I wandered across this web site while searching for DIY recipes. Thought it was a hoot!!
19th Century Cosmetic Recipes
Creme de l’Enclos [for whitening the skin]
½ pint new milk
¼ oz. lemon juice
½ oz. white brandy
Boil the whole, and skim it clear from all scum. Use it night and morning.
For cheeks:
2 pints vinegar
3 ounces Isinglass
2 ounces Nutmeg
6 ounces Honey
Add a pinch of red sandalwood
Place it over a slow fire for a half-hour, don't boil, but thoroughly heat it. Strain and let cool. Before using it remove all dust and grease from the face by washing.
To remove pimples
1 oz. sulphur water
¼ oz acetated liquor of ammonia
1 gr. Liquor of potassa
2 oz. white wine vinegar
2 oz. distilled water
[Apply] the following twice a day.
To remove superfluous hair:
Spread on a piece of leather equal parts of galbanum and pitch plaster, and lay it on the culprit hairs as smoothly as possible, and then, after letting it remain about three minutes, pull it off suddenly, and it will be quite sure to bring out the hairs by the roots, and they will not grow again.
To prevent the hair from greying:
4 drs. Oxide of bismuth
4 drs. Spermaceti
4 oz. pure hog’s lard (*posters note - eeewww gross!)
The lard and spermaceti should be melted together, and when they begin to cool stir in the bismuth. It may be perfumed to your liking.

Yikes!!! Hog's lard? It appears that they certainly had the right idea even though some of the ingredients are a bit scary. "Pitch Plaster" for hair removal? I don't know what pitch is, but I would want to put anything against my skin that has the word 'plaster' in it! But it looks like honey and milk have stood the test of time.
Fun info, Candy. |

I believe pitch plaster is a treatment made from pine tree resin. I've read about it being used to treat sore muscles. |
