| Does jojoba oil have a specific odor if it is becoming rancid? I have only had mine for about 8 months but it seems as though the smell has changed. I thought it was completely odorless when I first got it and it seems to have kind of a nutty smell to it now. Perhaps I am dreaming. The last thing I want to do is use it and cause a break out. Doesn't jojoba oil have a shelf life of a year? Or is it longer or less than this? |

| Jojoba oil has a very long shelf life - I believe it can last for years, so I wouldn't worry too much about a nutty smell. |

Here I am, self-proclaimed Queen of the DIyers, and it never even occured to me that the "carrier" oils like jojoba, grape seed, avocado, etc., even COULD go bad!!
Do they really? I thought they were "inert" with nothing in them that could make them get spoiled...?

I've read somewhere (really can't remember the source, but thought of it because of the ylang ylang decleor recipe) that Kukui nut oil is supposed to have a short shelf life... I'll have to go internet searching to find out...

The website says that jojoba has a shelf life of 2-3 years. Cleared that up! Well, actually, not really... does that mean the 2-3 yr shelf life is after it has been opened?  |

I just bought a small jar of jojoba today and there is an expiration date of 06/08, but to me it does smell rancid...kinda a nutty smell but different. Crap I don't know what to do with it. I know that oils in general can go bad early if kept in extreme conditions. I bought it from a reputable store so who the heck knows.  Maybe I'll take it back and ask the clerk if I can smell the "other" brand to compare...sheesh, I'm pathetic   |

Yeah, that smell! so you know what I am talking about. Let me know what you find out when you take it back (and hey, you're not pathetic- I would do the same thing and take it back). This is my first bottle of jojoba oil so I don't really have a reference point. Have you bought jojoba oil before? |

Yes I have bought jojoba oil before, can't remember the brand name though. I do recall not liking it (this was during the summer), although I can't remember WHY I didn't like it. This time around I thought what the heck I'll give it another whirl. I'm going back to the store today, so I'll update later. |

Ok so I went and returned the jojoba..yeah call me paranoid  I spoke with the manager and he really didn't know how the oil was "supposed" to smell. What he summized is that the Jason 100% organic jojoba oil had a smell due to the fact that it is organic vs the jojoba by Desert Essense is 100% natural jojoba oil. Am I making any sense, I'm darn tired right now. Apparently it all boils down to how the oil is filtered/processed. I'm not willing to chance it, the oil smelled rancid. I have other organic oils and they don't have the same odor. HTH  |

| Isn't jojoba oil really a wax??? I left some in a car overnight, and when I got to it, it had solidified. |

FYI - here's what TPF has to say about Jojoba oil:
Description: Jojoba OilINCI: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil -- It is a pure natural oil derived from the seeds of a plant (simmondsia chinensis). Jojoba oil is a clear oily tan liquid, no or faint odor.
This oil is an excellent moisturizer & emollient (prevents transdermal water loss), anti-wrinkle agent (provides smoothness & softness), good lubricant (without oil film, penetrates the skin), protects partly from UV radiation (SPF about 4). It penetrates skin rapidly and nourishes, softens and moisturizes.
