Hideehoo...I have been struggling, recently, to discover the perfect exfoliating product for my normal/combo skin. In general, my skin is somewhat dry but I have large pores on and around my nose and chin. I don't ever get pimples, though. I've always tried products that CLAIM to be "gentle" but lo and behold, when I start to rub on my face those "gentle beads" become angry sandpapery vipers!! I am at a loss, and hope that an exfoliation fairy godmother will fly onto this thread and tell me what to do! I want it to be effective, the type of thing I can use once or twice a week in between a milky cleanser. I've read some great reviews on Dermalogica micro exfoliant -- would this be appropriate for the above described skin type? Also, I recently heard that an alternative to sandpapery products is using an exfoliating mask once or twice a week. If anything, I feel like I should be using a hydrating mask! Oh me oh my. Thoughts?
ps: Am I asking a question that should be posted in the "product review" forum? I wasn't sure, since I wasn't reviewing a product here, yet it's a product related question. Set me straight once and for all! |

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Orlane's Oligo VIT-A-MIN Vitalizing Scrub! My skin is really sensitive to any kind of scrubbing or brushing, but for some reason, this product causes me no harm. It has tiny beads, and as long as I don't scrub too hard, it gives me smooth glowing skin with no sign of irritation.
The Dermalogica Microfoliant is my second choice. The beads are so small they're almost indiscernible. I think it relies more on an enzyme effect to exfoliate. Either way, it's fantastic too!

Hey Zazu,
Your post is in the right place! Well, I think so anyway
I also have normal/combo skin and I have three fave exfoliating products. The first is the Microfoliant, which, as Alohagirl said, relies on enzymes. Great product! Also, if you prefer a scrub then you really can't go past the Peter Thomas Roth Buffing Beads. They're effective but super gentle. Plus you get a really big bottle of them so it's pretty good price-wise. Last but not least, the Phytomer Purifying Gommage Exfoliant. It's one of those exfoliants that you apply to your skin and wait a while for it to dry up a bit. Then you start rolling it off with your fingers and the dead skin cells come with it. This particular porduct also has tiny little beads in it (unlike the other 'gommage' products I've tried), which enahnces the exfoliation effect (relative to other exfoliants that you 'roll off' your skin).

Hi Zazu,
I use the Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant and it's great if you just want a product you can pop on as a mask, relax and let the enzymatic action of papaya gently exfoliate. It's a product that doesn't need manual action like the Dermalogica Microfoliant or the Phytomer Purifying Gommage Exfoliant, so it's ideal for sensitive skins...you leave it on for 10 mins or so until dry and then rinse off with water. I love rubbing this product off with my finger, I can't help myself !:P After you rinse this off, your face looks really radiant and glowy. I found it great for my normal/Dry combo skin.
I have the Dermalogica Microfoliant as well and use it when my skin starts getting oilier telling me somethings due... it's a great product too which leaves a clean mattifying finish.
Exfoliating is great to minimising my pores and keeping skin super smooth. I would love to try the Phytomer Gommage product as I like the lifting off dead skin cells effect-- I remembered Shiseido's Pureness range had a sticky gel mask that you applied and when dried you literally peeled off the whole thing if you applied it quite thick.

Thank you all for the delightfully swift response! How very helpful....After reading these reviews, I think I'm leaning away from a scrub and toward the Phytomer Purifying Gommage Exfoliant or the Phytomer Vegetal Exfoliant. Anytime I have a facial, a product like the Gommage is applied, dries, and is sloughed off, and it never seems too harsh. I'm going to investigate each!! Thanks so much |
