I am in the market for a new sewing machine. I'm only learning to sew, but I found it's something I am really enjoying. I want one with all the frills.
One brand I have been browsing is Janome(janome.com). I've also heard Bernina and Pfaff mentioned.
I currently own an inexpensive Singer which sews okay I guess, but since I am to start a quilting class I know it will not have the features I want. Plus the Singer seems kind of loud to me.
Does anyone here sew? Recommendations needed!

I have a husqvarna viking. I was gonna get a pfaff, but for the budget that I wanted to spend, husqvarna had more things than pfaff. Thus I chose husqvarna.
I think it is a pretty good brand. I know somebody who has had hers for years and is still working very well (actually she is the reason why i purchased this brand). They might seem a bit expensive, but If you look around, you can find the simpler model that is cheaper.
let us know what you decide.

Thanks for replying. I had heard Viking mentioned by someone else too, but I don't think I have a Viking retailer near me or I'd look into them further.
Do you sew garments or crafts or both? |

i just sew crafts. Mainly quilting. My sewing machine was one of cheapest model. When I was buying it, I was just learning, hence did not want to spen so much money on something that I possibly dont like. Anyways..... you can get a very good one that has gizillion different stitches. Then, you can have fun with your quilt.

I went to a sewing center today and ended up buying a Janome 6600P sewing machine. It really has a lot of bells and whistles. Now I just hope I can figure them out! They only sold the brand I bought and one called Baby Lock which I understand is mostly for general sewing and embroidery. The Janome is heavier than my old Singer, but there was no way I could ever tote the huge Baby Lock back and forth to my quilting classes.
I hope I made the right decision. |

Not to worry, my aunt in Australia is the quilting queen!
She is SO into it.. she is a member of an international quilting circle and is even into using the PC to screen photos onto fabric to build into the quilt... what does she use? A Janome! I am sure you made a good choice. |

I'd like a recommendations also. I do not want all the bells and whistles I just want to make kids costumes and do some piecing for small quilts. |

tiger_tim - That makes me feel so much better about spending a small fortune on the Janome! I'm sure I'll love it (when I learn how to use it).
sharky - I think, if you don't want all the frills, just be sure to buy a 1/4 inch quilting seam foot to go with whatever machine you decide to buy. From what I gather, quilting seams are always 1/4 inch, so if you get that exact seam allowance everything matches up perfectly. One came with my Janome so I tried it tonight and can see how it can make all the difference for someone inexperienced like me. Probably any machine would be ok for kids costumes. My Singer machine from Walmart was less than $200.
roadtonowhere - I've made a couple of rag quilts so far which really aren't quilts at all, but that's what they said they start beginners out on. Tomorrow night I get to start on my first real quilt. I found a picture on eBay of the one I'm supposed to start on.

They said it was really the easiest and I should have no problems, but they don't know me very well. The picture on eBay really doesn't do it justice because I saw one last week and it's gorgeous in person.
This weekend when I have more time I'll post a pic of my rag quilt. |

I know that Bernina is a good brand. Sewing runs in my family so to speak- Both my mom and grandmother are experts at the art of sewing and tayloring. They both taught sewing for a while and my mom was a taylor for a while as well. My mom grew up making most of her own clothes because she grew up in a big family with a tight budget (my grandparents put their kids through college (luckily it wasn't as expensive back then!)). As for myself, I am not nearly as skilled but want to be very soon. Anyway, my mom also uses her Singer from the 70s as well. I even have an antique Singer that I inherited that was my grandmothers when she was young (but I don't use it though).
There are probably so many more brands out there that both my mom and I are not familiar with that are of great quality. But at least I can recommend Bernina.
