It's a case of "grass is always greener on the other side". Just like I'm always using self tanners in an effort to look like there is some blood flow to my face Laughing

Sweet_Angel - Kabuki is a (or the?) traditional Japanese theater. The actor's faces are generally painted in pure white.

Some Asians are actually born quite fair, in fact, I find that many Japanese girls look "whiter" than caucasians if they don't tan. The thing is that Asian skin has enough melanin so that when exposed to the sun, pigment production is triggered and the skin turns from fair to medium/dark brown. In that case, skin whiteners might work at turning the skin back to its "original" fairness. Sunscreen is a must though if you want to maintain the untanned skin tone.

i see nothing wrong with people wanting to lighten their skin..not necesarily to 'whiten' it but to by fairer. Tons of people sit in the sun to try to tan, or use the bottle and they never get critisized, so i don't see why people who would want to get fair should be either Wink

Cbeb and clin1202 - completely agree with you. If your orginial skin colour is lighter than current then you may be able to get that back and I don't see anything wrong with that at all (I'm the fake tan queen after all! Smile). I think a lot of people though are under the impression that they can lighten their skin by say 50% regardless of what skin they were born with. And those same people are willing to use harsh or untested products in order to achieve that. That's what worries me, not genuine lightening of skin by people who wish to regain their pre-tan color.

Gurl Genius - if your skin is dull and darker then you might like to try a vitamin C serum (for the dullness) and Dermalogica Microfoliant (skin brigthening ingredients).

Quick question here --- do you know of any Asian Stores in your area? Try them and see if they carry the above soap. Other Filipino Stores also carry them but not a whole lot since only few Filipinos buy them. Or if you know any Filipino friends who can bring back from the Philippines, have them buy it for you. Good Luck!

Katie Mae - you are awesome!!!

I'm a Canadian living in Japan, and here the women go crazy for white skin - not just sunscreen but hats, umbrella, gloves - they even sell this glove that is he full lenght of your arm for when you wear short sleeves and for driving!!

Anyway, last summer I was in Vancouver, and even though I used sunscreen everyday (Clarins, by the way) if obviously wasn't photostable b/c I got a major tan. (For me major is moving up one makeup tone) And now I use sunscreen every day, and my skin is back to it's natual color. So if your pigmentation is from the sun, faithful sunscreen use will help.

Hi Hainaut and welcome Smile

Instead of trying to bleach your skin (which is a pretty dodgy thing to do) I would suggest the following to help get your skin in optimal condition.
Drink plenty of water.
Exfoliate, This can be with microdermabrasion creams or glycolic/lactic acids. This will brighten the dull complexion by getting rid of dead cells.
Use a vitamin C serum as these can help even out skintone.
Keep your skin well moisturised where and when you need it. Emu oil is good for this, even if your skin can get a bit oily
ALWAYS WEAR SUNBLOCK!!!! That way you won't get the tanning that darkens your skin and you can avoid the potential drying and aging effects of the sun.

Whatever you do avoid hydroquinine, it is very dangerous stuff and also kojic acid as it hasn't been properly tested for safety.
If you keep your skin healthy and hydrated, it will be beautiful whatever the colour Smile

I totally agree with Casper's Mum. Your skin colour is who you are. Once upon a time when Farah Fawcett and Bo Derek were goddesses of the big screen, I tried to achieve their glowing golden tan, but within a week, I'd revert to my original paleness. So I don't think it's possible to lighten your skin unless you go through what Michael Jackson's beauty regime! Laughing

But what you can do is to use a skincare regime that makes your skin clearer and brighter. I'd recommend Kose's Seikkisei for that. I've been using it for a while now, and my skin is brighter and more radiant than ever.

hey i'm a woman of color. my skin tone is uneven. from my neck to my toes i'm a light/medium brown and from my neck up i'm a dark brown. i have a hormone imbalance which causes the discoloration which is very noticeable. i've tried all kinds of skin toners, skin whiteners but nothing works. i was thinking of tryin any cream or gel that contained hydroquinone but i've heard horror stories and succes stories. is there anything else that i can use to get and even skin tone that is permnate or something that i can use as a daily regiment or time consuming. soaps, lotions, creams, etc.

thanks Laughing Very Happy

Hi Vonnie and welcome
You are right to stay away from hydroquinine, it is very bad stuff!
Given that you are darker from the neck up, I would suggest using a sunscreen of SPF25+ as most people, including pasty faced people like me are darker on our faces due to uv exposure!
I would also recommend that you try a vitamin C serum as that can help even out skintone, though it won't lighten you overall. Also, make sure that you are exfoliating regularly, either with AHA/BHA washes or lotions, enzyme based masks (jasons do a yummy effective AND cheap pineapple and papaya one) or using manual exfoliants...many people have had godd effects with microdermabrasion creams like epidermx. Finally make sure that your skin is well moisturised, as dry patches can stick out like a sore thumb on many skintones! And don't forget the sunscreen! (I think I ought to marry Baz Luhrmann, the number of times I've said that Laughing )

Try that for 6 months and see if there is any improvement. If not, then check out the skinbiology site, as they have lots of info on getting rid of melanasma (sp Confused ) and scarring. They have some very impressive before and after photos of black skin
HTH

I wasn't aware of skinbio selling whitening soaps and lotions as such, but I would definately steer completely clear of any soaps and lotions because of the damage they could do. I should say that my opinion on this matter isn't very popular with some other members here, but I really think that serious messing with skin is well dodgy...most of the skin bleaching products available in asia and the staes are banned in europe and that is good enough for me Smile

do a search for epidermx, I'm sure ruth marion said that her black friend got rid of her melanasma by using it.
I still think exfoliation, C serum, moisturisation and sunblock are the way to go!
Liz

Hi All,

As a black woman I was really distressed by so many of the messages posted about lightning your natural skin colour. You can lighten pigmentation marks, but trying to bleach your skin colour is truly awful, I think once you discover your confidence and see the beauty of your skin colour you will stop wasting your money on products that damage your skin in the long run.
