the spirit of things & actually tell us a bit about yourself or tell us what you are using & what it is doing for you. You might actually find you enjoy it. |

To everyone who wants to quit smoking:
I have been cigarette free for 5 years and the only reason I don't start again is because of my dentist - who can't believe how good my gums are now (and trust me if you have ever had gum surgery you would quit smoking asap) and my Esthetician who still raves about how much better my skin is.
These two things have kept me from starting up again. |

Lots of helpful replies here! There is also a new prescription med that helps a lot! It's called Chantix. It blocks the nicotine receptors in your brain (unlike other products that contain nicotine, and you "step down" while using them). My Mom has smoked for 54 years and is having great success with it. Good luck! |

I had hypnosis almost 16 years ago and it worked immediately! Up until then I had smoked almost a large pack of cigarettes a day.
The Dr. that did the hypnosis was a well known MD who had done quite a bit of hypnosis for patients with chronic pain and wasn't a voodoo quacky Doctor |

Wow! Hypnosis didn't help me quit at all!
Although it DID help me "enjoy exercise" when I got hypnotized for that.
I quit smoking with SmokeAway. It's an herbal blend, you start taking 4 pills 3 times a day, and are free to keep smoking, because within a day or so, you'll lose the craving. Painless.
I also found chewing on cinnamon sticks helped with the hand fiddling/oral boredom.
Avoiding friends who smoke for the first month was crucial, because it's so easy to bum just one cig and then you're right back...
Oh! And subliminal programming CDs, on repeat play, 24 hours a day. All you hear is the ocean, but underneath there are voices whispering "You hate cigarettes. Cigarettes hold as much appeal as cat turds" After I'd quit I gave the CDs to a friend whose mother smoked. He set up his CD player for repeat play, and even though his mom had no idea why he was playing ocean sounds constantly (he peeled the label in case she peeked) she quit spontaneously within two weeks. |

My husband had acupuncture and quit that day and hasn't smoked in 10 years.
I just quit one day yelled and snarled at everyone for two weeks and drove like an idiot then I was fine. |

My husband started Chantix a few days ago. I will let you know how he does.
I quit smoking October 1. I have not had ONE cigarette. Cold turkey was the only way for me to go. Unfortunately, I have gained some weight. The weight gain is not all do to quitting smoking. I was off my feet for many months recovering from foot surgery.
Not a day goes by that I don't crave a cigarette. Now, I can honestly say I will NEVER smoke again.
Good luck for anyone thinking of quitting. You CAN do it. |

I smoked for many years, tried everything to quit and was never successful UNTIL.....I decided to get pregnant. I quit cold turkey never looked back and 10 years later I am still cigarette free. While I wouldn't suggest that everyone go to such great lengths for motivation, it worked for me! |

I've been smoking for almost 17 yrs, reading all these (still haven't finished reading...) ...I do think I should quit. Knew that is not good to health, skin, most of my friend don't smoke and I hate the smelt, the smoke...For me, it's really a bad habit, I smoke 10-15 a day, and half of the time, I just leave it on the astray. I never try to quit before and I'm sure if I can do it.
Congratulation on those who finally made it, I'm proud of you. |
