I've never used a self tanner before and am wondering how you go about applying it. How long should i leave the tanner on for? |

I love Neutrogena sunless tanner. I use the lotion because I find that the foam type streaks for me. You need to leave it on for at least an hour before you shower or sweat. You just apply it like a lotion but make sure to rub it in well, be really careful around the tops of your hands (that's where I can usually see a line), also wash your palms really well. I use the Neutrogena sunless face tanner for my face because I am very prone to breakouts and find that this works for my face better. |

Okay BCgirl you have me a bit worried. You should rub this in like a lotion and within 10 minutes or so dress and carry on as usual. If you want to shower before you go out, then wait at least an hour like anbloom mentioned. The way you stated that made me picture you with a layer of tanning lotion sitting on your skin (not rubbed in) and then wiping it off after an hour. You shouldn't be able to see or feel it after just a few minutes of rubbing it in, like you would with any other lotion. Good luck and let us know how it turns out! |

Just have to pipe up here and say your post has me a bit worried too, BCgirl.. If you put it on as thick as it sounds and didn't rub it in well, you may end up all splotchy and streaky and so uneven you'll be wearing pants tonight!
Self tanning isn't hard to do, IMO... BUT, you do have to take some care to keep from splotching and streaking.. It may look like a lotion, but you have to remember, THIS SHOWS UP!!!
Good luck.. I've got my fingies crossed for you! |

uh oh now im worried too!!
this is what the instructions say in the back... "The sheer bronze provides a hint of temporary, natural looking color immediately upon application and allows yuou to see where youve applied it to help eliminate mistakes for flawless even coverage. After two hours the sunless tanner develops a natural looking tan that looks like a real tan and fades like a real tan. Oil-free formula absorbs quickly and dries in less than 5 minutes."
I put this tanner on half an hour ago... what should i do?? |

First off, did you rub it in? The 'instant' color is more of a color guide, to help keep you from streaking etc.. But also, as it stated, to give you some instant color... If you rubbed it in well and as evenly as you could, you should be OK..
I think you just made it sound to us, that you were sitting there with globs of it laying on your legs...LOL |

saint tropez sunless tanner (both cream and foam) are so excellent, they are worth every penny. I have olivey skin and this is the ONLY tanner that does not turn me into Jessica Simpson-orange.

That's exactly what I was picturing! I didn't think about a color guide. No, that's fine, you should still see that. It will eventually wash off too or you could just go out like that. The color guide allows you to make sure you put it on evenly, so if it looks good, you should be just fine. Sorry to worry you! |

I know they say you'll see color in 2-4 hours, but I've found it takes longer for it to really develope.. I put it on at night before bed, then by the morning, after washing off the color guide, I have great color.. Give it time, it's still still possible you'll have color..
You may want to try one of the instant bronzers.. They give right away color altho the color doesn't stay on as long or as well... For me anyway... Personally, I don't care for them, but if ya need a quick fix, ya need a quick fix... |

I know some of the products just don't work for me.. Could be a reason.. That and you washed it off, even if it had been on for 2 hours, and they 'say' don't get it wet for an hour.. Those are my only thoughts on it..
My favs are, 1st, ST. Tropez followed by an almost even vote for Fake Bake... I've used Neutorgena foam before and it was OK, but it would take on an orangeish color to it.. The 2 I mentioned don't turn you orange at all.. If you can get past the mess of the color guide rubbing off on your clothes {it washes out of everything, but you'll have permanent lovely peachy color bra straps on a white bra...LOL} and sheets, it's wonderful.. That's why I do it at night...
Don't give up on self tanners.. Sometimes it just takes a while to find the one that works for you... But when you do, you're going to love it... |

Hmm, that's strange that the self tanner didn't work. I could understand the "glow" lotions not appearing to work but a true self tanner should have given you some color at least. I would try it again since you've already invested in it, unless you can take it back. Sometimes these things take more than one application to really notice. I'd also try leaving it on for at least 4 hours if possible.
Hey I'm Kiki, which St. Tropez do you like the best? Lotion, spray, etc.? I've been eyeballing these since I've heard great reviews on this brand.
I'm also wondering if anyone has any suggestions for applying self tanner to your back. This has always been a stumper for me, but the sponge on a stick that comes with the St. Tropez looks like that might do the trick. Any other ideas? |

TAM, I usually use the lotion in the St. Tropez.. I bought the mouse and it turned me kinda green.. I really think it was an old can of it, and that's why, but it spooked me big time...LOL The stick sponge is OK, but they do wear out...
Here's what I do, if there's no one to do my back.. I got a paint stirer stick, from Home Depot, then got a large round foam type makeup sponge.. I think I got that at either Sally or ULTA... A regular size works too, I've used both sizes... Then I stapled it on the paint stick.. It works, but be sure to keep a look out in the mirror so you get covered where you want.. Eventually your sponge does come off just from the use and all the goop on it, but it's cheap to get another sponge.. |

I don't know how anyone could apply self tanner, let dry, and then get dressed and go on about their day! Because I can FEEL that it's on me and smell it too! Not only that, but with the brand that I use (the Neutrogena foam), the color guide will streak with a drop of water or hint of sweat.
I've tried applying self tanner, waiting about 3 or 4 hours, and then showering and going out, and I had the same issue as BCgirl - absolutely NO color! That's why I always use it at night and then sleep with it on and wash it off in the morning.
Stick with it BCgirl, you'll get down a routine that works for you! |

Thanks guys. I guess i'll keep the tanner on for longer this time. Maybe the fact that i do naturally have olive toned skin is he reason why the self-tanner wouldnt show up. |
