Is there such a thing as too much exfoliation? I started using the aspirin mask lately and love it. I'm also considering getting the clarisonic face brush system because of it's rave reviews. But upon consideration, I'm concerned that using the face brush daily and using the aspirin mask or dermalogica microfoliant would strip my skin too much. Is it possible to over do it on the skin? In my quest for great skin, I always feel like the next new thing will help it. |

I know it's so tempting to try so many new things at once... but you can definitely over-exfoliate. You might get dry scaly patches in areas that have been overkill.
You should wait a few days for dead skin to build up before exfoliating again... perhaps just alternate methods every few days. But if you find there is one particular method that seems to work best for your skin then stick to it! |

exfoliating twice a week is enough for younger skin, three times a week for more mature skin. No need to exfoliate more than that as there hasn't been a build up of dead skin, also you can over stimulate your oil glands, so they produce more oil.

Yes you can strip your skin which then makes it produce more oil and then you have a vicious circle. You can also cause broken capillaries. |

Always follow with a good nourishing cream after exfoliating - it helps your skin deal with the side effects. I exfoliate once or twice a week but also use MD Formulations cleanser which sort of exfoliates daily. |

That's true, I have had broken capillaries around my eyes from this. Best to go easy on the skin and not overdo it. What you don't get with a good exfoliating mask, you can use a cream with glycolic or retinol after cleansing and then put a good moisturizer over it to soften up the skin and help the skin to exfoliate easier. Then when you go to cleanse, the skin will slough off gently from the cream loosening up the dead skin cells. |
