Hi,
basically i'm an adolescent who needs some help with skin care. I currently use "St.Ives exfoliating apricot scrub" and "Clearcil biactol" and a cheap boots own oil free moisturiser, which seems to keep spots at bay within reason.

However my problem is that i still suffer badly from blackheads,my skin sometimes looks kind of scarred where old spots are healing(unfortunately i only recently learn NOT to squeeze them), and also kind of dry (i think i need a better moisturiser, could someone recommend one to me,baring in mind that an oil based one will give me spots).

I am aware that skin at my age is prone to blemishes, but it would be nice to gain some extra knowledge on the subject, especially as i have very white skin, which i would be quite happy to have, if i could get it blemish free and looking healthy. Also, because my skin is quite white i also suffer badly from a couple of thread vains or burst capillaries, (i'm not sure exactly what they are, how'd you get rid of them?),also rings under eyes, which sometimes makes me look positivly ill.

So if you've got any tips for any of my problems, any advice welcome Very Happy

I would try the acne.org board. It has a good regime that helped my daughter (and me) achieve very clear skin. Also, don't forget to wear a good sunblock. HTH

First, I would suggest that you switch to another scrub. I haven't used the St Ives for a while but, unless they have changed their formulation, the scrub is too rough for facial skin IMO.

I was going to suggest a good basic moisturiser by Dermalogica - Oil Control Lotion. This has salicylic acid in it which should help prevent acne. I am not sure what your skin is usually like though - would you say it's pretty dry all over? If so then this would not be the best choice. Still, I would sugget something that has salicylic acid but is more moisturising perhaps. What brands do you have access to or which brands would you prefer?

Make sure you are drinking enough water.
I would also suggest the do it yourself OCM and ACV toner (you may already have some of the ingredients at home). The OCM will help get rid of those blackheads and the ACV toner will help those healing areas. You could also use aspirin and witch hazel as a spot treatment.

A good basic line to start is Paula's Choice. You can only get this online atwww.cosmeticcop.com

Her website gives a good overview on skintypes and possible solutions. You can also call and request samples. Her products are inexpensive, IMHO, and you can get a good basic regimen. Hope you find something that works.

Also a few scrubs that are gentle are ones by Aveeno and Boscia (www.boscia.com)and Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Buffing Beads and Clinique 7day scrub.

I TOTALLY agree with Mabsy about the St. Ives Apricot scrub - stop using it immediately! Your skin might look okay now but you will be doing some damage by all the harsh and manual scrubbing from the apricot bits. This may also be contributing to your burst capillaries.

Do you have any feeling about whether you'd like to use natural products or make them yourself? You also haven't said if your skin is ultra oily or dry, what are your concerns other than the blackheads?

I had quite good success with Dermalogica's range of products over my early to mid 20s. There are a lot of different things you can mix and match in terms of different cleansers and moisturisers depending on your particular concerns. In fact, I still have some hang over Dermalogica products that I still use, particularly the Daily Microfoliant.

I use the Dr. Hauschka products now because for me using natural products is important, but that'll be something you'll need to think about for yourself, we each have different concerns.

Anyway, enough rabbling - sorry! - let us know your other conerns so we can give you some more pointers.

Kiwigirl.

Amen and hallelujah!!! St. Ives Apricot Scrub is absolutely evil because the jagged chunks of apricot shell causes microscopic tears in the skin, leaving you with irreversible damage. How do I know? Because I feel for their clever marketing ploy way back in 1980-something and used it to exfoliate my face. I think that everyone who ever used it ought to unite and file a class-action lawsuit against St. Ives for damages!!! Mad

Seriously, I don't think I'd even be willing to use any type of apricot scrub to exfoliate my body, much less my precious face!

Totally agree. This is why I can speak with so much authority on it. I used it (back when I was young and fell prey to the marketing) and now have some broken capillaries on my cheeks as a result... Damn those pictures of beautiful smooth-faced women (who probably never used St. Ives anyway...)

STOP using st ilves apricot scrub. I am very white myself and used this product around the age of 15...and voila..broken capillaries. The only way to remove is through intense pulse light..which can cost a lot of money.

I agree with the fact that the St. Ives scrub is quite rough and damaging to the face. However, using it once every 3 weeks or so can help with refreshing your skin. Atleast that's what works for me.

Now, for the acne/ moisturizer products. This is what I used:

-Rite Aid Brand cleansing pads (Clearasil/ oxy/ neutrogena/ etc. made me break out).

-Clean & Clear Morning Glow moisturizer (has an SPF15 for your fair skin/ will not make your skin oily. Not the best smelling, but not obnoxious either)

Every morning and night I would wipe my face with a cleansing pad which I then followed up with one pump of the Clean & Clear moisturizer. This helped get rid of my acne and prevented reacurences. I guess my way was to just keep it simple and easy.

Well, hope this helps in some way or another. Very Happy

boo! I as well used to exfoliate my face and now my broken capillaries can thank me for it. Crying or Very sad I strongly discourage it, even if only every 3 weeks. I would however, recommend Zia's Papaya Enzyme Peel; which is not an actual "peel" but more of a mask that naturally removes the top layer of dead skin cells and leaves your face with the same smooth, fresh cleanliness (but none of the damage!!).

