Hi!
In my quest to use as many natural/organic skincare products as possible I was intrigued with the following product:
Avalon organics Vitality Vit C Serum
Ingredients
Organic lavandula angustifolia (lavender)(1), chamomilla recutita (chamomile)(1), camellia sinensis (white tea)(2) and organic arnica montana(3) extracts (aqueous), organic aloe barbadensis(2), emulsifying wax, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C), vegetable glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol (pro-vitamin B5), olive squalane, organic helianthus annuus (sunflower) oil(2), tocopherol and tocopherol acetate (vitamin E), glyceryl laurate, lemon bioflavonoids, melatonin, organic borago officinalis (borage) and linum usitatissimum (flax seed) oils(2), rosa canina (rose hip) oil, soy lecithin, theobroma cacao (cocoa butter), laminaria digitata (kelp) extract, allantoin, organic calendula officinalis extract(2), cetyl alcohol, steareth-20, glyceryl stearate, amodimethicone, xanthane gum, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, benzyl alcohol, organic citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) oil(2) and other essential oils.
I always use a C serum so was interested to know if anyone could tell me how stable/effective this might be in comparison to some of the more 'mainstream' C serums (eg Vivier, PSF etc). I read on the Skinceuticals website that Magnesium Ascorbal Phosphate isn't recognised by the skin?
Thanks! |

Hi Lucia,
Now, I'm not a chemist ... nor am I any sort of expert at all. I just want you to realize at the outset!
Now, from the research I have done, the only type of Vitamin C that the skin can use is l-ascorbic acid. It's my understanding that other forms of vitamin C have to be converted by the body before they can be used.
Also ... Vitamin C is, by its nature, a chemical. It's found in "organic" substances ... but it's a chemical of organic origin, and it's very unstable in its natural state.
The ingredients you listed are no more "organic" than any other ... and frankly I find it a little misleading that the word "organic" is part of the brand name. It suggests something that isn't there.
Just my two cents.

OK, my rec is to not bother with it.. Why?? Because I've been using it for probably longer than I should.. I figured it was better than nothing and I'm not paying 100.00 for a little jar... True, it isn't the right Vic C, and it left my skin very dry and uncomfortably tight feeling after I applied it, and I have oily skin...
After I found this forum almost 2 whole weeks ago, I went and bought the ingredients for the homemade version and I really like it alot!!!!
If you have your heart set on it tho, I have 2 new jars of it that will sit in the drawer now...LOL |

Thanks folks - that was my feeling! Think I will stick to my PSF Vit C! (am on a tight budget at mo' so I think it was just the price of the Avalon that tempted me! ) |

I heard many at MakeUpAlley used to like the Avalon but I think it had to do with the fragrance and the feel. They all pretty much acknowledge that the pH and the type of C used in it render the C claims fairly bogus. The popular C's here are Vivier, Skinceuticals, JB, Cellularskinrx, and PSF....all good though the last two are certainly more affordable than the first three. |
