What To Eat Each Day For Looks And Health

Apple Cider Vinegar
Beside having amazing healing properties, apple cider vinegar keeps skin supple. It's heavy concentration of enzymes helps peel off dead skin cells. It breaks down fat and helps food digest properly.

Carrots
Maintain the outer layer of the skin to prevent premature aging. What you'll find in is the same as you'll get in Retin A.

Cheese
To ensure a happy smile, add a slice or two of hard cheeese into your diet. Choose Swiss, cheddar, or gouda to block bacteria in the mouth and prevent cavities.

Citrus Fruits
Hold the skin cells together by forming collagen. Collagen cannot be added to the skin topically, which is why fruits and fruit juices are such an important part of the daily diet.

Cranberries
Keep urinary tract lining healthy.

Garlic
Helps combat wrinkles and restores tissue.

Nonfat Yogurt
High in calcium, which keeps your smile white and your teeth cavity-free.

Sweet Potatoes Vitamin A is known to be a remarkable anti-wrinkling agent. Sweet potatoes are full of this important vitamin. The pleasing results is clearer, smoother skin.

Tomatoes
These "love apples" will keep you loving your skin. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium.

Wheat Germ
If you want to get rid of pimples quickly and efficiently, make sure to include two or three tablespoons a day in your diet. Add it to cereal, yogurt, and cottage cheese.

You should choose foods that you enjoy, of course, but you need to include the following:

Vegetables
Three to five servings daily. Try to include one serving of raw, leafy greens.

Meat
Have no more than three three ounce servings a day. Cut off all fat. Try to make two servings of turkey or chicken. One serving of fish a day is ideal.

Fruits
Two to three servings daily. A 1/2 cup of chopped or sliced fruit is a serving.

Dairy
At least two servings daily. A serving would be eight ounces of milk or yogurt.

Fats
Salad dressing, cooking oil, butter, and mayonnaise should be limited to two servings a day.



Personally I'd say 2 servings of mayo a day is a BAD idea...

In our house we drink Okinawan Kurosu (black vinegar) which is made from brown rice. We buy the unsweetened and just add 1 tsp to 100ml of apple juice (unsweetened and not from concentrate) ... first thing in the morning.. YUM.

As a summer refresher, 1/2 tblspn of ACV in a glass of perrier etc is really nice too!

Add lots of water and green tea.

As for the yogurt most yougurt has 40gms of sugar per 6 oz. That is far too much there are several studies showing high sugar consumption leads to loss of flexibility in skin and tissues of the internal organs definately not good for the skin. It also leads to diabetes, the fastest growing health problem in the US. Some milkfat is also good for you the vit D and some other things are not absorbed without those fats (I drink 1% milk, lowfat plain yougurt).

I am at the office around 6 hours a day.. in that time I try to consume 1ltr of water and 2 large mugs of green tea.. I used to consume a lot of coffee at work (2 mugs in 6 hours) but I switched to green tea for my caffiene shot seeing as I would at least get the anti-ox benefit as well!

We buy all our drinking water (I think it comes from Canada) as the Tokyo water is SO highly chlorinated that you can smell it. We try to soak charcoal in the bath water before getting in and are about to get a new showerhead that has a filter.

As for yoghurt.. why not make your own? It is easy and you can do non-fat non-sugar and then add your own goodies.

Add macha (powdered green tea), powdered black sesame and kinako (um, powdered soy bean) for a YUMMY treat (does need a bit of sweeting though).

Re brown whey low... we use it for baking things like oat bars, so not a lot gets consumed at once... what about the maple sugar? I guess though, that too does not really get consumed in a big quantity at once..


OH and sleep... yes, I should get more.. but I am a night owl!! (but I do sleep well on the subway going to work and back each day).

Do you get organically grown fruit in Tokyo Tiger? I remember when I was there a few years back I found the fruit to be scary - never seen apples look and taste the way they did (perfection), after a month of lying in the fruit bowl!... Shock

Laughing yea, the fruit can be scarey.. but sometimes that is becuase the farmers play music to it and go out and turn the fruit everyday (that is why watermelon in Japan never has the white/discolored bottom).

There is some organic stuff around, but of course $$$$ (we already pay about $2.50 US for a zucchini in Tokyo!!)

does this include plain yogurt? i've been eating yogurt (nature, they call it) here almost every day for breakfast or as a dessert to try to keep me away from chocolates. there seem to no sweetners in them, just plain fresh yogurt. (sometimes i even get 'brebis,' sheeps' milk yogurt, but it's always just natural....

