I'm unfit. I'm not fat but I'm out of shape (was going to describe, but on second thoughts I'd better not haha ) I used to do step aerobics, cycle, jog (well brisk walk, really ) but somehow I started missing one day, then two, then weeks would pass without my lifting my, um, behind a single time. I always thought chasing after my young boys was enough exercise...
Anyways - after 5 years (wow it has been that long ) I decided to run again (sure it's less fun than a dance class, but it's free!). I start with a 10 min walk, then run 5 min, turn around and run 5 min more and then walk the rest of my way home. I have since got addicted and run every day. I never run alone, though. I will either have my sister or my two boys on their bicycles with me.
I started running to get back into my jeans (and they're not even skinny, just plain bootleg jeans but they're stuck to my knees! ) but I've discovered running has also boosted my energy levels so I'm not sleepy at midday anymore, nor pant when I run up the stairs. Plus the fresh air clears my head, and I sleep better.
How cool is that?
Any experienced runners here? Tips you want to share?

Hi pumping mummy, good to hear u have taken up running, i have also this past 6 - 8 months and really enjoy it. I think a good motivational tool is to train towards something otherwise u might get bored - well that was just me - i ran my first half marathon on 25/3/06 and loved it and to think 8 months prior the most i could run was for 25 mins. I am now training for another in June - although dont wanna do a full marathon - too much pain involved!!! U could start with a 10km run or a fun run and work from there - i just loved the atmosphere of it all - i have never been good at anything and i seem to have found my niche. Only bad point is that i have gained 2 inches on my thighs and mu bum has gotten bigger so all my jeans are too tight - where is the fairness!!!! My husband tries to console me that it is muscle but it doesnt help.
Anyways hope u continue the good work. |

Good for both of you! I unfortunately can't run even though I'd LOVE to. My knees just can't take the pounding so I have to stick with eliptical machines. I agree that the more you do it the more addicted you get. It's just difficult sometimes to make it that far! I've been unable to do much over the past few months for health reasons, so I'm just starting up again. I just hope I can stick with it too. Of course the fact that I'm going to Mexico in a month and will have to be in a bikini should keep me motivated! |

Run for a marathon?! Gosh I'd never thought of that, Nicky1. I've never seen myself as an athlete and never been into sports - I run only because I'm vain and want to fit nicely in my jeans haha.
But you're right I'm going to need some kind of motivational tool to keep at it, and right now wanting to look good in my clothes should do the job
TAMgirl99 if wearing a bikini can't motivate you to exercise nothing will. |

Congrats on the running! I can totally relate!
Last May I was completely inactive--couldn't run 5 minutes if I wanted to, but somehow got it in my head that I wanted to do an ironman.(too much TV watching!)
So I printed out a walk/run plan (started running just 1 minute, resting 5) and got a hybrid bike. Soon after I got in the pool after over 12 years of avoiding them.
Long story short, I completed my first sprint triathlon 12 weeks later (last summer)! Now, in less than a month I'll finish my first marathon, and I have run 3 half marathons this winter. Then I'll do an olympic distance tri in July and half IM in AUgust. Then, it's Iromnman Placid in 2007.
I'm NOT a huge athlete, just someone who started moving her feet, one step at a time! Like you, I wanted to exercise at first, and now have found something so much greater in return: A more rested spirit, greater sense of self and of course, and an ever shrinking body!
For me, focusing on a race is much more encouraging than stepping on a scale. So far, it's worked! Good luck! |

I have trouble running as I find it places too much strain on the knees also - however, I find fast walking to be really invigorating, and hopefully it's doing some good. I exercise at the gym right now (using the treadmill machines on the uphill setting), but as soon as it gets a bit warmer out I'll be heading outdoors. Can't wait! |
