I was sitting here thinking how bad I was with my purchases...my bobbi brown lipglosses in every colour bar two (I loooove them!!!), and my stila lip glazes' and rouge pots, my juicy tubes and my list of lipsticks, moisturisers etc etc...but you have made me so much better!!! I don't feel so guilty now...thank you!
Oh, an in the theme of the actual thread, I am such a brand flirt...I have not a loyal bone in my body! I like to change things up all the time (although i'd fight you if you tried to take away my bobbi brown lip glosses Mad ). Anyway, variety is the spice of life...and how would we know if we didnt try new things Smile

Oh, God. It’s worse than I thought. I just remembered another one of my dirty little obsessions: hair care products. You name it, and I’ve probably had it gracing the “reject” drawers in my bathroom at one time or another. If not the specific product/brand, then the equivilent in some other line.

I think I can say, without fear of contradiction, that my hair product * spam alert * is even worse than any of the others combined. I am truly a hair product whore. It makes me sick when I think of the amount of money I’ve spent in the last 10-15 years on hair products that I’ve used maybe once or twice, decided I didn’t like them, then tossed them in a drawer or cabinet to be forgotten until the next time that I have to pack up and move.

I mean, when I was packing up my stuff last month after we sold the house, I filled up two of those big, green, residential garbage cans with all of my rejects of hair, lip and nail products. I wonder how many starving children in East-Bumblef*ck-Outer-Mongolia or Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka that I could have saved with the money I’ve wasted on my vanity all these years??

All right, I admit it: I am the most selfish b*tch on this planet. Embarassed

(You know, they say that confession is good for the soul...right now, I feel like I’m doing those “12 Steps” at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting! The first step is admitting that you have a problem, right??

Try not to feel too bad about it, Carrie. Many of us here have the same problem, I'd say, but to varying degrees. Your right, admitting there is a problem is the first step Laughing , but I am not ready to do that yet. We are still good people!!!

Actually, I've been eyeballing the Stila Convertible Color blush/lip compact in "Petunia," although -- needless to say -- I wouldn't be buying it for my cheeks! (Hey, Blush Maven, have you tried the Stila CCs and how do they work on lips? Are they too drying, like the NARS Multiple?) Payday is tomorrow and I haven't decided how I'm going to spend it yet....I think I need some family and friends to stage an intervention.

Allow me to try to kill off this little lemming for you. Honestly, I think you can get something WAY better than the Stila CCs if you are wanting something for the lips. I've tried them on the lips once - didn't care for that at all. They are drying after a while and there are far better products and colors out there for the lips IMO.

I am relieved to see I'm not the only one with cosmetic fetishes.

My top fetishes are:

-perfume: I have a total * spam alert *, and spend a lot of time cruising fragrance counters. I am amassing quite the collection of bottles.

-lipsticks: I'm always on a quest for that perfect lip colour. I have dozens stashed in bathroom cabinets & handbags. I do use them, but tend to misplace them easily.

-nailpolishes: one of my favorite things about summer is painting my toenails! I rarely paint my finger nails, because polish wears off much faster on my fingers. I have all kinds of fun colours which I love to rotate.

I love Trish McEvoy cosmetics. I am always obsessing over them and constantly checking to see if they have new colors. The funny thing is I hardly wear makeup!!

For your nails...fingers and toes, I swear by a top coat. I have been using Hard ROCK top coat, purchases in a beauty store - for professional use apparently, and my nail polish just doesn't come off anymore (in fact it takes a tad more work to get it off with remover also). FYI:although it says its fast drying, you need to give it at least a half an hour before using your nails properly, i.e.cleaning, digging or doing up buttons/fly, as the polish will smudge. It gives it a really nice shine too - like a real manicure

Okay, I have a new favorite lipgloss. In my above-list of trangressions, I forgot to mention that I went through a brief period of being enamoured of both Lola lip glosses (bought the mini “Gloss Menagerie” collection and the keychain-lip glosses in red and clear) and the Smashbox collection of mini glosses. I actually still love the Lola glosses (not at all sticky, decent staying power and fun minty scent/flavor), but – like most of my lip products – I eventually forgot I owned it as a new lip product-du-jour took its place.
Well, yesterday I had to go to Ulta to try and find the endangered “Lash Dew” mascara-type stuff from Tony & Tina (no luck) and to look for a product for Mabsy to help grow her eyelashes back after an ill-advised foray into Napoleon mascara. Managed to find the Ardell Lash Growth Accelerator for Mabsy (and one for me, of course), and even scored the bonus buy when I found two bottles of the amazing, but elusive, “Once Removed” nail polish remover. But, because I cannot help myself, I just *had* to go strolling around the Lola cosmetics display, just to see what was what and if they ever came out with additional colors of the Lola keychain lip glosses, and low-and-behold, I spied a little keychain tube of a color called “Ballet Slippers.” In the tube it looks like an ordinary, bright bubblegum/Pepto Bismol pink, but when I swiped the sample wand over my hand, the color went on much more sheer and enchanting. And since these keychain lip glosses only cost $5 each, I figured WTH and tossed it in my basket. This morning, I decided that my new Ballet Slippers would be my lip product of choice for the day when I put on my face. And it was a very good choice! It just gives my lips a sheer, wash of rosy color. My lips like look I’ve just been given a very thorough kiss and maybe had a bit brush across my boyfriend’s 11-o’clock-shadow. It’s just very fresh looking, innocent yet inticing!

