Hi everyone, I am new here and I am so lucky to have found these forums. I am hoping that someone here can help me out. I'm 24 years old and although I have had my share of breakouts, my skin was immaculate in the sense that I had no signs of aging. The women in my family all aged well and although I spent a lot of time in the sun as a child, ever since high school I have been using sunscreen. I'm not a sun worshipper by any means, and I try to stay out of the sun whenever possible. So, about a month ago, my skin started to enter a bit of a transition. It used to be quite oily, but it was starting to turn a little drier. I know this is normal, so I started moisturizing. Well, a week later, I wake up and I look like I aged 10 years! I'm not kidding. It was overnight. Now I have these fine lines under my eyes and the new moisturizers I bought aren't doing a thing! I don't have a lot of money, but I bought the best I could find. For weeks now I have been using Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-wrinkle Day Cream SPF 15 in the morning with Neutrogena Anti-wrinkle Undereye Cream under it, and also with it under my new night moisturizer which is Nivea Visage Anti-wrinkle Night Cream with Q10. Are these fine lines just dry skin? What can I do? Thanks for reading. I'm sorry it turned out so long. |

Welcome to the forum
Have you changed anything in terms of diet, working/living enviroment, etc? I'm wondering if perhaps you haven't been drinking as much water for example? That is something that affects my skin quite visibly and I can get small dehydration lines that go away when I actually drink enough water.
I'm also thinking that "a month ago" might have actually coincided with some temperature changes maybe? Is it really cold where you are right now? That can also require a step-up in terms of what moisturiser you use. I always need to use something more substantial in winter than what I use in summer. |

Hi. I agree that it could be related to temperature, lack of water, or diet changes. It could also be attributed to a health problem. Celiac disease (intolerance to wheat/gluton), for example, can result in malnourishment because of the body's inability to absorb nutrients (with Celiac, the celia in the tummy stop working when exposed to gluton much like the celia in the lungs of smokers, and since working tummy celia push nutrients where they need to go to feed the body, the body becomes malnourished when celia don't work properly). Chronic minor malnourishment results in symptoms of aging. If it were Celiac, other symptoms of malnourishment would probably be present (e.g., fatigue, unhealthy hair, nail fungus, rashes, etc.). This is just one example of one remote possibility. It might even be that your skin is reacting negatively to the anti-aging products you're using (my skin doesn't do well with Neutrogena, but it does awesome with Almay and Aveeno products). My point in this long rambling reply (sorry!) is that you might want to look at changes in yourself and your environment holistically. |

your 24 years old.. it isnt uncommon for someone your age to have lines under your eyes.. even smiling too much can contribute to lines under your eyes. |

Well I do smile a lot, so I always expected to get lines, but these extend to my upper cheekbones, which I thought was odd. It is cold where I am right now. We're in winter and it's about 30-40 degrees an average. My diet has changed quite a bit, but only because I have been on a diet and I have been eating BETTER with MORE water, which makes this more perplexing. Another thing I should ask and hope someone could answer is... does stress contribute to wrinkles? I'm a very stressed out person and I have been trying to relax more. If I can relax more, do you think my wrinkles will fade too? |

I had several thoughts when I read your post. First of all, I wondered whether you were exfoliating your skin enough. Skin that needs to be exfoliated sometimes mimics dry skin but really isn't true dry skin. Second, I wondered if you were getting enough fat in your diet. If you have cut calories, make sure you are still eating lots of healthy fats like avocados, flax oil, olive oil, nuts etc. Lastly, if you've lost weight it is going to show up in your face first. Lines and wrinkles will be more prominent on a thin face than a fat face. Unless you've got very thick and elastic skin, your lines are probably the result of weight loss. But give it some time. For example, Al Roker's face was very sunken and loose for a while after he lost weight, but it has tightened up some as his skin has adjusted to his new size. HTH |

I have to second Jeannie (about your skin not reacting well to Neutrogena)....I started using Neutrogena in my early twenties and my skin did not like it at all. Not sure why but Neutrogena clogged my pores and did not help with dry skin. That could just be me....looks like a lot of factors can contribute to the problems you (and me!) are facing!
I found jojoba oil to be wonderful on my dry skin! plus exfoliating twice a week. |
