In the thread "what bra do you wear", some of the members said yoga enhances their chest. I totally agree with this from when I took classes, but I'm having a hard time finding a good yoga dvd. If LandB or violetanne are reading this, do you guys go to a yoga class or do you do it at home? I currently have Denise Austin's fat burning yoga, which isn't really yoga and some other one on vhs I can't come up with the name for right now... Which ones do you guys use or can anyone recommend a good yoga dvd? Thanks! |

I tried Ali McGraw's DVD early on and it was so advanced, it turned me off in general... then I tried a few classes and realized that the in-person instruction is really preferable if possible to find in your area. I practice Kripalu yoga at a local studio and a power yoga class at the gym - basically a take on Ashtanga yoga. You can google both kinds and learn the differences. Bikram, on the other hand, is not for me. It doesn't give me the stress relief I'm looking for... in fact, it makes me more stressed. Aside from the length and heat of the class, the repetition of the postures class after class bores me and I can't stand the amount of preparation needed just to get there -several towels, a change of clothes, and all your shower stuff. Bleck.
Maybe buy a few used DVD's on-line and see what one you like? That would be a more cost-effective way to settle on one. |

I absolutely agree with LandB that it's a entirely different experience to practice in class, and would recommend that if it's possible. That being said, with being so busy, I tend to turn to DVDs often, and here are my three favorites.
Everyone's taste in their preferred type of yoga is different, so you may or may not enjoy these as much as I do. I'll include links to the DVDs on Amazon, not to endorse their site, but to show you what the covers look like so you can look out for them in stores near you if you'd like.
I love taking classes with Rodney Yee (so sad that he moved to the East Coast), and my favorite DVD of his is Power Yoga for Stamina. It's short (maybe 25 mins?), but I love it as a quick morning routine. I have seen the individual DVDs in this series in Costco sometimes for very reasonable prices. Here's a link to the pic from Amazon:

The DVD I turn to most often is a wonderful live session from Baron Baptiste called Soul of Strength. It's quite challenging, but I always emerge feeling so energized & empowered after this one. He offers modifications for beginners & yogis with limitations, but you definitely have to make sure you don't go overboard with this one if you don't feel you're ready (it includes some more intermediate poses like Crow and Wheel), but you can make modifications and Child's Pose can be your best friend for the first few times. He has a few cheesy lines in it, but I would definitely recommend this DVD. Here is a link to a pic off Amazon, and I bought this for a friend in my local Target store for about $10.

Another one that I really like but haven't had much chance to use yet is Yoga Shakti by Shiva Rea. It uses an amazing concept that I think should be used more in DVDs...it lets you program which portions you would like to do before you start your practice (you'd choose sun salutations, standing poses, inversions, etc. like choosing tracks on a CD), then the DVD links them together for you. There are also a few set practices that go from 30-90 minutes, if you'd prefer not to choose your sequence yourself. I couldn't find this in stores when I bought it and bought my copy of eBay, but it might be more readily available now. Here's a link to the pic from Amazon:

Hope that helps! Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a billboard, but these are three that I'd highly recommend. Good luck finding some that you love!!! |

I just posted in the bra thread about this! I practice at home as the only studio close to me is very snobby and I just went in there to get a schedule once and felt uncomfortable. But, yeah, I use the Marlon Braccia DVDs. They're not very produced, but I like them because it's just about learning how to do yoga-- no fancy stuff. There's several to choose from (I suggest starting with "For Absolute Beginners" which is somewhat of a deceptive title). She shows you a variety of postures, each routine is well-rounded, but some are specifically for arm strength, flexibility, etc. She also teaches you breathing exercises. I would say her DVDs are the closest to going to a class if going to a class isn't an option. I get them from Amazon as I can't find them in stores.
I've also tried the Wai Lana DVDs, which are just plain weird. |

I don't do Yoga or Pilates at the gym. When I do go to gym I do high impact classes or cycle or weight training.
For Yoga and Pilates at home I really like The "The Hollywood Trainer" dvd series. |

Wow, thanks for all the good recommendations! I really like the idea of the shorter workouts (attention span and all). The Rodney Yee Power Yoga for Stamina got really good reviews on amazon and it's short! I'm checking out all your recommendations on amazon... I just gotta get a new dvd. I went through my old vhs, turns out I have a Lilia tape still in its packaging! I'm gonna pop that one in today and give it a try. It's just called Lilia's Yoga For Better Health. My mother always wanted me to get into yoga (she taught it for years), I never got into it though. Maybe I'll have her come over here and teach me the "correct" way to be doing these videos. That's probably my best bet. Videos AND a live instructor! So I guess I will start yoga today. Here's to a new excercise program... |

Hello!
If you are looking to deepen your yoga experience but haven't gone any further than the Denise Austin tape then I would, (believe it or not), recommend Kathy Smith's Power Yoga - (cant remember the name - it is the advanced tape)...She has a guy named Rod Stryker leading the practice and he is absolutely superb for anyone who wants to move into a more rigorous ashtanga inspired practice. Other more vigorous faves of mine are anything by Baron Baptiste or Bryan Kest. There are some excellent pure ashtanga tapes out there but I find the yogis really dry...oh well...
Good luck and namaste!