Incidentally, I also saw a GORGEOUS new (?) pink lip gloss shade w/ very faint irridescent shimmer/glimmer from BE, but I can’t remember the name. It might have been “Fresh”? Man, I r-e-a-l-l-y wanted to get that one too, but the CareKate angel on my right shoulder beat out the CareKate devil on my left shoulder during the argument between my Id and my super-ego on whether or not I needed a new lip gloss. Finally a compromise was reached between both sides and it was decided that if the new Ebay lip plumper “Lip Pulse” actually worked, we would reward and show off our new and improved, pulsing, pillow-lipped pout with a tube of this new BE gloss. Unless something else comes along that grabs our fickle attention.... Anyway, I wanted to ask if anyone else had seen or purchased this new BE lip gloss shade and if it looked as good on the lips as it did on the back of my hand where I tested the sample??

The topcoat that I swear by is the Seche Vite fast drying topcoat, or the equivilent from Poshe. I always thought that you had to sacrifice shine when it came to those fast-dry topcoats, but the Seche Vite taught me otherwise! This stuff is just amazing because it dries up to 5 layers of polish to the touch with 5 minutes, and dries it completely (so you can tie your shoes or dig in your purse for your car keys without a nick, smudge or other catastrophe) with 30-45 minutes! I don’t know if the SV and/or Poshe are only available in the U.S., but they both get raves on MUA. I actually own both of them but if I had to chose, I’d give the Seche Vite the slightest edge.

Something else you need to get from your manicures and pedicures is a diamond nail file. Diamancel makes one (they are the folks who brought us the miracle Diamancel #11 Tough Buffer foot file that Lianne recently reviewed), but I think it costs around $15-$20USD. Just like the Diamancel foot file, I discovered that Luxor also makes a less expensive equivilent of the Diamancel nail file. You can order both the Luxor diamond foot file ($5.99 + S&H) and the Luxor diamond nail file ($2.99USD + S&H) fromwww.folica.com. I’ve tried tons of nail files (including glass and ceramic) and emery boards, but this diamond nail file is in a class all its own!

Carrie....have you ever thought of writing your own beauty product review and DIY book? Your writing is truly creative and entertaining! I've just read through this whole thread and am still laughing. You all are quite hysterical. Now I don't feel quite as alone on this cosmetic/skin care * spam alert * thing we all seem to have going for us. Vincent Longo's lip stuff is next on my list!
Current cosmetic fetishes:
**Lip stuff: balms, tints, sticks, pencils...MUST be moisturizing...cannot tolerate anything that is drying.
**Fragrances: current fav is Vera Wang Sheer Veil...light and lovely.
**Mascara: this is my love/hate product. Constant search for HG.
**Blush: prefer cream blushes for my dry skin.

I really like the Lola keychain lip glosses as well. I've got one (can't remember what shade it was anymore) and love the minty feeling and the texture is nice as well.

ETA: I should probably add lash conditioners to my list of product fettishes now.... Embarassed Thank you for getting those Carrie

After getting a few more Stila shadows today, it has come to my attention that blush is the least of my problems.... Apparently, I have a fascination with Stila (specifically) eyeshadows... yet, I usually just use the same two everyday, if I use any at all! Rolling Eyes This is the largest "one brand" collection of eyeshadows I have, everything else just pales in comparison (quantity-wise).

I only own about 6 different eyeshadows. Embarassed
Now I want to see a photo of all of Carekate's lip products. Very Happy

I use Stila "Cloud" eyeshadow -- nice pale neutral grey. I just got the Stila Convertible Blush in Petunia -- it's a cream/gel and while the color's nice, it has a sticky texture, like a Trish McEvoy blush I've tried (but with more pigment/color in the Stila). Maybe I'll use it in the winter when my skin is dryer. But in continuing my blush fetish, I also recently purchased T.LeClerc powder blush in Rose Sablee and I really like it! The color is a nice neutral rose and the powder is finely-milled. I'll use this a lot!

