Today is the first day I've been hit with a customs charge. They've charging me $8 CAD on $17.50 US worth of samples. Does this seem right? It seems high to me, I don't get why it's even worth it to charge on such a small package.
I can't pick up the product until tomorrow since my lazy postman didn't even ring the doorbell, just shoved the slip thru the mailbox |

I don't know how they do it. I'll definitely be asking tomorrow when I pick up the package. I made another order for $8 worth of samples...I wonder how much I'll have to pay for it.
I think I'll have to find someone in the US to ship packages to and have them reship them to me as 'gift'.. |

I checked on canada post website. Looks like they charge a $5 handling fee if it's valued at $20 canadian or more. So $17.50 US is $20.35 CAN...what a rip off.

Hi lianne,
In the future you might try and have the company label the package as a gift. (Less complecated) Most companies are willing to do this. Another option is to have them write down the value of the package to below the minimum value that is taxed. You need to check out if canada has a minimum value? (In N. purchases below 25 USD are tax free.)
The tax on imported goods are usually the same percantage as the regular sales + fee.
Hope this helps in future purchases. |

Liss,
Unfortunately this company wouldn't do it for me. I always ask for packages to be marked gift...most will. This is the first time I've been told no and still placed an order. Next time I'll just order enough that the $5 handling fee is worth it. |

I've never been charged by our USPS customs for any of my overseas purchases or gifts that I've received. |

USPS works like Japan post office on customs fees.. technically they SHOULD charge, but because of the volume going through they dont on all.
Usually if an item has a very high value (hundreds of dollars worth) they willstop it and inspect/charge.. and sometimes they do a random choice for charging.
with the courier companies UPS/Fedex/DHL etc., they hve no choice but to charge from the minimum amounts. In Japan I think we are allowed to have up to 10,000 yen free (about US$85), then it is 10% + UPS etc charge 500 yen ($4.25 app.) handling fee. |

I wish canada would be more lenient. All over freaking $0.77! You'd think they'd just let it slide, but NOOOOO! |

perhaps they would be willing to write "promotional" on the customs slip. It's worked for me when purchasing numerous items from the UK. |
