OMG!!! That's totally scarey! Can't seem to trust anybody anymore. I remember getting a burn a few years back using a Coppertone product and I thought I just hadn't applied enough. I don't blame people for suing, esp. when it comes to KIDS! Mad Mad Mad

:X That really makes me angry.

I've used those products before, and sun protection has always been BIG thing for me. It's just unnerving to see that people can put out these products and endanger the lives of people with their inneffective products.

I think they should have included the FDA in that lawsuit. European and Australian medical agencies have known for years that UVA/UVB both had an impact on skin health/protection factors. Yet, the FDA has dragged its feet on letting Mexoryl and Tinosorb get approved for use over here. They have also done nothing to get the PPD rating scale used over here that measures UVA protective factors. They have let the UVB measurement (SPF)stand for years. They also have the power to require manufacturers to label products according to whatever standards the FDA sets. They have done nothing!!!! to change the labeling standards to reflect that reapplication is necessary to insure protection REGARDLESS of sweating/water sports, etc.

The mftrs. will win this one because they will point out that they have followed all the rules set by the FDA when it comes to testing, measuring SPF, and labeling their products.

I say shame on the FDA.

This is something that we have talked about on this forum many times. I thank the forum for making me aware that many sunscreens only protected from UVB rays, otherwise I would have never known. That is fine and dandy for the last five years or so that I have made a point to have full spectrum protection. But it sucks for the 7 or so years before that that I was super careful to wear sunscreen everyday, but unknowing to me, I was not fully protected.

Of course, I had to go back and check if my new beloved Amore Pacific has uva/uvb protection. The shiseido I used before also had full spectrum protection.

betterat40, you are absolutely right to put the final blame on the FDA. Companies, in general, do not do more than they have to. the FDA did not put the bar very high for sun protection. Unfortunately, many were misled by thinking if it met FDA standards, they were covered.

That article was very disturbing. I really want to toss out my Coppertone Sunblock right now.

The FDA is a joke. The people on it vie for appointments to it. They sit on it for a few years and then leave to work for drug companies at high pay. It really isn't much more than a sham.

The FDA and companies should certainly be held responsible if what this suit alleges is true...

However, consumers are not total innocents here. Most people do not reapply sunscreen, even though every bottle I've ever bought indicates that you need to reapply periodically AND after water or sweating. The bottles also say you need to put the sunscreen on 30 minutes before going out into the sun--but most people start slathering on when they're already outside at the beach or pool.

Here in Canada we have a better selection of sunscreens that the U.S., but I still buy my Anthelios off of Ebay, XL version only available in Europe. I don't understand how these new sunscreens are not approved in the U.S.
