Yesterday I tried Vivier 10% vitamin C serum, followed by B-5 gel and my regular moisturizer. It didn't burn or anything, but when I was getting ready for bed, I noticed my skin was red, flaky and rough.
Is this normal? Will it eventually stop?

Alohagirl,
I have used the 10% Vivier serum before and I am currently using the 20% version. I have not had a problem with flaky dry skin as a result. I have also not had this reaction with other vitamin C serums though. Mind you my skin is not sensitive and if I remember correctly, your is. It could be an initial reaction that will go away but I think if I were you I would contact the spa directly and ask them for advice.
Have you used other vitamin C serums before? |

Thanks for responding, Mabsy.
No, I haven't tried Vit. C serums before. They're all the rage lately, and I have some sun damage, so I wanted to give it a try. Those dang lemmings again!
I want to know if my reaction is common for first-timers and will soon improve. If so, I'd like to keep using it. I'm convinced Vit. C is a good thing.
I'll take your advice and e-mail EDS directly. |

Hi alohagirl - I just jumped back on the Vit-C bandwagon (yesterday) after a long absence. I'm using Skinceuticals serum 15 as well as the Hydra 5-B and their
Renew Overnight cream. I did notice that my skin seemed somewhat red and slightly irritated- not flaky, though. I'm assuming that it might take some time for my skin to adjust, so will continue to use. I want to improve the moisturizer I use over the serum and the hydra-5 - right now I'm just using up a bottle of Clinique Dramatically Different. Perhaps (for me) an improvement on this front will prevent the slight irritation...what are you using?
On a slightly different note: since hopping on the EDS forum, I've become even more sensitive to how my skin looks and feels. For example, it wasn't until I read a discussion about 'eyes' in the product review section that I finally realized how irritated my eyes always feel and how unpleasant they often look. The point being, that I think I'll be more tuned in to how my skin looks and feels as I continue to use the Skinceutical serum, and will post any progress/problems/solutions - as though everyone is holding their breath! :P

Hi Aloha Girl
I think Mabsy is right - your skin is likely sensitive.
At my first attempt with Vit C, I was "greedy" and started with Cellex C's Advanced Serum (I believe it is a 17.5% strength), my skin got red and sensitive, and tiny little bumps appeared. Like Zazu, I did not give up on the Vit C system, and started on a Cellex C Serum for Sensitive Skin (7.5% strength) - that went on nicely and my skin became brighter and improve considerably. In fact, if there is no adverse reaction, you should see improvement to your skin quite quickly. I next used Skinceuticals Vit C 10 and there was no bad reaction at all. I have now progressed to Primacy Vit C+E. I guess the skin does need some time to get used to the serum. I would suggest that you use less Vit C for a start or use on alternate days to allow your skin to get use to the Vit C. Ultimately, you may want to hear what the aestheticians @ EDS say.
As for the moisturizers, I have mentioned before in other posts - so far, Cellex C's GLA Balm for Dry skin works best for me so far, in addition to Hydra B, if you have dry skin like mine. |

I received a prompt reply from Magda at EDS, and all of you were right. It can take time for skin to adjust to Vitamin C serums because of the low ph. She also said that using Vit. C is similar to suntanning--you don't feel anything at first, but if you overdo it, redness and flakiness show up later.
She advised me to wait for the irritation to subside, then try again and follow with a good hydrating moisturizer. My Orlane Oligo smoothing cream is wonderful, but probably not hydrating enough for use with C-serums. The GLA cream is described as a perfect partner though.
Thanks everyone! |

Thanks for the GLA reminder, all. I laughed at Jenny's comment about being "greedy" .... I totally have that problem. Case in point: I got the serum 15 - and I knew I should have started with the 10. Anyhoo, I think I'll skip the serum a couple of days a week at first and see how that goes. Will give a "red bump report" soon.
I am wondering, actually, if my sensivity has to do with actually using too many drops of the serum. I know you're supposed to only apply a few drops to your face and neck. However, it seems to take me more like 8 drops to cover the full area. I swear, it seems like those first few drops just get sucked in so fast!
Living at altitude in dry Colorado makes my skin such a desperate sponge for anything moist! Thoughts?
ps: I know I need to stop asking questions and start answering some - other than Frownie-related ones! |

Hi Zazu
To continue where I left off about being greedy...... I too used MANY drops of Vit C in the beginning - like you - the end of the story, you know already - red bumps.....
I think you can use a lesser amount, especially on MORE sensitive areas. My nasal-labial area was very sensitive. Alternatively, add 1 to 2 drops of the Hydra B to the Vit C to dilute it.
I also suggest that when you start to resume with Vit C, lay off the RENEW and use another more soothing moisturizer - eg Skinceuticals' Emollience or Cellex C's GLA or maybe Phytomer. I checked Skinceuticals Web Page for you - the RENEW contains 5% hydroxy acids for exfoliation. Although it is only 5%, sensitive skins like ours cannot deal with too much "assault". You can reintroduce the Renew after your skin gets accustomed to Vit C.
If you need more information, you may want to check the Cellex-C website as well. Although it is slightly different from Skinceuticals, the information is more comprehensive and pretty much applicable. Cellex-C only recommends an Alternate night application for their Smooth Skin Complex (which I think is similar to RENEW). Anyhow, when I first applied Smooth Skin Complex, I felt a slight sting as well. So, probably need to go slow on that.
Cheers, Jenny:D |

I, too, wasn't able to make the recommended 3-5 drops of C-serum cover my whole face. It was immediately absorbed by the first place I touched.
The B-5 spreads better, so I'll mix the two. I don't suppose there's any harm in that since they're meant to be used together, right? |

Hmmm- mixing the serum and the Hydra 5 into a broth of their own.... it does seem like a possibly brilliant way to ease my skin into the system.
I totally agree about the Renew. I think I'll follow Jenny's fabulous advice and hold off on using it at least for a little bit. I'm thinking I'll then use the Renew once a week or something. Jenny, you were so sweet to check the Skinceutical's website for me! Thanks so much for your help! |

Hey everyone -- so glad to be part of the gang. My dear friend ZaZu introduced me to the site. I am a proud user of Cellex-C and Skinceuticals for perhaps 6 years. Good skin care and consitency works! As I've advised Zazu, stick to a good, well advised skin care rountine. Be careful not to be seduced by many products -- more is not better. Go for the quality.

Myrna's amazing skin is a testament to the effectiveness of vitamin -c serums. I do look forward to her review of Smooth Beam!

The advice was right on the mark. I've been successfully using Skinceutical 10% Vit. C serum for the past four days with no irritation whatsoever.
Supposedly it's too soon to see results, but my skin really seems to be brighter and healthier now. |

Great! I am sure you will see visible results in a couple of weeks' time. Let us know, OK?
I noticed that my skin profile is about the same as yours, albeit a little older
(sigh....sigh...). I may try out the moisturizers you are using. I am still searching for one that gives me a dewy look - GLA is good. I am trying out Valmont's Regenetic. Will post review once I gather more "empirical evidence".
Cheers! Jenny:) |