Hmmm, that sounds much more healthyer for the face anyways!!! Very Happy However, it's probably just me, but I don't enjoy the 'peeling masks' so much. Sad I guess its a personal preference. I think I may still try it out though. May be worth it Smile .

I can't recomend the recipes thread enough:

http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=5981&start=0

The homemade Dr Hauschka Cleansing Cream followed by any toner (Witch Hazel is good for problem skin) and Jojoba Oil as a moisturiser.

FYI - if any of your broken caps happen to be around your nostrils, as mine are, you wanna know what caused them? Blowing your snoot too hard when you have a cold or allergies.... Considering that Austin, TX is the Allergy Capital of the World, it's a wonder my nose doesn't look like a tomato by now!! Embarassed

are you using any type of clay or mud mask? this will help remove any excess oil trapped in the pores so there is less oil for bacteria to feed off, hence, less break out

Have you tried to go to a dermatologist? A doctor can prescribe you an acne cream for your face. One that really worked for me is called clynoxil gel. With the acne marks, time can only heal them.. just avoid going in the sun because sun makes the acne scars worse. Exfoiliate with a gentle scrub, i would reccomend Dermalogica Microfiliant and cleanse with something more gentle perhaps spectrogel if you want to avoid spending lots of money. Smile Good luck

IMO, exfoliation will never be a good idea for sensitive skin. It causes irritation and slower the healing process.

well im just suggesting a very gentle exfoiliator. You need something to take off dead skin on the surface of your face. Dead skin can clog pores and therefore produce acne

Take your St.Ives and BURN IT.
Or throw it out.
Or give it to someone you really really don't like.

Evil creation.

I also think you should make sure you're getting plenty of water into your system, it works wonders on clearing the skin (to a point) Smile. Also, stressing out about your skin can make it worse! Have a big ole glass of water and relax. Very Happy

You mentioned that your skin is dry, but I'm wondering if it's not just reacting to the treatments you're already putting on it. Many acne medications can over-dry the skin, thus making it even more irritated. I advise switching to something a little gentler than a scrub, which can be harsh on already irritated skin. A good drugstore grab is Cetaphil Gentle Clenser (with the blue writing, that green "facial" one has oil in it which might not go over well), or you can grab the Walmart brand one for around $3. Washing your skin twice a day (no more) should do you well.

You can go ahead and keep the Clearasil pads but they never worked well for me. Something about salicylic acid just irritates the heck out of my skin with little to no acne results.

If you can get ahold of it splurg on a bottle of Eucerine Skin Renewal moisturizer... it's the one with the green on it. Most stores don't carry this anymore so I'm not sure if you can find it, but instead of salicylic acid it uses lactic acid to gently exfoliate. It's oil free and has an SPF 15 in it.

I also don't suggest slathering makeup all over your face if you can avoid it, though I know some days there's no other way! Instead, invest in Neutrogena Healthy Skin stick concealer (because it'll last you forever and has vitamin E which'll help heal) or another like product that you can just dab on your finger and then lightly pat the area(s) that you need to hide. Whatever one you pick get one as close to your skin tone as possible and you won't have to cover that up with foundation. Let your skin breathe!

And the honest truth is that blackheads are the devil. If you find some way to get rid of them please let me know. I'm on a constant quest! All those "blackhead eliminating" products that they have out now are total junk, and trying them has given me more than what I started with!

I agree with the others- NO APRICOT SCRUB!

I would also like to offer you advice that I wish I would have known back then. I also have very light/pale skin and have really dark under eye circles. I didn't start using concealer until late senior year in highschool and even then I used the way wrong color (it was too light and pastey and didn't really cover my darkness well and in my pictures it looked so weird) and I only put it under my eyes. If your darkness is like mine, it extends up into the corners of the eyes. I basically look like I have two black eyes. In summary for concealing:

-Use a peach toned concealer (peach helps cancel out the blue)
-Use not only under your eyes, but in the corners. This helps bring out your eyes.

It's good that you are learning earlier on than I did NOT TO PICK! In general, the more I have learned about skin and what happens when you mess with it, the more I have left it alone. A good book that I recommend for you is Breaking Out by Lydia Preston. I wish I would have read this when my face started giving me trouble at age 13/14.

You should try using the aspirin mask. This has totally helped with those pesky blackheads of mine. Here's my variation:

1.crush about 10-12 asprin pills (I use a mortar and pestle to make it into a finer powder)
2.in a small bowl, add a few drops of water. Then mix, keep adding drops until you have a paste. It doesn't take much water so add slowly!
3.add about a tsp. of honey and mix
4.apply to face and let sit for 15-20 minutes.
5.rinse off with luke warm water, and gently rub (NOT scrub!) your hands over your face to exfoliate- not too much though b/c the apsirin is very grainy and you don't want to rub your face raw!

HTH. Smile

i'm wondering 2 things from reading these replies...what is it about aspirin that makes it good for skin? i've seen recipes that include it--also, do you guys think that all exfoliants are a bad idea or just st I's abomination? what about a sugar or oat scrub? i've seen that a lot too in diy recipes for sensitive skin. i think the sugar is a source of glycolic acid?

Aspirin is made from salicylic acid.

All exfoliants aren't bad- it's the shape of the exfoliant material. I am sure oat scrub is fine but not sure for sugar as a scrub (wound't the corners scratch the skin?... have always wondered this). And yes, sugar is a source of glycolic acid.
