Hey everyone...
well im a 19 year old male and i have reallllllly bad dry, tight , painful skin all over my face... im pretty sure this is from a badd mistake i made when i was like 13-14 i started to get acne and i would wash my face a million times a day with i think nutregena (spelling) salycic acid face wash... I really didnt know any better no one told me anything about skin care... I can remmeber getting reallly dry and flaky when i was like 14 and my skin was a little tight... well now its been about 5 years and i think i might have destroyed my skin... I've gone to 2 dermatoligists and since they cant see anything they just brush it off like nothings there.... I decided to go without lotion for a while and see if it could heal itself and ouch.... i made it like 3-4 days before the skin around my nose and under my eyes got SO tight and burned to so much i had to put on lotion again... Also using the lotion has given me acne still... The only reason i get acne is because i have to put the lotion on without the lotion it peels away..... ugg im really worried my skin has gotten worse and worse i used to be really outgoing and now all i can think about is my skin.... does anyone know if you can reverse damage??? thanks for anyhelp if you need any more info ill give you it |

1st of all Welcome Kevinn - I'm pretty new here too but can tell you these (mostly) ladies really know their stuff. I'm sure you will soon be overwhelmed with responses/suggestions on how to repair your skin.
I am not going to be alot of help here b/c I'm just beginning to learn about this stuff. But - can tell you start searching the threads here. They are a wealth of knowledge and information. I know the OCM and asprin masks have worked minor miracles for myself and my hubby. I'm thinking the purer the better for your skin at this point. Here is the link to the DIY Thread...TONS of great info. Good luck and happy surfing!

Really think the OCM is something you need to consider. |

Hi Kevin,
I am still relatively new to all of this but I think I have some suggestions that will help and then hopefully you can get Masby/CareKate and some of the other experts to give you additional advice.
I would look into a gentle cream based cleanser or the OCM (oil cleansing method) that Candy mentioned (I have not personally tired it but others love it). Here are some links:
http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=9717&highlight=ocm
http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=8539&highlight=ocm

I would also run to a Whole Foods or other health store near you and purchase either jojoba oil or grape seed oil, or both. After washing your face in the am and pm you can warm a few drops of oil in your hand and then gently apply to your face. It is a wonderful moisturizer that will not clog your pores. Plus, it is gentle.
Sounds like you are not ready to do an aspirin mask…..that will just make your skin tighter and dryer.
For now, proceed slowly and gently. And like Candy said, do a lot of research on this forum, these chicas (and some chicos) know their stuff and will be able to point you in the right direction.
Good luck!! |

I don't think the damage can be permanent in that your body will always create new and slough off the old. I think if you change how you've been doing things to your skin with the right products I think you can reverse or at least improve it's current state.
Personally - since finding this forum I can honestly say my skin has improved 110%. My divots (they were beyond wrinkles) have lessened tremendously. I look 5 years younger. No lie - my skin glows. Even the lunk heads I work with have even commented on it. Which shocked me that they even noticed but then said something too! If that's not a great endorsement for the ladies (and gents) here I don't know what is.
O/T - where abouts in Chicago? |

Hey Kevin,
No, using jojoba oil or doing the OCM will not dry your skin. And if you buy a gentle cream cleanser to wash with and then moisturize after washing, it should not dry your skin.
I have extremely dry skin (even though the humidity is 100% in Houston.....what is it in Chi-town?) and I like to use B. Kamins cleanser....but not sure where you would find that in your town plus it might be a big investment if you are not sure how your skin would react.
Honestly, I think you should go get some jojoba (pronounced Hohoba) and grape seed oil and put a little on your face. Your skin will thank you.
Candy - do you use jojoba? do you know where Kevin can get some?
No one is going to tell you to put things on your face that will dry your skin...you post is pretty clear about your dry skin.

Hi and welcome. I don't any pearls of wisdom regarding acne as I never really dealt with it. But I do think that with the proper care your skin will "repair"itself, so to speak. You are only 19, very young. It may take some trial and error but you have come to a good place for advice. |

Shelley - I pre-mix my OCM in a 6oz bottle, and the mix I made was b4 I had my Jojoba - but about to mix a new batch and will be cutting the % of EVOO and adding the Jojoba.
Humidity? In Chicago? In the winter? We have none, it's horrible. In the summer the DEhumidifer is always runnin full tilt and in the winter the humidifer on the furnace has to keep getting upped and I keep a monster humidifier in my room.
Aurora - I know exactly where that is. My Dad is your neighbor in Batavia. Kev - find a local health food store, I know they have em there. Pick up cold pressed EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, CASTOR OIL, JOJOBA OIL. Limited funds bite - but this will be under 25.00 bucks for you and I'm pretty confidant will help your complexion.
And once the weekend is over and the real gurus of skin come back I'm sure they will be giving you plenty of assistance. |

Since you asked for Chicago health food stores, I simply did a search on the net - below find the link. Sure you could do the same for Aurora/Batavia/Naperville etc.
The OCM will gently cleanse and moisturize. After cleansing just take a drop or two of the oil rub it in your hands then apply to your face. Feels great. Hubby is a huge fan of the OCM and even does it on his own now!! Huge feat!
Good luck. Feel free if you have any more questions.
