Hi there, I am really frustrated with my hair at the moment and would love any advice. My hair is extremely dry and I have been using a lot of masks lately. The problem is I am using protein masks to strengthen the hair like Nexxus Emergencee, Bumble and Bumble Deep, Frederic Fekkai Overnight Repair and my hair is now really strong and but has a coarse, brittle feel to it. I went out looking for a moisture treatment for the hair, but could not find one, they all seem to contain proteins to strengthen and repair. Could anyone recommend a great moisture treatment for me please? I did a search on the board and it sounds like olive oil could work, but I just don't like the idea of putting it straight on my hair. I am looking for a nice smelling, pleasant to use product. |

Not sure if this will be of any use to you but I also have strong hair that is quite dry especially in the summer when it becomes coarse too. I've recently started using the new Elvive Nutri-Gloss Range - they do shampoo, conditioner and mask - and after just using it twice, I found it made a difference. It does seem to be softer and even shinier. I don't know if the effects will be long lasting because as I said, I've just changed shampoos because the one I had before just wasn't delivering the results I was hoping for. |

Thanks for the advice I was just thinking that one of the drugstore brands might do something like that and these brands usually contain a good helping of silicone which should lock moisture into the hair. That's really great advice and especially worth trying since the products are not too expensive. I'm going to pop out to get the mask now and put it in my hair. I'll let you know how I get on. |

When you use protein masks you MUST follow up with intensive moisture treatments, otherwise the protein treatments are going to leave your hair feeling very dry and "crispy."
THink of it like this: the protein treatments feed and nourish your hair, and the moisture treatments are like water to quench its thirst.
If you keep using the protein treatments without giving your hair a "drink," the dryness you are experiencing is going to continue unabated and will likely get worse. |

This isn't a drugstore brand, but my recommendation for a moisture treatment is this:
carekate wrote: |
Okay, I seriously fried my hair about six weeks ago to the point were it felt sticky when it was wet! It was so bad that I was actually afraid that I’d have to cut it all off and then begin to grow it back out again.
I’d been trying everything I could think of, all the high dollar conditioning treatments plus my own remedies. In desperation, I used a bit of Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Conditioning Balm that I found, long forgotten, stuck in the cabinet under the bathroom sink and it made a huge difference after only one application.
For me to recommend this product is a wonderment in itself because I have gone on the record here and on MUA several times stating that Biolage Cond Balm was crap and that it did absolutely nothing for my hair. Now I have to eat my words because this product literally SAVED my hair!!!
I think part of the reason that I wrote this product off in the past was because the Cond Balm doesn’t contain copious amounts of silicones which mostly serve to make the hair shaft feel slick and slippery, thereby fostering the impression that it has completely “healed” the damage to your hair because it no longer feels all rough and nasty, when – in fact – all those products were doing was temporarily coating the hair with silicones to disguise the damage rather than correct it.
Sure enough, the first time I used the Cond Balm this time, when I rinsed it out my immediate first thought was, “I knew this was a waste of time – my hair doesn’t feel conditioned at all!” But after I towel dried and began to apply my pre-blowdrying styling products, I could see and feel an immediate difference in the health of my hair. After a week of using it (twice as a deep conditioning treatment and the rest of the time as a usual after-shampoo conditioner), the damage to my hair was almost completely repaired.
I owe this Biolage miracle a most humble apology and I take back every bad thing I ever said it and I can confidently and with a completely clear conscious recommend this product to others! |
If that's too expensive, then you can find a great knock-off of Biolage conditioning balm at Sally's Beauty supply under the brand name Biotera Reconstructing Conditioner (click here: http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1215/623520) for about $4.
I think Sauve (yes, Sauve!) also has a version of Biolage CB for a couple bucks, available at any supermarket, drugstore or discount chain like Walmart. |

