hello, all! I've joined this forum yesterday & am getting so much help for my problematic skin! I would like to ask another question... I would be very grateful if you could help me!
I've been dealing with my super dehydrated but blemish prone skin (which got worse after overdoing aha). I tried so many moisturizers to normalize/ heal my skin, and I realized that my skin does not react very well to moisturizers with mineral oil.
For example, I tried
sisley creme reparatrice (high % mineral oil + shea butter): everyone seems to love it,but I felt that this cream made my skin even tighter.
sisley confort extreme day + night (very high % mineral oil): the same: for the first a few days, felt super nice, but later they sat on top of the skin, and made my skin even drier...
& many others... (similar reaction: surface greasy tight underneath)
Surprisingly I did not break out at all from these moisturizers (in fact, my skin looked pretty fine, just felt uncomfortable). But they just made me feel drier in spite of their emollient texture. Now I have a good luck with decleor balm and lrp toleriane cream (still looking for another moisturizer, though).
I would like to know whether mineral oil is drying in general (creating occlusive barrier instead of nourishing?), or it's just my skin, or it's the formula (lack of moisturebinding ingredients) ...
Thanks for reading this long post & it would be so nice if you could help! TIA... |

Avoid the mineral oil. Yuckky.
I too have dry skin year round. That dry/tight feeling you describe makes me batty! I've found when I exfoliate regularly (2-3x per week) I can use any moisturizer and it works well enough. And when whatever one I happen to be using doesn't seem to be absorbing, I know it's time to slough off some dead skin.
I use Cammelia or Squalene oil then my moisturizer. Really does the trick for me.

I've never heard of Mineral Oil being drying. It sounds like your skin is dehydrated. I might suggest adding something with hydration to your routine such as hyaluronic acid, skinceuticals B5 gel should suffice or perhaps Dermalogica's Hydrating booster. These would be used in addition to your moisturizer. Once your skin has normalized a good AHA will not only help aid in exfoliation but will help achieve moisture balance if not over done. Hope this helps! |

mineral oil itself isn't drying, but it does create a barrier layer on top of you skin which doesn't let moisture in or out.
so if you put a moisturizer on top of mineral oil it won't get to your skin.
however, what it can do it hold moisture in, so if you hydrate your skin with water (a gentle steam or by placing a warm wet washcloth over it) or with a hydrating product, and then put the mineral oil containing product over top, it will hold that hydration in, giving your skin a chance to absorb it.
it's not really good or bad, it all depends on how it's used. |

Well. Mineral oil has very good water binding properties for the skin however its not that exciting to use. Look for emollient ingredients such as glycerin, shea butter, grape seed oil, jobaba oil or hylauronic acid, with a lot of antioxidants. Its a good place to start for dry skins. |

Thanks very much! As you have said, my skin seems to be very dehydrated. In fact, my skin feels less tight/ thirsty when I use moisturizers with high % water + oil (i.e. toleriane cream or decleor hydra floral + neroli: light texture, but for me more hydrating than sisley creams). I will need a moisturizer/ serum for dehydrated skin than for dry skin...
Do you think hydrating toner with HA will help?
& again thanks for all your suggestions! |
