Ok, so I'm trying to learn to be good to my skin! But I like to be tan int he summer!
What would you recommend to a self-tanning newbie who is terrified of turning orange and being blotchy? I've heard things about moisturizers with a tanning agent in it? Can you use that on your face?
What about that mystic tan or spray on tan?
The only experience I've ever had was in 7th grade when I found my moms tanning lotion. Sure, that was 15 years ago, but I still remember the looks on kids faces after I applied several coats, without exfoliating or washing my hands. Not a pretty picture! |

I personally like the L'oreal Sublime Bronze self-tanning towelettes in medium. They are easy to use and great for travel. |

What colouring of skin do you have? Light/fair skinned people will turn orange from mystic/spray tan. If your skin has pink undertones you'll look orange as well.
A lot of ladies rave about the jergens natural glow moisturizer that has the self tanner in it and builds the tan gradually. There's a special version for the face as well.
There's also a lot of cremes that you can use to get the colour for the day and then wash it off, such as SmashBox Body Lights Lotion. I haven't tried it so I can't tell you if it's glittery or not.
I really like St. Tropez tanning products. Because they are a chocolate brown colour you can see where the lotion has been applied. They do give a lot of colour so application is very important.
Good luck!! |

I like the gel from L'oreal on my fair skin. It smells nice and develops quickly. The problem for me is usually not with the application, more with it fading patchy after a few days. |

I will sing HIGH praises for Fake Bake and ST Tropez as long as I live...
Every other one I've tried, including the 'glow' products, has always given me an orange glow... These two have a true brown color guide, and no matter how often you apply, to get the shade you want, there will be no orange...NONE!
I just tried the Savage Bronze from Sally Beauty, hoping all the raves I've read would be true.. I saw orange, and it didn't blend in well at all on my joint areas, and I een put lotion on before hand... {In fairness, everyone I asked said they didn't see orange with the SB, but I did, and that's all that counted} |

Kiki, you make me laugh with "I saw orange". I know what you mean, though, and I agree that St Tropez is the best colour, perhaps a bit scary for a self tan novice, or maybe not as there is no need to blend and it always turns out right after a shower... |

You should definitely start with a gradual tanner for a few days before you apply a regular self tanner. You have to get used to how to apply it to your body and with a gradual tan you will see the problem areas first, and they will only show up lightly as problems, opposed to if you applied a regular self tanner they would show up as big problems. I really like the vaseline healthy glow lotion. I used it for a week and I must say it is flawless and I am actually too dark for my tastes. I'm just going to start applying it less. As for regular self tanners, St. Tropez is the best. That brown glow. I used to get bottles and bottles of the Dermalogica Protective tan and Fake Bake for free but neither grew on me. The Dermalogica was too light and orangy and the Fake Bake always left me feeling and looking dirty. I did use the Fake Bake for quite some time and got compliments on it but it just looked off on me. My favorite drugstore one is the Bain de Soleil Streakguarde Foam. The chick on the tv show "Lost", Kate, says she uses this stuff. At least she said that in an interview for some magazine I read. I've used it for years on and off, but have been having a hard time finding it recently. Make sure you take a moist washcloth and wipe down your knees and elbow afterwards or they will hold more pigment. Good Luck! |

Thank you guys so much for the responses!
I'm fairly light colored, with Indian in me, so I usually burn first when I tan, but after a day it turns into tan and I get a brown/red color all over--but much darker than most people I am with.
I will start looking into what you have suggested and go slow. At least I've learned to exfoliate since my younger years!!! |

The best ever fake tan for face that I have used is Clarins Liquid Bronze. It's incredibly easy to apply and gives the most natural, non-orange, light tan.
I've never had a single streak or blotch from it and it even smells nice!
Other than that, I'm still working on trying to find the best body fake tan. I'd agree with the suggestion to start off with one of the gradual tans, though. They tend to be more forgiving for beginners.
And please do remember to let us know if you manage to find a fake tan you love - so we can try it! |

i like biotherm, st.tropez and shiseido's self tanners. when i started using fake tans my trick was to wash it off after about 6 hrs, which meant i dodn't get the full colour but then again i didn't get the streaks either, so i was happy

I'm one of those people who love Jergens. It comes in Light, Medium, Medium/Tan (new this year.) It has a slight smell but it doesn't bother me. Like lianne said, the color builds gradually so you can't really mess up, and I've never noticed any patchiness. |

Hey I'm new here, but I was just reading the post about self tanners. I have tried alot of them and do not like them because of the smell that they leave on your skin. Sometimes I can still smell it even after showering the 1st time. However, clinique does have a self tanning cream that does not leave that horrible smell on you and I think it works pretty good. |