Thank you very much for being so helpful. Carekate, I saw the post you re-posted and did a bit of search on it prviously and can't find Biolage to be available in the UK... There must be something that I could get hold of quickly and easily that would do the job... Olivia, I have never heard of KPAX either,so I am going to do a search on that and Joico to see what comes up. Meanwhile, I popped out to my local Boots, but they didn't stock the L'oreal mask, so I am not going to put anything in my hair till tomorrow and even skip the overnight treatment tonight. All the products I've got contain proteins, so that is surely what is causing the dryness. Any more product suggestions? |

until you find a better alternative, i wouldn't knock the olive oil.... i think carekate has a mask near the beginning of the DIY thread that mentions mixing olive oil and honey. i did that, mixing in some lavender oil i had on hand, and it really didn't smell bad at all. more importantly, my hair LOVED it. i'd used just straight loive oil before, but i have to tell you -- the addition of honey made all the difference. it worked better at moisturising my hair than many store bought masks. besides, you could always use nice smelling shampoo and condtioner afterwards....
oh, and i seem to remember seeing some biolage products in hair salons in london. you might ring around. |

Thanks la vie en rose, I will have a look around for Biolage products next week when I have some time on my hands to take care of my hair. I love the sound of olive and honey together, but just can't face the prospect of mixing it up over the kitchen sink... There must be a mask with these ingredients - actually I seem to remember there is a honey mask from John Masters Organics - a range I really like. I'll keep an eye out for masks with honey in them too. |

Hi Smoothskin, did I read it right, you're in the UK?
There are several things you can do but I'll add my top picks.
There are two things I know work - Ojon both the shampoo & conditioner are moisturising, the best bit though is using the oil, leave it on for 20 minutes or overnight and wash out the next day. I'm currrently using this treatment once a week you can also use little of the treatment on dry hair to calm the ends.
While my hair is not dry at the roots at last measurement the length is 32" and can feel very dry and brittle. It is expensive but the good thing about QVC is you can use it for a month and if you find it's no good you can send it back and get a refund.
http://www.qvcuk.com/ukgasp/frameset.asp?nest=%2Fukgasp%2FIsItemNumberRedirect.asp&country=uk&txtDesc=ojon
At the other end of the scale is Camellia oil, I use the one I got from goldportbeauty along with me epidermx but I figure and reasonable camellia oil should do. After I've washed my hair I squirt 4-5 pumps of oil in hands and work it through my damp hair. It gives wonderful body without leaving your hair sticky and I highly recommend it if you're on a budget.
3. Suggestion is to change the way you wash your hair.
Condition - wash - condition.
Yep soak your hair, apply conditioner let it sit for a while, lightly shampoo, then condition again. This ensures you don't over strip your hair when you shampoo. It's up to you whether you use a conditioner with silcones in it, some find it creates build up and others find it works perfectly at smoothing the hair.
4. Check your diet. At the least take a multi vitamin/mineral supplement. Lots of things can sap your vitamin levels and it will show in your hair.
Nature's Aid do a hair/skin/nails formula which contains stuff like MSM, Biotin, Silica which are all supposed to help with hair growth & health. There are other brands but those 3 are the key ingredients so shop around.
Hope that's of some help! |

hi smoothskin...i too have dry hair. it is also, thin, brittle, AND bleached. fun fun. anyway, i have tried TONS of different products -from drugstore brands to super expensive brands. they all made my hair even more dry -like straw. i am thankful bc i finally found one that really works on my hair-it is called loreal professional serie expert(the PINK) bottle. it is sold in salons. i use the shampoo and conditioner. i, also (like the previous post), often condition BEFORE shampooing-prior to shampooing, i use a hair oil made buy better botanical. i can use it every day and it never builds up on my hair. when i need extra conditioner, i leave the oil on overnight. you can find this oil in health food stores. i have tried other oils (such as olive oil) and they just made my hair yucky -for lack of a better word. |

I used to use the l'oreal professional brand too. I found them to be really good and after using them a few times, you can really see the difference.
I never knew it's a good idea to condition the hair before applying the shampoo. Thanks for the tip! |

