Uh oh, confession time! Ladies, I plead guilty coz I have a thing for lipsticks. I see that I'm not walking this road alone (Hello Carekate, Winnie, Cheezwiz and Pudoodles ) and I'm glad to have company.
I don't fall for a particular brand and then proceed to buy all the available shades. I'm looking for one color family (Hello again Pudoodles) - the pink-browns - and buying as many brands as I can find. Previous to this I was fixated on reds then browns then red-browns. I'm in my 40's now and its tough to pull off dark shades hence the quest for a softer, more natural shade.
I get so excited when I discover a new lipstick that I dash home to put it on. Sadly, the lighting in most stores tends to distort colors and frequently my new lipstick is not the color I thought it was. (I've taken to bringing a mirror compact now and walking over to the store windows to check out shades.) This is when the tweaking madness begins. First I vary the amount I apply. If that doesn't get me closer to my HG shade then I try putting on different shades of lip pencil under the lipstick. If I'm still not satisfied (thats 95% of the time ) then I tweak further by applying lip glosses over the lipstick. If the pencils and glosses I already own do not do the job then I'm off to buy more pencils and glosses . You might say I'm a firm believer in giving a lipstick every fighting chance
Now using: Sue Devitt in Zimbabwe (pink, but more beigey than brown - great for summer)
Previously using: Laura Mercier in Bare Lips (subtle but with oomph factor)
Waiting for their day of glory: Laura Mercier in Pomegranate and Baby Lips, Vincent Longo, Fleur de Flirt and GI Venus, Nars in Pigalle, Fresh in Liberty Grace, Bare Escentuals in Fig, Cargo in Satori
Greatest hits: Sue Devitt in Cape Colony , Clinique in Pink Chocolate (the only lipstick I've repurchased) , Cargo in Vail
Exiled to a box on the closet floor: 50+ lipsticks
Just ordered: Garden Botanika samples (voted most moisturizing in "Real Simple" magazine
Now eyeing: Nars in Dolce Vita
When will this madness stop?!? Strangely enough, I'm not too big on eyeshadow (I have 2 in taupey shades) or blush (I only have Benefit's Dandelion).
Sorry for the long post, and thanks for reading this far. |

I know Mabsy, I know... Those lipsticks are waiting to be purged actually. I go through that process about 4x a year. Hopefully the accumulation will subside as I'm better about returning now. One can always hope |

*Gales of Laughter* What a great post, Crazyskin (you kindred spirit, you!). I loved the bit about using pencils and glosses to *save* your lipstick purchases!! I just bought the colour "Snob" from MAC.....sigh....I don't know what came over me - it's not even the right shade of pink...oh well, I guess I can use it underneath my Pink Vibrations for a bit of a softer look...(sigh again...)....What is it about lipstick?....I don't know...I even love putting it on!!!

Hi Pudoodles,
I knew you could relate Why lipstick? In my case I think my lips are my best facial asset. Okay, my ONLY facial asset So as the song goes I'm trying to accentuate the positive. Plus you can put just lipstick on a bare face and you're instantly good to go. Its magic! So you see, my comrade, its really a worthy cause we fight for |

Have y’all ever heard of MAC Lipmix? I’ve never tried them – hell, I’d never heard of them, until I was sniffing around MUA one day: http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemID=555/All_Lipmix_Products/MAC/Lips/ Apparently, they are pure pigments that you can use to mix with your fave lipstick/gloss/lip-whatever to customize or correct the color. I have to say that they intrigue me greatly, but I think you can only get them from MAC Studio stores and (fortunately), there isn’t one located near me.
But they sound like just the thing to rescue Pudoodles and Crazyskin’s pink and red-brown lipstick purchases if they don’t quite live up to the potential they had at the makeup counter! Anyway, if anyone has ever tried these, do give us poor lip addicts the lowdown....

Oh God, don’t even get me started on the sorry lighting that many of the beauty boutiques use to trick you into thinking the item you’re considering will be the perfect shade for you. I’ve also taken to using my own mirror and stepping up to the shop’s windows to check the item in natural lighting. This is also a good trick to use (check in natural lighting) when considering nail polishes. While Essie and OPI colors “only” cost $7.50USD each, the Lipmann Collection nail colors (supposedly Sarah Jessica Parker’s holy grail, although I can’t see what the fuss is about) cost $15USD per bottle so you damn well better know which shade you’re getting!! |

At least you have a pretty pucker! Mine is nothing to phone home about -- I even had restylane injections to plump me up a bit....now, on my lower lip I look like I was attacked by bees - I have little bumps that look like mosquito bites (or worse, cold sores!)....(sigh....but that's another post altogether)......I think I'm going to try the Carekate supplement route for plumping.....

Hiya Carekate,
I lovvvvve you for that post! Imagine the possibilities! Yes, this will be the answer to my dilemma. Just checked out the website, they don't mention Lipmix at all. But I'll take an MUAer's tip and find a MAC Studio store to see if they carry it. This will be so much fun! In fact, I might just quit my job so I can play with lipstick shades all day
Hey Pudoodles,
I'm in my late 40's so the the loss of plumpness you mentioned is something I know firsthand. I was born with full lips and when I was a teen full lips were not desirable, I took some ribbing for them. |

Thanks Carekate -sounds like a dream come true -- I took a look around the web too, crazyskin and couldn't locate MAC lipmix. I'm wondering if you would get the same effect using their pure pigment in the colour fuschia....does anyone out there know what the lipmix looks like?

I totally have a thing for eyeshadows and lipsticks. My eyelids are hooded AND oily, so I honestly don't know why I bother with the eyeshadow because it's either hidden or slides off or both! And as far as lipsticks...I LOVE deep dark shades...again...I don't know why I bother, because my lips are too full and I end up using the same pale shades every time in order to tone it down! |

Not that I want to facilitate your habit or anything, but you seriously need to try Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. It can’t help with your hooded eyelids, but it’ll take care of the oil! Before I tried it, I never used to bother with wearing eyeshadow because – as you said – it would slide right off within minutes of application, but now I can play with all the pretty eyeshadow shades and smoky-eye techniques to my greedy little heart’s content and my eyeshadow and/or liner stays right where I put it until I decide it’s time to remove it!! The stuff is totally brilliant, really: it’s like super-glue for eyeshadow! |
