I've been on prozac since early 2000. I'm now on low dose 40mg and been trying to go down to 20mg and eventually off it. my hubby and I are thinking of trying to get pregnant sometime in Oct and the parents want me to try to get off prozac when I get pregnant. I was supposed to see a gyno to talk about it but havent got the chance to book for an appointment.
It's been over a week that I'm on 20mg and I am feeling sooo down! Well..I mean life has been a bit tough with work getting really busy and I am also finishing my master degree and all the assignments pilling up. I'm all teary and my co-workers been commenting about how quiet I've been these days. I just wanted to dissapear!! to be gone from the face of the earth!! I dont want to be with people, I hate myself and I even think that nothing is worth living for anymore...which I know is stupid!
Has anyone been on antidepressant while pregnant? |

I've wasn't pregnant but I was taking an anti-depressant while I was finishing my PhD so I can totally appreciate where you're coming from.
In terms of lowering your dose, are you doing that under your doctor's supervision? Not that it's a big deal but sometimes they can give you some support about lowering the dose.
Also remember that it does take a while for any changes in your doseage to affect you, it takes some time for the levels in your blood to get themselves sorted. My adivce would be to stick it out for another week or so but if you are still teary and upset at that stage then go back up to 40mg. Is it really worth not being able to function?
Another couple of questions, and PLEASE don't be offended - are you doing anything else as well as taking the medication? I was also having counselling sessions which (for me) really worked well in combination with the medication. When I came off it I didn't even notice a change which probably indicates that I was over that particular episode plus I had some great strategies to cope with being off it.
Also, do you think you should be thinking about getting pregnant when you're feeling so shite? I couldn't imagine getting myself out of bed when I was particularly bad, let alone having to be pregnant as well. Just a few things that from my experience you might like to consider.
Be well.

Hi Kiwigirl,
Thanks for the advice.
The reason of trying to get off it was because me and my husband have been talking about trying to concieve. I'm trying it now to see if I can cope without prozac.
I was on prozac for depression + eating disorder (I got Ed since early teen. my docs decided its time for meds when it got really bad) My hubby knows I'm on prozac for depression, but he doesnt know about the ED. There's only a handful of people who knows which are my docs and my family. Is it wrong to want to keep it that way?
I used to see a psychologist regularly when things were really bad and gradually things got better and the ED was under control, and I havent seen her (the psy) for probably a couple of years now. Maybe it's time to get back to it.. |

svunt1,
I am on paxil, which I believe is similar to prozac. I was on 20mg and decided to lower my dose due to side effects. Trouble is, any change in dosage has incredible impact. Think of it like all of our discussions of retin-A. There is a HUGE difference between a .025% and a .05% even though it doesn't seem like it. I also didn't bother to ask my doc, but I do know that going from 20mg to 15mg has the same effect as going cold turkey. It backfires. I cut my pills up and lowered to 17.5% first for a month. Then I went down to 15% and am getting used to that. It is a very slow process to get off without dipping too low too quick. HTH. |
