Hey Mabsy -
You already answered this question when I asked about what happened to the ‘Edit’ button after the recent “makeover” on the forum and explained that the Edit button was only visible and accessible in the first several minutes after you post a message and you mentioned that this change was ‘security-related,’ and I was wondering if you could elaborate on that a bit. Exactly what type security issues would be a threat from having the edit button available?
While I *do* sorely miss the edit button, I understand the need to maintain security and privacy on the internet, but I’m totally missing the correlation between the two in this particular situation. I’m sure that once you spell it out, I’ll likely have a “Doh!” moment where I slap my forehead because your response makes perfect sense!!
TIA,
Carrie |

Security was not in the sense of "breaking into the forum" security - one of my reasons was preventing spammers from editing their posts once their content has been edited out, though there are others I'm sure. You may have noticed additional recent measures (or rather not noticed, which was the goal) to make sure the forum is used only by legitimate users and this is also connected.
I do undertand that it is a useful feature when used honestly, but unfortunately not all do this. There should be no need to edit a post at a later time, other than to correct a spelling mistake. In terms of updates, it is preferred that these be done to the actual thread (rather than the post) - which then has the advantage of bringing that thread up (if the post is updated the date doesn't change and nobody sees the update unless they search for the post). Currently, EDS has set 5mins for the edit button, though as I today is some other post, I will ask to get this extended to a bit longer.
I hope that explains it better. |

I too liked the perpetual edit button. Why aren't spammers' accounts just taken away? They couldn't edit their posts if they aren't a member any longer.
That said, I will get used to the missing edit button. I'm great for grammar and spelling mistakes and always found something to fix in my posts, sometimes days later. |

Please see my PM for further explanation of your first question.
I'm not sure if people realise this but there is also a "preview" feature before you submit your posts, and that should help catch any major mistakes. HTH |

I can preview a hundred times and still not detect a mistake until the message is submitted!
Well thanks Mabsy, it's not something EDS-ers can't live without, I'm sure. Once we get used to not having the edit button we'll be fine. |

5 mins isn't alot of time...but if its what we've got, then I'm sure we can make the best of it. I usually preview my posts before I hit the submit button, but one or two typos always sneak by. Now I know to check again right after I hit the submit button. Thanks for the clarification! |

I like the new short-time one. unless we have written a BOOK then I think 5min is enough for edit.
Besides, if you want to check grammer and spelling, just do a "preview" before submitting and you can make corrections before posting.
Another great reason for having a short edit is because if someone comes back later to edit, those edits can be missed if the thread has continued on in the meantime. A second post to clarify a comment or whatever can help make things clear. |

I do understand and don't want to give EDS a hard time, it's the fairest forum on the internet.
I do use preview and still miss mistakes but actually, awhile back I went back to my previous posts and deleted some personal info I had posted and was glad to be able to do that, this was the real reason for my complaint. I understand EDS' new policy though and could really just not post personal info in the first place, live with my mistakes and get used to whole thing which I'm sure I will. |

Actually, if anyone ever posts anything too personal by mistake then please let one of the moderators know and it will be removed. |

We are also planning to add spell checker to "Post a reply" area so it should help with quick fixes of miss-spellings.
Putting aside the fact that removing "Edit" button keeps us less exposed to spammers and gives the trusted Moderators better control over the forums, I personally think that editing context of the old post is a very unfair treatment of all consequent participants in the given thread. That alone was sufficient reason to implement that future. |

Thanks Mabsy, 20 minutes is plenty of time to correct any brain failures I have in typing. |
