I have a friend that is 87 years old and she looks great! Recently I asked her how she stays looking so beautiful and she whispered...every morning after I wash my face I rub an ice cube all over my face before I put on my moisturizer. It was so interesting to me...I found myself thinking all night "why would that work...maybe the ice tightened the pores so the moistuizer didnt clog her pores" or "maybe the it made her vessels constrice and it inhibited wrinkles"...anyway...it made me wonder if anyone else does or has heard of similiar tricks. I am espically facinated with the older generations tips becuase they did not have the skin care industy that we have today. |

Wow, that is pretty interesting!
Does she have a favorite lotion and facial wash? |

I asked her that and she said she always uses lancome...different lotions within that line but always lancome. Hum!! I've never tried anything by them. I have tried their Sensation Totale which was nice but not for the price tag. |

I think an actress from the 50's uses ice cube as their beauty secret too... I forgot who... was it Hepburn? |

My grandmother had beautiful skin. I think one of her beauty secrets was to stay out of the sun. We celebrated her 100th birthday at Disneyland and she enjoyed the day in her wheelchair, carrying a big black umbrella. |

Hi aprilha,
I don't know about Hepburn, but Joan Crawford [you know ... Mommy Dearest ...] used to use ice cubes every morning.

Actually, Paul Newman plunged his face in a bowl of ice cubes every morning for up to 5 minutes. He did this for years. I wonder what the ice does? The Stars sure seem to like it! |

I think that I read a few years ago that Naomi and Ashley Judd plunge their face in ice cubes every morning also. It is too cold right now to even try it, but I might in the summer. |

I know that a trick for treating blemished skin is to cool the face with ice and then apply topical moisturizers and/or treatments. This reduces the inflammation in the skin and opens-rather than tightens- the pore to allow more of the beneficial ingredients to get deeper into the skin. So perhaps by cooling her skin first, your friend made it possible for her moisturizers to get deeper into the skin.
Staying out of the sun is DEFINITELY a trick to keep skin looking younger. My mom has stayed out of the sun and worn hats for the last 20-some odd years and she looks 5-10 years younger than her actual age. She has very smooth skin and few wrinkles. The funny thing is, in her 20s she would spend many of her summers baking herself in the sun with no sunscreen and baby oil nonetheless! She would go from fair skin to looking like a Native American. But she never spent more than 2 hours a day in the sun. Ever since I can remember, she has said that she would never dare do that in this day and age. There was so much more protection provided by the ozone layer back then compared to now.
Another thing about my mom... she has always eaten well and taken supplements. Ha-hem, antioxidants, right? |

When I was in high school I was on this acne regimin from an aesthetician: there was a gentle cleanser, a benzol peroxide lotion (that bleached the heck out of my pillow cases--Mom was not happy!), a sulfur based mask (that really stunk) that I used a few times a week, and sunscreen. The woman was adamantly anti-sun
However, the thing she stressed the most as far as treatment was icing my face every night for 5 minutes after cleansing but before putting on my BP.
The routine did clear up my skin, and when my skin has gotten bad in the years since I've thought about icing it again, but it's SO cold, so I never last more than a day or two. |
