What do you eat/drink or don't eat/drink that you think helps or hinders your skin?
I'm trying to eat more "clean" unprocessed foods, fruits and veggies as well as salmon and avoid fried, processed food and alcohol.
Just curious about others! |

I've been trying to clean up my diet as well and I've found that the old standards that my mother always told me work best for health...which is reflected in our skin
Drink lots of water
Oatmeal in the morning
Eat a green veggie with each meal
Cut back on fried foods and excess sugar (I traded soda for water & gave up french fries)
Use real butter instead of margerine (trans fat)
Drink red wine regularly but in moderation and avoid other alcohol.
At least once a week I build a "mega" salad at the grocers salad bar & load it up with the veggies I don't usually get. When salads get boring, I go for vegetarian Indian/Thai to keep my diet interesting. I'm not a vegetarian but limit my red meat to once a week. I've also added a group of supplements to my diets and opt for organic produce when it's available.
Remember to indulge every once in a while, life without dessert is boring.
Can't wait to see everyone's ideas |

I never knew that about wheat germ, I wonder what it is in it that has that effect. I'll give a try though.
Mostly my diet is for overall health and health effects the skin. I don't know exactly which foods are best for the skin, except generally.
Mostly I guess, lots of water and water rich foods, lots of anti-oxidant rich foods and anti-inflammatory foods.
Like, oranges, berries, pomegranates, leafy greens, cucumbers, peppers, avocados, flax seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, ginger, garlic, turmeric, yerba mate etc.
Also oats and bamboo extract have silica. And garlic, radishes, mustard, cabbage and hemp are all high in Sulfer (MSM) which is good for the skin too.
I stick to mostly alkaline and anti-inflammatory organic foods and stay away from acidic and inflammatory foods for the most part. I don't eat any meat or dairy. Never eat fried foods. Never touch sodas, coffee or alcohol. Drink only teas, water, juices and smoothies. Never eat refined sugars or sweeteners (just agave, stevia, dates usually). I try to stay away from vegetable oils in general. Stick to healthy oils like olive, coconut, macadamia nut, avocado etc. And I also try to not eat refined food. I think my biggest cheat is a baguette once a week. I know it's not good for me, but I've got to make some exceptions! |

I first read about the wheat germ in the book I quoted, and I found this article which mentions it as the only home remedy for acne that is taken internally. http://www.bharatbhasha.com/health.php/41591
It's a short article about acne home remedies and the wheat germ is mentioned towards the bottom. I have not tried the wheat germ thing as I don't normally break out, but I did this week so I am going to try to track some of it down at the store. I could use something crunchy in my yogurt anyway. Hopefully it works. |

Ugh, wheat germ! Just so you know, it's not crunchy! My mom used to sneak it into everything. Suddenly my buttermilk pancakes became wheat germ buttermilk pancakes. The fresh french bread out of the oven? Wheat germ french bread! I don't how to describe it-- flaky bits of wheaty stuff. As you can see, I have a particular aversion to wheat germ!
Anyway, I'm suggesting pomegranate juice as a healthy food, dark green veggies, basically anything with lots of vitamin C and antioxidants. Blueberries, fresh spinach.... |

LoL, violetanne, it's that bad huh? I think I'm still gonna give it a go as I like lots of weird foods most don't like. I probably wouldn't like it being shoved down my throat either though.. wheat germ pancakes, wheat germ french bread... LoL... |

I drink lots of green tea, red tea, hyakunencha herb tea, and this great soymilk that is enriched with omega-3s, yay! (The brand is Silk if anyone is interested, and it is delicious!) I also try to eat organic whenever I can. I read somewhere that if you can even make 10 or 20 percent of your diet organic, that's 10 or 20 percent fewer toxins/hormones/chemicals your body is having to process. At my grocery store the organic produce doesn't always look the best, so a lot of the time I just get organic milk, cheese, and eggs and call it a day! |

