I don't shave my nose because noses don't wrinkle like the rest of your face! The skin stay pretty tight I've been using Retin A for 20 years now. I think shaving is a great accompanyment to using Retin A because you can shave off the peelies. I do have crows feet, (hey, I'm 54) which are deeper wrinkles, and shaving may not help a whole lot with them, but it sure couldn't hurt, so I never miss doing that area. I don't know what they would look like now if I hadn't started shaving them 13 yrs ago. |

Well I am going to be 53 so I need all the help I can get ,its kinda like diving into the pool for the first time....you procrastinate and procastinate before you take the plunge.I may do it in small increments, like my chin first and see how that goes....my real fear is growing a beard. |

I've been including my nose in the shaving because I thought it would be good for pore reduction. No? |

The article states Japanese women shave their faces thats why they look young,do they REALLY do that?Is there anyone from Japan that knows about that? They never really seemed to even have facial hair....I always thought Asian people looked younger because they simply had plumper faces, thus less wrinkles. |

When Philosophy first came out with their peels about 10 years ago, they actually suggested that, instead of wiping off the peel, you shaved it off! And if that scared you they gave you a little plastic spatula to help "shave it off."
I heard around the same time that why men look younger to women generally is because they are always shaving/exfoliating their skin.
I admit to shaving my face but I have very, very, very light, soft blonde hair that doesn't really show up. So I do this about once every 2-3months. But it works well for me! |

I don't think shaving your nose is such a great idea...too risky in terms of cutting yourself and no, I don't think shaving it will help with pore reduction. I shave pretty much everyday although my Dermatologist recommends 3-4 times a week. No, I don't use shaving cream!!! That's what I pictured too when I first heard about women doing it! Actually after reading a lot of the posts from women shaving dry faced, I've been trying that. In the past I just used a little cleaning lotion on my face and did it wet. I think it works fine both ways. LucyLuc, I promise you won't grow a beard. If you do, then Ripleys Believe it or Not may want to talk to you! |

Ok, I will stop shaving my nose!
I shave while my cleansing oil is on my face. Do you think that's appropriate, mountaingirl? |

I don't shave my nose.
I use my oil cleanser to remove make-up. Then I follow up with my cream cleanser and while the cleanser is still on, I shave it off, then rinse. |

Catski...I think oil is fine. Try it dry too, and also try it with a mild cleanser. I'm doing the combination. When I'm in the shower, I'll use lotion, if I'm at the sink, I'm doing it dry. The main thing: JUST DO IT! |

mountaingirl,
thanks for introducing me to shaving lol...
i was just wondering... what do you use to shave? a women's razor? or those smaller ones you use to shave your brows?
and will shaving help lighten acne scar/or discoloration?
thanks so much |

mountaingirl thanks for this thread! I had heard about shaving but I thought it was just a joke. I have always been told that shaving will make the hair grow thicker and darker. Based on the answers here it seems that is not correct. I am horrified to try this since I have olive skin and dark hair but it does make sense that shaving would take the dead cells off of your skin! |

Not sure about the trends of the Japanese. But lots of women from other Asian countries don't shave their faces and they still look young. I think Asian people tend to look younger because their skin is naturally less susceptible to sun damage than Caucasian skin. You might have noticed that black people's skin look even younger. |

Well my Chinese aunt is 72 and does not even have a hint of a nasal line and barely any wrinkles.I am half Chinese and half Italian so I am a little hairy. My hair is dark and long and fine.I usually had bleached it and trimmed it a little...waxing made me break out.I do believe shaving(like facial exercises) can make you look younger so thats why I am doing it,it really just makes sense.I may do electrolysis on moustache though because it seems to grow back the next day! The Yag laser did not make any hair drop so I will probably give up on that and go with the bic...and WHY do you have to shave down and not up?It seems like you would exfolitae more shving upwards not downwards.... |

to answer questions: I use any ol razor, bic's, or 3-4 bladers, pink, blue, whatever! I like the ones with lotsa blades best! I don't know if shaving will reduce the visability of acne scars but I don't think it has helped me lighten discolorations. I have a few patchy spots on the side of my face, that won't budge.
Lucyluc...ideally I would try to permanently rid myself of any darker, courser facial hair before beginning the process of shaving. Its hard to believe electrolosis hasn't done it...and I am wondering what kind of waxing process you tried that irritated your skin. |

I used the Sally Hansen wax strips. I am going to call and find out about electrolysis this morning for my moustache...that is just so unfeminine and has to go for good! |

OK I'm intrigued! Do you go over the same area a couple times for the exfoliation? Do you do it before or after washing your face? Do you put anything on afterwards to help with irritation from it? Like an aftershave. If you do it all the time, how do you know how the hair would grow back it if doesn't have a chance to grow back?
I don't have a hairy face and my peachfuzz is not noticible. I'm afraid that it would make the peachfuzz noticeable, but if it helps that much I guess it would be worth doing it daily and always keeping all the hair away anyways. However about men aging differently I never really notice that. It wouldn't do anything for anything other then their chin area. The eyes and forehead is usually what shows the age most on people. My husband is only in his 30's and he has very noticable crows feet around his eyes and my brother is in his 20's and he already has crows feet too, especially when he smiles. I don't. I would tell my husband if I did it. He'd laugh but he'd get it if I explained how it works and why. It makes sense.

The only thing I noticed about the hairs is (and this is just because I have a magnifying mirror that is 10X!!! it really shows up every PORE and hair, and I think I got it at Walmart, just a little round one that has little suction cup things) the hairs grew back in crazy directions after shaving for a few times - instead of growing back in a smooth downward direction, now the hairs look like they've grown back in all kinds of crazy directions. But they did NOT grow back in darker or thicker or coarser. |
That doesn't sound good. The one thing about some people who's hair grows back darker or is darker on some parts of their body I think it's because the hair was not inherently lighter before but rather bleached from the sun. Just like new growth on our head is always darker then the ends of our hair. Since there is little or light hair on other areas of our body they have more exposure to the sun to lighten them. I've always noticed that the very little hair I have on my arms are completely white, while the hair on my legs that I shave is very dark brown. If I didn't shave my legs and exposed them to the sun more the hair would probably be a lot lighter like my arms. On my arms some of the hairs are dark but most are all blonde and it's more like long fuzz, it doesn't bother me. I've never thought about shaving my arms, I guess because it's not socially taboo for girls to have hair there unlike their legs and armpits. Kind of strange if I think about it. Where it's ok and not thought of as freaky to show the natural hair growth on certain parts of the body and not others. |