Hi everyone Wow, there are lots of great advice here! I really appreciate all your input and feel like I have a plan to tackle my hair now.
I'll still pass on the olive and honey mixture as the word "slimey" put me off even more but I am sure that could work very well for someone a bit more creative in the kitchen...
Thank you Eve, for taking the time and looking at the problem in such a holistic way. I take all the supplements you mentioned so we are definetely on the same wavelength with those. I have to say that my hair has been bleached to within an inch of it's life so it will probably need a bit of time before these supplements kick in.
I use a very mild shampoo (Klaus Heidegger's All-Sport Every Day Shampoo by Kiehls), but part of the problem could be that as my hair is fine and limp I wash it every day. I think it sound like a lovely treat for the hair to condition-shampoo-condition and can't wait to try that tomorrow. I think that is really great advice. I would also like to get hold of this camelia oil you mentioned - do you have a website for it? I have just run out of the strange smelling argan oil I normally use for all sorts of things and would like to try camelia for a change. I remember looking at the Ojon range of products when it came out and I was really fascinated with it. I can't remember why I didn't buy it so I'll have to check the ingredients again to see if it contains lanolin or beeswax.
Thanks Duffie as well, it looks like several people have had great results with Loreal and I might still try their budget range first (also pink) to see if it delivers. |

This is slightly off topic here but I was just wondering whether anyone has any advice on styling products that I could use on my hair to style it when it's dry? I did try the John Frieda line but they really didn't work for me. They're just too sticky.
Garnier products worked when I was younger but my hair doesn't seem to like them anymore.
Any thoughts? Thanks! |

concerning conditioning before shampooing....i have tried MANY different conditioners before shampooing -and NONE worked to make my hair shiny, moisturized and silky. they all made my hair feel icky (i love this word)....EXCEPT for the better botanical herbal hair oil. this is the only product which works on my hair prior to shampooing-softens without build up. i know everyone's hair is different -but i will be REALLY surprised if it wouldnt work for your hair. i think it is available in the UK. the camellia oil is good too -but it was a little too heavy for my porous thin hair....like many other oils i have tried.
also, i have tried the lower priced loreal shampoos/conditioners -but they all dried out my hair and made it more brittle. the only one that worked is the serie expert ...pricey, but, thankfully, it REALLY works!
one more thing -i also use joico's protect and shine serum -before i blow dry... if i have extra dryness or flyaways, i put it on my dry hair. it has no alcohol -and it makes my hair REALLY soft. i am thankful we can all learn from each other's experiences...i hope you find a cure! |

Have you ever tried L'Oreal shampoo for dry hair? I use it sometimes, it is very cheap and you can get good results from it.

duffie if the conditioner contains any form of silicone I wouldn't recommend pre-conditioning or conditioner only washing with it, as IMO it would lead to way too much build up on the hair making it icky.
I only use about 4-5 drops of camelia oil and my hair is long and thick, I suggest people start with 1-2 and see how it goes if you're planning to leave it on the hair and with the ojon I leave on or add when it's dry about a little finger nails worth.
Smoothskin, you should be able to find camellia oil in a decent health food store but the brand I'm using at the moment is from this store. http://www.goldportbeauty.com/
Aubrey Organics has some decent leave in styling products but you can also use aloe vera gel I get my Aubrey from http://www.theremustbeabetterway.co.uk and our local store has just started selling a small line of their face care so hopefully they'll add haircare soon. |

Thank you so much - I have so much good advice and can't wait to go hunting for these great product recommendations. (probably tomorrow or Wednesday) I am going to a health store to search for camelia oil or Better Botanical Herbal Hair Oil. I think my hair would benefit from a pre-wash treatment. Then I plan to try the L'oreal pink mask (lots of recommendations here for L'oreal), and check the ingredients of these Ojon products and L'occitane, and not to forget. just off to google Pureology to see if it looks familiar. I am pretty sure the oils will be on my shopping list as I prefer products that are paraben and sodium laurel sulphate free. Thank you all so much, I can't wait to go shopping as soon as I shake of this nasty cold. |
