I am going to see a skincare consultant on Monday at a Derms office. I want to be sure to ask the right questions. Like if I do get retin a what strength will be right.
I am 43, lines, wrinkles, sun damage, semi dry skin with occasional breakouts or I am not sloughing like I should and my pores get clogged. Definite hormonal breakouts.I really want to get on a good regimen and make it worth the money I spend. You all have great things to say about so many products, I just get so concerned on which one to try. Any suggestions helpful.

I'm a bit jaded about this... but if the derm's office carries only a few lines of skincare products, they might not deviate from those products in their recommendations. If they're "selling you" a product line, try to get them to break down what properties are in the line that they believe will treat which issue. For example, if they recommend "their" C serum, you could search around for other C serums (probably at a better price) if you really need it. Also ask if they have before and after pictures for whatever product or procedure they're recommending. Be assertive and ask questions. You're paying them good money. |

Be careful about pressure tactics to purchase products. About a year ago, I got serious about my skincare products. I went to a skin clinic, and was sold $300.00 worth of products. When I came home to look everything up, I realized I could buy EVERYTHING online for half what I paid.
This forum is a great resource, plus we now get a discount on products. |

Yeah, that's what I am afraid of. As far as basics go I would like to try to keep it simple. You know, nightime and daytime with a few products. Just which ones I am not sure. I read alot about using the retin A and then C serums, but I am totally clueless, there are sooo many to choose from. Do you use them together or ??? 2nd part..I am getting married this summer on the beach when we are in Maui with family...what to do about the sun..especially using Retin A. |

I'd say, go and listen to what she says about your complexion. Take notes. Write down product recommendations.
We are almost the same age and have alot of the same skin concerns. I like and use the DIY DHHC cleanser, OCM, and aspirin mask. Topical Vit C is a must, I use Retin-A a couple of times a week.
Based on recommendations from this site, SkinMedica TNS recovery is the next product I am going to purchase. Good luck tomorrow and let us know what she says!! |

I will echo the warnings of others here: don't get duped into buying hundreds of dollars worth of skincare products.
I've been in this situation a number of times. They can really almost get aggressive with the pressure to buy, and make you feel like if you don't buy all of a certain product line, you will be doing your skin a disservice or will mess up your results. Just hold your ground, and say that you want to "do your research" and "check around" before making the purchase.
The last time I this happened to me, the woman had lined up 6 products for me and was pretty much ready to cash them all in. The total cost was ovver $200, and I told her I just couldn't afford all of it. I asked if she could recommend cheaper products I could find at the drugstore, or at least guide me in the right direction as far as ingredients go. She wasn't willing to help in that capacity, insisting that her products "were the only ones that worked." It was actually a pretty hostile parting, and she somehow made me feel guilty. Not pleasant.
Just be prepared to be strong going in. |

I would write down all your questions and go through them with the consultant. If she/he recommends certain products, ask for samples first.
Regarding retin-a, I would wait to start using it after your wedding. It takes a while for the skin to get used to the retinoid. Some even experience purging for a few weeks. Hate to see you broken out, flaky, or beet red on your wedding day. |

Ok, so it is a Laser Institute for Aesthetic Medicine. The skincare esthetician is geared toward medical skincare, which I'm not sure exactly what that means. The consult was free this month..I didn't know that -Yeah! So..she said my skin was dry to normal and recommended a treatment plan (of course), but did give me samples. They recommended: Epionce and a line called Prescribed Solutions.(never heard of either, they are both online at those names .com. Epionce - cleanser, toner, Facial Lotion and Lite Lytic Lotion (night only for treating skin texture and imperfections)
Then added for day - Prescribed Solution -Radical Results w/Brightening Booster (Anti-ox with C +E) and night -Bolt of Lightening w/ Firming Booster (skin lightening serum). Soooo, hmmmm. Trying them out. I guess we shall see. Didn't get anything for eyes right now - do need it- millia around eyes. I have good sun damage, brown spots, lines, discoloration...I don't know..I guess we will see OR could go to the other side and just get zapped with lasers. |

Sorry...let me add. Am I any more clearer... Not sure. Kind of wished I could of just seen the doctor or his nurses, but I think that is for the serious stuff. Girl was young, which shouldn't make a difference and has been doing this for 5 years. I always feels a little wierd when they are alot younger than you and you want to be sure they relate (just my thought)Was checking out all the women who work there and their skin...Fabulous. |

Glad you did not have to pay for this so-called "consultation". It sound like she was nothing more than a sales clerk.
You seemed to want to address lines, sundamage and clogged pores. I'm not familiar with the lines she suggested but she did not mention sunscreen! Prevention is the first step! Even if these products work to some extent, you will continue to have the same problems without good sun protection.
If you want your problems addressed by your wedding, it sounds like laser would be the way. And you need a good s/s for that too!
She did not give you a script for Retin-A because she is not a Dr. nor a PA and can't give scripts
There is a ton of information here about products that will address at least some of your issues. It's up to you to decide which to try and then do it. |
