So what about DMAE? Can it help, or is it just another rub-on facelift scam? The reality is somewhere in between. DMAE won't accomplish anything approaching a well-performed surgical face lift, but it is not useless either. In fact, it may be the fist agent proven in a study to have at least some positive effect on facial sag.
What is DMAE and what does it do anyway? DMAE is a short for dimethylaminoethanol, a naturally occurring substance that facilitates the synthesis of a neurotransmitter acetylcholine. DMAE also may stimulate the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an important component of cell membranes. Interestingly, DMAE is far better known and researched as a "smart drug" than a skin firming agent. In a number of studies, DMAE has been shown to reduce age-related decline in cognitive ability and memory. It was also found to modestly increase life span of laboratory animals. An intriguing finding in some DMAE studies was that it reduced the accumulation of lipofuscin deposits inside cells. Lipofuscin is a cellular pigment consisting of aggregated chunks of molecular waste. It tends to occur in the cells of older people. It is likely that lipofuscin is not simply a byproduct of aging but also contributes to the aging process. Neurons, heart and skin of older people usually contain particularly large amounts of lipofiscin.
The DMAE-skin connection is less researched. It has been demonstrated that DMAE causes some degree of skin tightening. However, despite speculation it remains unclear how DMAE firms the skin -- whether by stabilizing the membranes, boosting acetylcholine, reducing lipofuscin deposits or none of the above. Whatever the mechanism, the effect of DMAE is often noticeable although seldom dramatic. Besides, even though DMAE can't fully reverse the existing facial sag, it may reduce its further progression. Some people report a cumulative effect with continued use of DMAE.

Intestive Nutrition Brand Vs. Skin Actives:
The skin actives form is from the salt and they suggest about 3% minimum in a cream or serum. The IN is para-aminobenzoic acid form which is the purest form that has been diluted as it is highly alkaline and could burn the skin in its pure form. This form also has a smell to it unlike the salt form which has no smell. You can get the same concentration as the IN in the salt form. Skin actives does not give their percentages of concentration so noone has any idea of what concentration would end up in a cream or serum. DMAE can be an irritant in higher concentrations so they suggest adding a little at a time and testing on the skin and increase the amount added to your product and see how your skin tolerates it. I am not a chemist so I am not very good at calculating how much should go into the product but I have done a little experimentation on my own with the IN and TwinLabs DMAE H3 that I have read about on a couple of different forums including this one. The IN one is stronger than 3% I think, if my memory serves me right, but I could possibly be wrong, I remember finding out that it is 10% per dose. The TwinLabs is 5% for 2 drops. You should not use this by itself as it is very strong and will irritate your skin. I learned on another message board to add 2 drops to your moisturizer and mix it in right before putting it on your face. This is the most inexpensive way of all at around $8.00 a bottle. It stays self preserved for a long time if it is not mixed. |

I guess I forgot to add that I have been using the DMAE (Intensive Nutrition, Pure STrength Facial Treatment) for about a month. I HAVE seen good results from it. My n/f are nearly gone on one side and gone on the other. They are caused by "sagging" If you do a test and with your fingers gently lift the area above that, you can see that you can make them disappear. So you KNOW it does tighten a bit. I love it. I'm looking for a way to get more strength from the DMAE and have it cheaper. One woman on another board said she went to a "compound Pharmacy" and had them take their own "pure" DMAE and mix it with a substance to serve as a vehicle to help penetrate the skin and it only cost her $3!!!!
when my bottle is finished, I'm going that route. I will never do w/o this stuff again.
I also put it on my lips and then the Lipfusion. Just the reg LF not XL. I haven't used the new one but Ic an't imagine it being much better than the original, just added "XL" to the name.
It can be drying so on the bottle it even says apply DMAE, wait 10 min to dry and then "apply your preferred moisturizer" Everyone has there own moisturizer that works best for them so that is a good idea to have that separate.
I think this is a little known secret that will probably be big in the future. they will probably be adding it to commercial products (maybe not in strong forms) because women will hearing that it works so well.
Anyway, I can't believe that I left that out. |

Hi Wendy and all,
Did you say you could make an effective DMAE with DMAEH3,or by adding the H3 to the DMAE bitartarate?
I have seen from other boards that Kripps Pharmacy has a several varieties of DMAE.
I have used the Intensive brand,and I found it did have skin tightening ablilities.I would love to make it at home.

I think that Roc protient lift has dmae in it actually and for a drugstore brand, it's not bad. I'm using the Kripps dmae silk at the moment and really liking it, but due to the high pH, I have to wait a while before putting it over my copper peps and vitamin c. I have some aha on order, so I'm going to spike it to lower the pH. I spend far too long waiting to layer my actives as it is
