I started on Skinceuticals Retinol .5 about 2 weeks ago using it every other night. I have just started noticing some flaking skin on my chin and between my eyebrows. No irritation, just flaking. So here's the question....
Should I continue using the retinol every other night, or should I take an extra night or two off?
Thanks,

If it's just mild flaking I'd stick with every second night. You should experience a bit of flaking because the retinol is supposed to take off the top layers of skin. If the flakes are bugging you try doing a mild scrub on a night where you aren't using the retinol. Do it at night in case you get some redness and keep it to a gentle scrub to avoid possible irritation |

Backing off will definitely get rid of your flaking but if you prefer to forge ahead, I would suggest using a Papapya/Pumpkin, etc. enzyme peel. The enzymes will dissolve the flakes without further irritating your skin. I like the Alba Botanicals brand myself. |

Would doing a moisturizing mask help as well?

Hi mom2tommax - I also use the SC .5% and have the same drying/flaking issue. I can barely use it every other night and in fact just started trying Avene Ystheal (retinaldehyde) which is much milder. I've only used it 2 nights and it also dries my skin a bit, but if it takes a lot longer to exfoliate, I may not like it. What's the point in using these types of products if the skin ends up looking dry and crepey anyway? The Avene may be good for in between times of stronger retinol use, though. I bought the Emulsion for face and the eye treatment. I really have trouble using the SC .5% around my eyes, so I'm liking this milder retinoid for that purpose. I still plan to use the SC Retinol, though less often (at least during the cold, dry weather), as it's just too drying. My skin gets oily in summer so I'm anxious to see if I can tolerate it more often then. I even bought a bottle of SC 1% Retinol at the same time but I don't know if I'll ever be able to tolerate it! I'm waiting until summer for that as well.
I agree with betterat40. I use PSF Pumpkin Enzyme Peel and this sloughs off dryness without rubbing or abrading already sensitive skin. It's not without irritation though (stings a bit), and I only use every 7-10 days at most. |
