I don't really understand skin lighteners. I have blotchy skin from the sun, from years of not using protection. Sun freckles and uneven skin tone etc. Would skin lighteners be the best treatment for this? Or would the vitamin C be best or something else?
What I don't know about the skin lighteners are how they lighten the dark spots and areas without just relatively lightening all of the skin, making the undamaged areas even lighter then before and still lighter then the darkened freckle areas etc. Does it make you pale? Does it cause uneven blotchiness of color it it's not applied evenly like fake sunless tanners do? Do they damage the skin at all by making it even more sensitive and vulnerable to the sun's rays? What's the best type? Kojic acid? |

melanocytes, which produce melanin are located in the bottom layer of the epidermis. With UV exposure a reaction occurs in your skin and melanin is produced to form a shield to protect the skin and then these cells move toward the surface. If there is too much damage more melanin is prodused and then trapped in the cell, so a darker spot appears. What lighteners do (usually they contain vit. c., kojic acid, liquorice extract...) is break down the melanin trapped in the cells closer to the surface, they don't actually work on the melanocytes themselves which is why your overall colouring remains the same. Lightening products used to contain bleaching ingredient and these products did affect the overall skintone, but these types of ingredients are no longer used.

Thanks so much for clarifying that oli! That made perfect sense. I've been wondering about that for a long time now. Now I just need to find the best, least irritating product out there for this. |