I use plain yogurt. It does have milk sugars but that's not so bad and it's much less. Looking at my Stonyfield Farms Plain it has 13gms per 8oz versus the 40+gms per 6oz for the flavored ones. I like to mix in my own fruit also. I'd love to try some of the other flavors suggested here.

Bit confused on your yoghurts... are you saying they are sweetened with milk sugars or unsweetened (ie no added sweetener or any nature).

More important than checking the nutrition panel is checking the actual list of ingredients. There should be nothing added for sweetening (any kind of sugars or juices).

In Australia I used to buy Plain, unsweetened yoghurt (very sour!).. but now I just make my own and sweeten with berries or whatever.

Anyone tried Kefir, plain unsweetened? It's pretty good mixed into a smoothy, but by itself it's horrendous Shock I think it's along the same lines as goats milk, not sure though. It has all the "good bacteria" in it--a probiotic liquid. I don't buy it too often as I have to drive across town to get it. Thought I would share with everyone who is looking for the health benefits of yogurt but without all the added sugars!

Kefir is one of the ones I have made here. Also Caspian yoghurt is big here. Very similar to Kefir.

It is quite palatable with the powders, berries etc., but yea, gross on its own.

No I use no sugar added brands but all milk and yogurt has lactose (milk sugar) in it. There are processes to remove it but it doesn't taste as good (Carb control milk). I don't know whether Lactaid milk has lactose removed or something added to help people digest lactose.

I also used to drink Kefir but my health food store closed and I can not get it. It also had no added sugar.

Hi,

Great to read so many great tips!!! Here are a few of my own!!

From what I have experienced I would have to say first thing - especially for the skin is to drink a lot of SPRING water. This is the MOST important thing for our bodies, as water is so important.

The rest is similar to the above: wholefoods, organic, and if you feel you need some quick foods - still try keep it healthy. I find all my food in the health food store. In this way you also support local farmers, and your local economy reather than shop at huge chain stores.


I think everything in moderation, a little yogurt is great, I find Spelt or Kamut is a better flour than wheat (did you know wheat has the most pesticides sprayed on it and the percentage of people who have allergies is 1 in 4 people!!!) Non organic Soy also is highly sprayed and is usually genetically modified (bad). There has been studies done where high amounts of pesticides actually stay in the fatty tissues of the body!!

Sugar is also okay in moderaton. Yet too much sweet foods will actually contribute to Candidia (a yeast we all have in varying degrees in our intestines - it is a bad yeast!!)

GOOD THINGS
-Green Tea, Rooibos Tea and Honeybush Tea - tea is such a wonderful thing after meal, or just to relax. Did you know that if you feel the need to eas something sweet and you drink a cup of green tea - the green tea will help to couter balance the sugar and clear our teeth of sugar!!!

-Probiotics - excellent for the intestins

-Apple cider vinager - great for digestion. If you put 1 cup in a bath (despite the smell) your skin feels amazing!!!

-Multi Vitamins (try to find a whole food brand like New Chapters or Garden of Life)Lack of vitamins can be seen in sallow skin, dry scalp and dull looking hair (we dont always get enough vitamins for our foods). Most affordable supplement shopping iswww.vitacost.com

-As Stress free as possible!!

I like to keep it simple, and have found these things really helpful for my skin and hair, and also to maintain a healthy body.

We have a local BC company, Island Farms, they make a plain 2% yogurt I just love. It's not runny or really rich. But I can't eat their low fat version, it's not as tasty. I think fat gets a bad rap, it's the type of fat that's bad (hydrogenated is the worst imo, even more so than naturally saturated). And I can't even fathom the little bit of milk sugar would be bad for someone (unless you are lactose intolerant). I had absolutely no success making my own yogurt, complete disaster. How do you make it, Tiger?

I was raised on granola, homemade whole grain bread and raw fruits/veggies, we lived on a commune for a time when I was little, my mom was really into natural living. She even made her peanut butter and it wasn't very good! But we ate it. Smile The habits my mom instilled in me are there to this day. I can't eat rich food or white bread, I just feel awful. There is no way I could eat low carb, I love my carbs (complex) and I've never been over weight. (pregnancy NOT with standing!) We also eat organic veggies now and try to stay away from processed foods.

But the number one beauty 'food' is water for me. My forehead lines decrease, my lips are plumper and even my joints feel better. I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and mega doses of water improve both if they are flaring up.
