winnie, they're probably not replying because they think you want money.
I know several animal breeders and they always want to know if there's something undesireable in their animals to prevent it from the future...genetic or not, best to let them know anyways.
As for keeping Maggie from moving too much perhaps keep her in one of those large dog crates or in a smaller room in the house with nothing she'll be tempted to jump onto! |

Oh No...I hope little Maggie is recovering well. I hope the breeder does contact you, they should!
Now how on earth are you keeping Maggie quiet??!!! When Gucci was ill I was told to keep him quiet its an impossibility! haha
I hope she is getting better day by day, its so sad when one of our furr-babies is ill.. |

I'm glad you've got her back home Winnie! I hope she recovers well and quickly. I guess the first week or so won't be too bad because her pain levels will help to keep her less active. After that, well, I think you'll just have to try very hard to keep her in a quiet area, away from grandchildren and commotion... |

Sorry to hear about Maggie I hope she improves quickly. My dogs are much more restrained when I put a leash on them. A short one just dragging areound (they were just fixed at 6 mo old). I love dogs and know how you are feeling. My last pet was killed in January and I would have done nearly anything to save her. Has the vet said anything about MSM or other supplements? |

I ordered the Syn Flex supplements for Maggie. The surgeon said some dogs do very well on it. I am totally exhausted and look like hell. A friend gave me a very large crate that was for her Boxer. Maggie already has a crate but this larger one will give her more room. Being a pup Maggie wants to hop around on three legs. She is so sad with the confinement and wearing that cone around her neck so she does not lick her leg. She has her post op next thursday. If all is well I should be able to start her on very short walks. Swimming is the best therapy for Maggie down the road. We live on the water but our beaches don't allow pets. Wish I had a friend with a pool. Where Maggie is so short I was thinking of buying an inexpensive kids pool. All I can do is take one day at a time. If I look at the months of recovery I would go nuts. Until she no longer needs to wear the cone around her neck I don't leave the house. There have been horror stories of pups left in crates with something around their necks. Until next thursday I sleep on the couch downstairs as the crate is too big to go up our stairs.
Keep praying for Maggie to recover so she can have a pain free life.
Thank you all,
Winnie |

Oh Winnie -- you're such a good and devoted mother to Maggie. My cat Buster HATED wearing an Elizabethan collar for 2 weeks, but it really does prevent them from licking and nibbling at their wounds. I wonder if there aren't some kind of booties or something that would inhibit Maggie's jumping when she feels stronger. I know you're reluctant to tether her in any way but you may have to do something like this down the road. Doesn't the vet have any suggestions? |

I have seen a pic of poor Maggie with her neck collar and bad paw/leg. Poor baby she looks very pitiful.
She is lucky to have Winnie to look after her & see her through this traumatic time. I am glad Winnie has a good family to see her through this, it is going to be a long stressful time for all of them.
Hopefully Maggies youth and Winnies love will speed her recovery up. |

Sorry it is such a stressful time. I
don't want to freak you but one of the students here last year left a dog with an elaborate collar on in a crate and somehow it cholked by getting caught on the wire. My crate is plastic sided with mesh grids and I don't think they could hurt themselves in that.
I think as long as you cover anything your dog could get hooked on it should be fine.
I'll pray for a speedy recovery. Supplements helped me when I was recovering from surgery I'll bet the same is true for dogs. |

I have a big, beautiful Yellow Lab named Winston. He is my "angel with paws".......literally a child to me.
I would be devestated if anything unthinkable were to happen to him.
My heart goes out to you and Maggie. We will pray for her.

I put a warm water bottle in with my girls when they were healing they seemed to like to snuggle to it. The trouble is it gets cold fast, I heated it in the micro but didn't want to overheat in case they popped it.
How is she been doing? Please post an update. |

It has been one week today since Maggie's surgery. She is getting use to being confined and wearing her Elizabeth collar. Rather then the crate I have gated off a small hallway. Now Maggie has a small room and I don't have to worry about her E. Collar getting caught on the crate. I carry her outside several times a day to go potty. Right now I have her on a short lead so she can be with me.
I feel a tad better too. I am trying the past few days to get out of the house for a few hours. Maggie has such a long recovery that I would go nuts if I stayed in all day. Now that she has her little room I know she is safe.
She feels fine. If I let her free she would be flying all around the house on three legs and jump on furniture. If Maggie did this her surgery would be useless and I would not give her the chance to have a near normal elbow. We are trying to be really careful with her diet. Because of her inactivity she could gain weight. As Arthritis has already set into her elbow she must stay slim (keep stress off her leg). Maggie will eat anything. She is getting a lot of fresh veggies mixed in her food. Loves carrots for treats.
Next Thursday her stitches come out and I am sure she will be delighted to not wear that bulky collar. Send us positive thoughts that her surgeon will be pleased with her progress so far.
Hanging in there MANY THANKS! It is nice to know so many people care.

I'm so sorry to hear about your little baby, Winnie! Good luck!
I just rescued a precious 3-mo. old Lhasa puppy a few weeks ago. He had been abandoned. He is a healthy, happy little guy. But so far, I'm in for about $300 with all the vet visits/shots/new food/accoutrements. I love him dearly but have to admit, I'm a bit dismayed by all the costs. Hope this is just a big outlay in the beginning.
I have no idea what I would do if they said my bill would be $3000. omigawd. I hope your little one knows what a loving mama he has. |

Hats off to you resueing a pup. Over the years I have taken in a few Scottie that came from Puppy Mills until they found a forever home. I hate to see animals treated badly . If I had Maggie for a few weeks and found out about this condition I probably would have sent her back to the breeder and got my money returned. After having Maggie 6 months and this condition just showed its ugly face I could never send her back or give her to rescue. I love her.
Vet bills are disgraceful IMO. If Maggie was an elderly dog I would have just treated her with meds for her discomfort. Where she is a baby I felt I needed to give her a chance. Believe me I can't handle bills like this without setting us back. Thank God my husband agreed to the surgery 100%.
Today I noticed a little growth on Winnie's head. (three year old Scottie) If I brought him to the vet it would have cost at least 100.00. I would have had to pay for a visit and surely a biopsy. I called his groomer who is also a Vet Tech. I brought Winnie down and she said he has alway had that and most likely a birth mark. She will keep a eye on it for me. Good advice and NO CHARGE.
Good luck with your puppy. |

Glad to hear she is on the mend!
P.S. I really like my vet. He relates to my dogs and is much friendlier than any MD I know. Also, vets charge much less for their work than an MD and the work for operations is harder because the parts are smaller and they do not have as fancy equipment. |

Please don't take what I said the wrong way. I also like my Vet. I wish I purchased pet insurance for Maggie. It is too late now with a preexisting condition. $3,000.00 has just been tough on us. No regrets |

Maggie had her two week post op today. The surgeon was pleased the way Maggie was walking. He told me to buy her a harness as it would be less stress on her joints during physical therapy. I can start walking Maggie 1/4 mile two times a day (if she is comfortable). I was concerned about the bowing of her leg. The surgeon said that her leg might always bow some. His main goal was to get proper aliment of her elbow joint. Maggie does not have to wear the Elizabeth Collar anymore . She is not allowed to do stairs or jump on and off furniture for some time.
All in all I am very pleased. Thank you for all your prayers for wee Maggie
BTW this picture is when I first got Maggie in January. Winnie was not too sure he wanted a sister.
