I was on vacation in Mexico last week and did have a "Montezuma day" in the middle of the week (trying to be delicate... think intimate experiences with the ladies room....) but pink bismuth seemed to control it nicely.
Now I'm back almost a week and still have absolutely no appetite. When I try to force myself to eat, I take a few bites and feel full. Nothing appeals to me... even my beloved naughty treat - Taco Bell!
Otherwise, I feel fine.
I HATE going to the doctor, so I want to give myself a few more days to get my appetite back.
Any ideas? I'm hoping exercise will help. I ran this week and will be doing yoga at least twice before the work week starts again next week.
HELP! I miss food! |

I'd suggest going to the doctor monday if you're not feeling any better...or sooner if you have another 'date' with the toilet.
did you drink the water? ice cubes, even water from brushing your teeth, eat salad in a restaurant that may have been washed in tap water..
Have you had hepatitis shots?
Could be anything really... |

Food poisening will do that to you. Relax. You are probably fine.
I recently got food poisoning and even after it passed (literally) my appetite did not return for a long time. Food poisening likes to visit you from both ends, but no matter if it is from one end or both it is simply your bodies way to purging itself of something.
For me even when I was hungry I couldn't seem to find interest in eating - let alone at my favorite haunts. And when I tried to eat I would only eat maybe two-three bites and lose interest. I was worried too, but as long as you are hydrated your system can recover from a lot.
Also, your system could still be recovering internally. As long as you consume water and small amounts of food you should be fine. Mine was bananas and cereal (for a couple of weeks).
Even if you LOVE Taco Bell, if it at ALL reminds you of anything you ate in Mexico it could shut your hunger down. I think it is just your bodies defense mechanism protecting itself from a repeat of 'Montezuma'.
It has been 7 weeks since my fun ride on the porcelain highway and I still do not like the smell of movie theater popcorn (that is where I got mine from).
If you feel ok, then I think you'll be fine. That is my two cents for what it is worth. |

When we went to Cancun, the same thing happened to my husband. He was sick there and then recovered while we were still there. Shortly, after we returned home he got sick again. Didn't want to eat, then the bad cramps would come and go. Finally, the cramps didn't go! I took him to the emergency room and he was put into the hospital. They thought he may have picked up a parasite. It turned out just to be Montezuma's revenge. I do think I'd go to the doctor, in case.... |

Update.
It seems that small amounts of comfort foods are tolerable... a chocolate bar for lunch and mac and cheese for dinner. No upset stomach or Montezuma flashbacks so far....
Better than nothing, I guess.
If I graduate to adult food in the next few days, I think I should be fine. Otherwise, I guess a trip to the doctor () wouldn't be a bad idea.
I did get a bit careless with the water... we were told that the resort had a water purification system. Yeah.... right....
Thanks so much for all of your concern. I feel much more at ease. |

LandB,
I just get freaked out because right now we're getting bombarded with those ads for twinrix (hep a and B combined shots). |

I hear ya! We must have been posting at the same time. I'll definitely bite the doctor bullet if need be. |

LandB,
In all likely-hood, your hotel did have a purification system....but (unfortunatley) it doesn't remove natural bateria in the water system. The water most likely was/is perfectly safe to drink, but due to the fact you may not have been exposed to what is naturally in their water -- hence your body reacted by purging what it deemed a threat. And depending on how much of a threat can really tell on how bad your system reacted. It sucks and can be dangerous due to dehydration, but now that the intial danger has passed your system is probably just recooping. Depending on what your system was exposed to, it could take awhile.
My recent bout with food poisoning gave me a first hand experience with real 'Montezumas Revenge' and how tiring and embarrassing it is. Combine it with vomitting and I was reminded that I don't control my body, but it controls me.
Since every region has different bateria, germs, fungus etc that naturally gets in the water systems - it is common for travelers to hear the well-intended advice to steer clear of the local water and always try to drink bottled water. Just remember that isn't because the place you are visiting is 'dirty', but that many folks don't have the built in defenses for a foreign area.
If the water and food doesn't kill off locals, then I don't worry too much, but I do try to limit my wussy bodies defenses by only drinking bottled water from the U.S and eating in restuarants that cater to westerners (FYI: Places like McDonalds and other western owned fast food places will import a majority of food stuff from the U.S....same reason to keep to places that deal with westerners. You may lose out on enjoying local cuisine, but it limits your chances of spending your vacation enjoying the hotel restrooms).
Why chance ruining a perfectly good vaction when I could be ruining it myself by picking fights with my husband....who misses the hotel toilets too! |

I agree with deanne123...it does appear to take the body longer to recover from a foriegn water or from food poisening longer than a regular stomach flu-back that you would get at home. I had no appetite for several days after mine. It it strange because I didn't feel sick, yet food just didn't appeal to me.
Try taking a bite of something healthy here and there, and drink lots of fluids....maybe even Pedialyte or the frozen Pedialyte pops. |

I probably won't want much dinner, but boy did it feel good to eat real food! |

Wow! That's a really good sign.
So glad you're feeling better!
Montezuma's is no vacation. Been there, done that, not going back again. Don't get me started. Not just the bugs you catch but the acrobatic, white knuckle plane trip home.
Yow! Nightmare I prefer Hawaii. |

Hi, I'm glad you're feeling better and getting some real food into you. We lived in Mexico for 6 years before moving to Roatan so we're very familiar with this type of food poisoning. This is nasty but from what I've read most cases are a result of consuming fecal matter, human or animal. This shouldn't be a surprise since every time it rained in Cozumel the streets were flooded with sewer. We got sick a few times a year and we weren't alone. It is a myth that the locals don't get sick, everybody we knew down there gringo or not had episodes of it. Most of the locals take amoeba tablets 2x a year. We had giardia, a parasite you get from eating poop, Tim had typhoid/salmonella that is usually from bird droppings. A restaurant in Cozumel was shut down when we lived there because a lot of people were getting tomaine poisoning. It turned out they didn't have any hot water, they were dipping dishes in a 5 gallon bucket and then wiping them dry! So, it can be in the water, on the food, on dirty dishes. Even a waiter who hasn't washed up after using the toilet and has his thumb on your plate when he sets it in front of you can be the culprit. It doesn't take much. I spent one Christmas day in the hospital hooked up to IV fluids because I was so dehydrated from all the vomiting and diarrhea. One night in a really nice restaurant, Tim got up from the table, threw up in the mens room and sat back down and didn't say anything until that night when I started feeling rotten. His metabolism is very zippy. After a while we just stopped eating out. Even down here there are only a couple of restaurants we bother with. I haven't been poisoned down here yet but Tim has had diarrhea several times after eating out.
I don't know if this really helps or not but we were told to eat a lot of yogurt because having good bacteria in your system will help when bad is introduced. We also asked for extra limes to wipe our cutlery, the top of beer bottles and rims of glasses, and to squeeze all over the food in the hopes of killing bacteria. We had our hepatitis shots.

Freefall, thanks so much for taking the time to post this background information--- I feel much less responsible for my own demise. Sounds like the few times I sipped the water wasn't necessarily the cause.
Anyway... I was still somewhat shaky with food until today. Omellete for breakfast without any problems and a huge Italian dinner tonight ... so far so good.
I went shopping yesterday and fortunately had the discipline to stay away from all the skinny-people clothes that were fitting so well. Something told me my foray into size 2 wasn't permanent. |
