Hi Mabsy
I must say Mabsy - Im dead chuffed for you. I know all too well the trials and tribulations of going to different hairdressers because I have the MOST DIFFICULT hair to cut on the planet.
My hair is bolt straight and has a tendancy to spike which means means you can see every scissor cut into it, which is not good when youve gone to an inexperienced hairdresser.
However thankfully ive found my hairdresser for life. And she only charges £9 (Im a bloke so it would be cheapish anyway. Now I dont get palpitations every time I visit the hairdresser! .

Don't you just love it when your hairdresser does you right . |

I went to a new hairdresser once and asked for 'very slight layering'. I told her I didn't spend time styling my hair and I wanted something easy. I left the salon with a 'rachel' shag (long after this went out of style)! It was so horrible, I haven't risked having more than plain, straight, long hair since!! |

Congratulations Mabsy! It does sound like you found the hairdresser from heaven!
My experience wasn't quite that positive. The color is just a bit too dark and the highlights didn't come out as dramatic as I like. He said that if it wasn't right to come back and he would re-do it at no charge, but I probably won't do that since, for other reasons, I don't plan to change from my regular hairdresser. Also, he is located where my facialist is, and I will keep running into him and I don't want to go back and have him do free stuff and then never return, and then have to see him about once every couple of weeks. If I liked everything else and was truly considering returning to him, I definitely would go back and have him do repair work.
The cut was OK, but his stying of it at the time was horrendous. That's not such a big deal if the cut is good enough that I can go home and restyle it, and this cut is OK, but he evidentally didn't listen when I said about what I wanted or look closely at the pictures I brought because the style was nothing like the pictures nor was the color, and didn't match my style at all. I re-did it this morning and did a better job myself.
What really bugs me is that before my appointment with my regular hairdresser comes, I have to go to a business meeting and meet people who have heard of me, but we've never met face to face. Also, I will have to be speaking in front of some of these people. But, most people will think I look just fine, it's just me that knows it's not what I want.
Another reason, the main one, that I won't go back to this man is his personality and manner. I don't expect to be treated like a queen, but this man has a rather negative personality and I make it a point not to subject myself to that when I can avoid it, and I certainly don't want to pay for someone's time who is negative. I really felt his manner bordered on being just plain rude. I had overall color and then highlights after that. Neither time did he ever offer me a magazine to read while I sat there for 30 min. each time. He fixed himself a hot chocolate and never even offered me a drink of water. Part of the time while I was processing, he left the room without saying anything to me at all and stayed gone. Most hairdressers will at least say something like, "I have to leave and do (whatever); be back in a few minutes."
The positive thing was that his price was about 1/3 less than my regular hairdresser, but in this case, I will stay with the higher price and consider it worth it. The main positive is that in the two experiences with other hairdressers, I have re-affirmed to myself just how good my current hairdresser really is.

Oh Judy,
I am sure you still look great. I don't blame you for not wanting to go back even for a freebie. Having your hair done should be a pleasurable, pampering experience that makes you feel good. Sounds like this Guy failed on all points. Why do some hairdressers make you feel like they are doing you a favour, when in actual fact they are working for you and getting well paid for it. It has taken me years to find someone I like that makes me feel relaxed and I can talk to and cuts my hair the way I ask. I know you have your own that you like and it is unfortunate that he was unavailable when you needed him. I hope you wont let this get you down too much. |

Oh no, I won't let it get me down at all. It probably looks fine to everyone else, but it's just not what I want. I've always been picky about my hair. It's kinda like, if the hair looks good, I feel good all over, but if the hair doesn't look right, it really puts me in a mood!
The main thing I try to avoid is any hairdresser fixing my hair in a way that matches my actual age.
I simply do not feel my actual age and certainly don't want to look it!
I'll probably go to that business meeting and have someone rave on about how great my hair looks.
Oh well, it won't be too long till my appointment with my regular and that will fix it. She is truly excellent, but is about 30 min. from the house and about the highest in town, so I was just trying to see if I could save some time and money. But, unfortunately, it seems that will not happen, at least now right now. My main other problem with her is that if you don't make an appointement about six weeks ahead, forget it. I guess that's because she is so good.

I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience Judy! Personality and manner are very important. Even if the cut is great, a hairdresser with a crappy attitude can ruin the whole visit. Making himself a hot chocolate and not offering you anything is just plain rude! And, of course, if you can go home and restyle it better than the hairdresser then - Houston, we have a problem! |
