Several things have made my skin "look" fairer, in that I had to go up to a lighter shade of foundation:

Chidoriya makes Nightingale Droppings Powder. www.chidoriya.com. This is what the geisha and kabuki apparently use in Japan.

Here is a link for those who do not speak/read Japanese:

And an interesting editorial on using the product:

I am Asian and have to agree that the 'whitening' products that are popular in E. Asian countries have more to do with achieving a bright and glowy complexion rather than trying to look like a kabuki mask!

With that said, I'll suggest a few things:

- Sunscreen: the highest PPD and SPF you can find. I like Sofina's UV Lucent. It's not the highest PPD, but I like the texture and wear the best. Covering up when outside or not going out when the sun is at its peak also helps.

- Retinol: the strongest you can handle.

- Alpha hydroxy acid: good to alternate with retinoids, but be careful unless you have tough skin.

- Azelaic acid: Some people on acne.org boards who were using Finacea reported that it also lightened their skin a bit.

- Vitamin C serum: good for giving skin a kind of radiance. Use cautiously since it can clog pores for some.

- Honey + lemon + yogurt mask: great for smoothing flaky skin and adding a glow. Plus, it feels really refreshing.

- Hydroquinone or kojic acid: I know lots of people on these boards are down on these ingredients, but I don't see what's the harm in trying them out. They have negative effects for a minority of people and zero for most. You can always test a product with either ingredient on an inconspicuous spot to make sure you don't have an adverse reaction.

As a few people mentioned already learn to love the skin color you were born with. It’s one thing to try to get rid of dark blotches, but to lighten your whole face is so extreme! I can’t imagine all those whitening products are good for your skin. I’m more concerned with having healthy young skin. Treat your face well and use sunscreen every day is the way to go.

Is it just me or does the beginning of this post seem like a ploy to sell whitening products?

You could use cold milk and mashed cucumber, as well as lemon juice and boiled parsley. Apply the milk and cucmber mixture on your face ( once every two weeks, add lemon juice to it ) and let sit on your face 15 mn, then rinse with the water you boiled the parsley in. You could also mix the parley and use it as mask, yoghourt and lemon juice work as well, but be careful not to use the lemon juice to often, it's a very strong acid it can strip your tissues. Also, cleansing your skin with baking soda whitens the skin big time, but it's very abrasive, so be careful not to use it more than once every two weeks as well ( you can also whiten your teeth several shades with baking soda ). Also, always wear sun block, no matter what the season is and what the weather is like, hope that helps !

If you want to lighten your skin tone now, but focus on evenness first, then re-evaluate. Jumping in to a harsh and potentially dangerous treatment as hydroquinone or monobenzone may cause irreversible damage. use only natural products for lighten your skin.
Good luck!
