| I use a toner with 7% glycolic acid for some time now for acne treatment. My skin has been dryer in the last few months of using this toner (even after moisturizing) but the glycolic has kept the acne away. I was told by a skin care specialist that glycolic strips the skin when used daily. Well, knowing that daily exfoliation is whats keeping my acne away (since it disappeared after starting using this), would Salicylic acid be any less drying to use daily?? Or possibly a retinol product is better? |

I also fight adult acne. My skin can be nearly clear for long periods, punctuated by horrible, cystic breakouts.
After one of these recent breakouts, I changed my cleansing regimine. I use Neutrogena's deep cleansing, oil free scrub (which contains glycolic acid), followed by Neutrogena toner (with glycolic acid). I proceed to dab problem areas (chin and jaw line) with Benzol Perozide 10% creme.
The results have been awesome. I definitely feel that the Glycolic acid products are key. Salacylic acid never really seemed to work for me as a treatment.
The Glycolic acid products also have faded the post red marks.
What Glycolic acid toner are you using? |

Its the Proactiv toner which has about 7% glycolic and the rest of the ingredients are mild. I know it isnt the cleanser thats drying me out cuz I went several days without it and my skin was still dry, even using a different cleanser that I never had a problem with before I used Proactiv. And I rarely use the Benzoyl Peroxide Lotion. Here's the toner ingredients....minus the Glycolic acid the other ingredients are fairly gentle:
Water, Glycolic Acid 6%, Polysorbate-20, Aloe Vera,Chamomile Extract, Rose Bud Extract, Witch Hazel Extract,Glycerin, Panthenol Allantoin, Hydroxyetghylcellulose, Sodium PCA,Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Sodium Hydroxide,Benzophenone-4, Tetrasodium EDTA, FD & C Blue NO. 1, Fragrance, FD & C Yellow NO. 5
Would maybe cutting down to using the toner every other day help or every 3rd day help with the dryness and still keep the acne away you think?? |

I do use glycolic acid and salicylic acids. They do different things. Glycolic helps to loosen surface cells and salicylic is more antiseptic and can penetrate deeper.
My adult acne along my hairline did not go away until I started using Tazorac and then it disappeared. |

| Well I've sort of found some solution to this problem. I'm using the toner just on the oilier acne prone areas once a day and not using it as often on the lower cheeks where I'm dry. I'm kinda still scared to make the change from glycolics to salicylic for fear the acne will come back. I was gonna maybe start adding a retinoid a couple times a week to maybe try to replace the glycolic. I just dont know if the glycolic acids are as bad as people are saying they are. |

| my skin is pretty sensitive and I can't use salicylic acids at all, but I have no problem using glycolic products. |

Hi,
glycolic products will give you less irritation than salicylic acid. If you have sensitive skin you shouldn't use at all. |

| I used to use 8% glycolic acid but found it a touch too drying so moved to an 8% gluconolactone. I still stayed with my same product with is Neostrata. The gluconolactone does the exact same thing as glycolic acid it is just more gentle, it is better for dry skin. |
