I've been to a few different estheticians who have kind of rolled their eyes when I mentioned I used Retin A, and have tried to discourage me from using it.
Why would skincare professionals not want people to use Retin A?
One of them mentioned the risk of broken capillaries and warned that my face could look like Teddy Kennedy's when I'm older!
I think the other two said they thought it would just be too drying.
But all three of them definitely did not recommend it.
Have you found this to be the case as well, and should we be paying attention? |

Would have to put their response down to ignorance. Check on PubMed for Retin-A or tretinoin and you will find 30 plus years of clinical reports establishing Retin-A as the best, most effective topical for repairing sun damage and preventing/removing fine wrinkling. It's true that some people get broken caps from using it but not all. I have been using it for about 10 years? and no broken caps. But it sure has saved my face from all the sunning I did as a young swimmer athlete.
Not saying it's the only thing you can use to improve your skin but it's certainly something that if it can be incorporated into your routine, should be done so.
My other two "requireds" are C+ Firming serum and LRP Dermo-Peds spray sunscreen. |

I would go farther than Betterat 40 and say that they don't like it ... because they don't and can't sell it.
Really ... if every product was as wonderful as an esthetician claimed it was ... then all one would have to do is use some of those overpriced salon products. That's simply not the case.
Estheticians aren't doctors ... and their training is only as good as the school they went to. Even then, there are good estheticians ... and ones that really aren't good.
If you look at a few of the scientific abstracts regarding the use of Retin-A, you'll see that there are a number of benefits to its use ... and despite using the alcohol based retinoid product, I don't find that it dries my skin.
If you were to just use Retin-A and didn't use a good sunscreen the next day, then you would be subjecting your skin to being ultimately harmed.
However, if you use Retin-A as directed, use a good moisturizer [based upon your skin type] and a good sunscreen [which may or may not be your moisturizer], everything I've read suggests that not only will you avoid photodamage ... but you will be stimuating your own body's production of collagen as well as encouraging a healthy cell turnover rate. All these things should result in the exact opposite of the predictions of those estheticians.
Never underestimate that power of money. Those estheticians have products that they like to push ... it's one of the ways they make money. So ... if they don't sell it ... they probably don't want their clients using it.

Totally agree with the other two posters.
I've been using Retin-A about 6mos and my skin has never been better. |

I can buy renova for $30. cdn. I can also buy a retinol product from an aesthetician for over $100. Go figure..  |

I bet if they could sell it and make some $$$ from it, they would love Retin-A. I wonder how many estheticians have this in their own medicine chest and just don't tell anyone  ?? |

| I have been using Tazorac (a Retin-A like drug) for over a year. It's been great cleared up adult acne and fine lines. I also use a moisturizer every day. I've read many MEDLINE articles on these compounds and it's all positive. There are overuse concerns but you'd know if you have a problem by extreme redness and peeling. I do not understand the comments you received. |