For me, it is full-coverage pink lipsticks - not glosses, not semi-sticks -- full-out coverage lipstick...and the pinker the better...my faves are Arden's Pink Vibrations, any of the matte pinks from Serge Louis Alvarez and a Versace pink that seems to have disappeared from the planet..I have a ridiculous collection of lipsticks....I keep trying to "like" a natural look on my lips (hence my ridiculously large collection of nude shades..) but I keep going back to the pinks - clear, bright bubble gum colours..no mauves allowed and nothing fuscia...just clear bright pink (sigh...)...it's so bad that I'm known for it...even by colleagues who don't know my name...."It's the woman over there with the bright pink lipstick...." (sigh...)..I can't let go of the pink lipstick....thank GOD I don't have "80's hair" or I'd be a complete mess!!!!

No, it's time she quit her current job and became a professional makeup artist!! Good God, Mabsy, it looks like you've already got all the appropriate tools for a career change! I mean, didn't you say you also have a lovely collection of different kinds of makeup brushes, too?? Shock I think my collection of lip products could be considered quite tame in comparison -- at least I spread the love around to a lot of different brands!! Very Happy Of course, that could just mean that I'm a faithless whore....

BTW, for those of you who were waiting with baited breath to see if good would prevail over evil, you will be saddened to learn that the poor CareKate angel was not able to sustain a second assault to her defences.

While I was out shopping for LoopyLori and Melissa49 last Friday, the lure of that BE LipGloss (the shade is called “Garden,” BTW) became too much to resist and stuck it in my basket along with all the other items. I tried to convince myself that it was simply a reward for being able to find all of the items on my shopping list at a single stop at a single store (that’s a whole different kind of thrill!), but we all know that I would have bought it regardless of whether or not I’d had to stop at ten different stores to get everything on my list....

Of course, now I’m regretting the whole thing and I’m pretty sure I’m going to return the gloss because it didn’t quite live up to the promise it appeared to possess when I was admiring the color on the back of my hand (does anybody ever actually use the little individual gloss swabs that most cosmetic stores offer to actually apply the product to their lips? I don’t care if the little swab or wand is sterile, the container that you’re dipping the swab into has just got to be crawling with cooties!!). The little opalescent shimmer that I could see in my hand did not show up at all on my lips, but it could be because now that I’m using that Ebay Lip Pulse plumper stuff that forces all of the blood to the surface of your lips so they look all rosy red and heavily pigmented cancels out the subtlety of the shimmer. You might need to wear it on a lip that has no natural pigment or which has had a lip primer applied beforehand so that the color shows up true (I had tried Urban Decay’s Primer Potion for eye makeup on my lips at one point and it worked pretty well, but I never got around to buying a separate UDPP for my lips only). The point is that the BE gloss color is nice, but it’s not unique and I already have probably dozens of other lip glosses that are the same color, so what’s the point in keeping this one, right?

For the record, the BE lip gloss in “Garden” is a lovely warm, medium, peachy-pink with the faintest touch of opalescent shimmer (or is it glimmer? I can never remember which one is the more subtle) that probably wouldn’t show up but on the most naturally pale (or primer-ed) lips. I’m not wowed by the consistency of the BE gloss, either. It’s neither too thick nor too thin, and there isn’t really much stickiness to it, for those who care about such things.

All in all, it’s a decent enough lip gloss, but definitely not worth $15USD because I can find a great many “decent” lip glosses for less than five bucks at my local drugstore. Perhaps if it had been a lovely, warm, pinky-peach (remember, peach and orange shades are my Waterloo) with faintest touch of opalescent shimmer, I might have felt more compelled to keep it in my collection, but...

On the bright side, if I return the BE gloss, that means that I will suffer no guilty pangs if I succumb to the charms of the next lip product that catches the eye of my very healthy super-ego. So let the hunt begin anew!!! Very Happy

Laughing Yeah, I think it's more likely that I just need to get a new hobby! I do have a large collection of brushes as well so I have plenty to experiment with when it comes to eyeshadow, I'm just lacking the technique Embarassed I still can't do the nice smokey look or anything that involves using more than one eye shadow on the lid. It's just (a) wash of eye shadow, followed by (b) line with eyeshadow. And, yes, this is why most of them look barely used. I do assure you though that there are differences between the shades, they just don't come across that well on the photo....

Carrie - you caved! Don't feel bad though, we have to treat ourselves every so often Smile Besides, with all the stress with house/work you deserved to get one for yourself. I'm just glad that you don't think it's fantastic and I don't have to try it Razz

I like that..."every so often" can be so subjective...I choose to think of every so often as once a week at least, and again when I make an achievement at work, again when I feel yuck, and in fact whenever I see something I want...lets face it, we will always find an excuse to purchase Laughing Dont worry carrie, we all would have done the same....that angel never wins!!!

Laughing I'm the same! My other half complains because I always exhaust his potential present ideas when I find little "occasions" to buy stuff for myself Smile I just sold my car today so I reckon that is reason enough to celebrate - another opportunity for a little pressie from me to me Smile