After eating organic, I can't believe I subsisted so long on non organic foods! I also try to get leafy greens, canteloupe, grapes, nuts and whole grains. My new fave is bread made entirely of sprouted grains. Hubby and I go for the enriched rice milk and since manslayer liz has offered us so much good news on teas lately, I've been trying to switch to less coffee and more green tea. |

Yes, it's that bad! I think my mom was trying to instill in us healthy eating habits (I remember her putting colored sprinkles in plain yogurt, making it turn different colors, just to get us to eat it), and I have to admit it worked.
But I'm still not eating wheat germ.
Even though it's healthy. |

Salmon oil capsules. Great source of omega 3 and essential fatty acids. After prolonged intake, i see a noticable difference in my skin, nails and hair. Hair is much more shinier and resistant to breakage, skin softer and plumper, nails harder. Also lessens my PMS symptoms, which is always a plus. |

What a great thread and full of great info. Fish oil high in EPA & DHA plus CoQ10 will keep your cells, not just skin cells but all cells, full of oxigen and energy. Slows ageing tremendously. Eat within the first hour of getting up in the morning. This really helped me eat healthier and make better choices all day if I do this one thing every day. Organic Apples with Almond Butter. Great healthy snack. |

I drink two glasses of water with lemon each day (now for about two weeks) and can honestly say that this has made an immense difference in my entire body.
Most mornings I eat the following, but it more for internal than external health:
whole plain yogurt, mixed with blueberries, 1 tspn cinnamon, a pinch of turmeric, and agave nectar to taste. Topped with flax meal (here is where I get my omega 3s) and walnuts. This is delicious and it regulates my blood sugar and goes well with my probiotic vitamins. Sometimes I add mango instead of blueberries, but the berries are rich in antioxidants.
Also, I eat raw broccoli stalk whenever I steam broccoli, and it is spicy and delicious (you have to slice into the core to get it), and raw chopped zucchini tossed with mint, olive oil, salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon (let sit out on the counter for about an hour for flavors to meld) AND raw chopped kale, jicama, and radish tossed with olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper is excellent too. Those last two are extremely delicious and extremely healthy. Basically, the more raw foods, the better. but i love my porterhouse steak as well... |

Actually I've been taking linseed oil capsules for thr past 2 weeks now, & I have noticed a fair bit of improvement in my skin. It's normally very dry at this time of the year, i.e. heading towards winter. But it's quite smooth & supple at the moment
Also, great tips avalange, I'll have to try them out! |

btw the yogurt tastes even better if you make it the day before and let it sit--all the flavors will meld. cinnamon is one of the best things to regulate blood sugar, and if you are at all hypoglycemic this is wonderful... flax meal is just ground flaxseed, i think--and it is readily avail in health food stores. on its own it is kind of tasteless but it can add texture to things--which is why i add nuts as well, so there is a variation in texture. |

Great Idea! Actually, I usually make most of my meals on Sunday, for the week, as I put most meals in portions according to ratio's my nutritionist has me on.
The yogurt should be fine if I put it in containers Sunday for the week right? I really do love that idea. Some fruit/yogurt and a 1/2 cup of kashi or oatmeal! YUM! |

Ah, good question, as I recently went out and bought some wheat germ. Never heard of the oil, but I did a google for it and found wheat germ oil is even better for your skin than wheat germ. Here is what I found:
Wheat germ oil: rich in inositol, which enhances metabolism of fats, thereby reducing excretory burden on skin; contains pyridoxine, which enhances peristalsis and thus improves digestion and assimilation of nutrients and elimination of wastes; 1-2 tsp. daily, after meals; may also be rubbed directly onto skin eruptions.
Wheat germ: same benefits as wheat germ oil, but less concentrated; also rich in silicon, which builds strong fingernails and healthy hair.
I have been eating about 2-3 spoons of the wheat germ a day (store it in the freezer to stay fresh). As long as it's fresh I think it tastes really good actually (first time I tried it). I haven't had a breakout in almost two weeks. I don't know if it's from the wheat germ or not though. I think my skin was purging a couple weeks ago and maybe it was the wheat germ that helped.. not really sure though as I don't normally break out. The wheat germ will stay a staple for me though. |
