Has anyone ever tried a 1% DHEA cream? I bumped into this web site: www.youngagain.com/anskincream.html
They claim that at this concentration DHEA only acts intradermally and not transdermally. Fooling with hormones scares me but this sounded intriguing. It's supposed to help reverse sun damage, psoriasis, dermatitis, sunburn and brown spots. Does anyone know anything about this- will this in fact not muck around with the body's hormonal balance but only affect the skin?
I'm so thankful to have this forum to turn to with questions, and grateful for all of you for caring enough to take the time to share your knowledge and experiences |

Actually a better url is for this is:
www.lef.org/protocols/prtcl-099a.shtml
There are several pages which are about skin care/nutrition in general and are loaded with good information- the last page under "DHEA and Melatonin" says that a good formulation will contain just enough hormone to benefit the skin without escaping into circulation. |

Hi mimsy - You inspired me to do a little research on DHEA. So far, most of the websites I've found have been commercial ones. I found a few .org sites but want to keep searching when I have the time. The reason I don't entirely trust .com sites is simply because they're obviously selling products and can't be counted on to provide the downsides or risks. But so far, it seems like topical DHEA is safer for the liver than oral DHEA. But it's readily absorbed when used topically so the usual precautions, especially when it comes to dosage, would seem important. Also, common associated side effects I'm reading are acne and facial hair. But I'm not certain if this is with topical or oral administration or both. Glycolic acid products were mentioned to offset acne issues.
I'm 54 and while my skin condition is great, I've noticed thinning since beginning menopause, so something like this that promises to thicken skin makes me sit up and take notice! But I'm very wary of anything hormonal, and cautious in general. Maybe I'm wrong, but I guess I believe there must be a good reason that, as we age, hormone levels drop. But there may be a safe, happy medium, so I look forward to learning more about DHEA! |
