My MIL made the comment recently on how women 40 look rediculous with long hair.
Now I think things have changed a lot since her days but sometimes it is silly. Like Mae West had really long hair into her 80s. AND platinum blonde!
But like Cher who is now what? 58? And goldie Hawn, isn't she 60 now? Jane Seymore has always carried it well.
I plan on having long hair for as long as I can get away with it. In fact, my goal is to have almost waist length hair on my 40th next year.
But When is it time to cut it? Or does it matter? |

I dont think it matters! So long as the hair is in good condition.. I just turned 40 and my hair is down to my shoulder blades - but mind you, I wear it up 99% of the time... |

I second tiger_tim, as long as your hair is in good condition, why not keep it long if you like. I have a friend decided to keep her hair long when she turned 40. One of my sister-in-laws, 47, and her hair is at the 2/3 of her back. Beautiful!!!!, But like tiger_tim, most of the time she wears it up, only put it down for special occassion. |

I think the thinking behind that "no long hair after 40" was that the longer your hair, the more it visually "pulled down" your face. And if your face is starting to sag, you don't want anything that will emphasize it even more. I don't necessarily find that to be true, though. What has more of an effect IMO is whether the length is proportionate. For me (I'm 52), the best visual length is just touching my shoulders. My hair is fine and straight, and if it's any shorter, it just plasters itself to my scalp and makes me look "unbalanced" since I'm pretty tall. I think everyone should go with the length that looks best on them and not worry about their age.
"They" also say that your hair should match your face rather than your chronological age so that's something else to consider. |

I agree that if your hair is in good condition, grow it as long as you want. I have very long hair, have no desire at all to cut it when I turn the big 40. |

What should women do when they hit 40 then? Start wearing incontinence pads incase they pee themselves, buy some of those big furry tartan slippers to help with the bunions and then wait til you die?!
Heck if you've got it, flaunt it! No matter what your age.
One other thing some statistical thing I was listening to the other day said that 75% of women in their 30's now can expect to live to 100, so 40 is nothing! |

I think it depends on the woman and her bone structure. For some women it doesn't complement their features...for others it does. |

Personally, I think a woman can and should do whatever the heck she wants! If you want long hair at 140, then do it... This really got started back with Jackie Kennedy.. She made a remark that woman over 40 shouldn't wear long hair.. Ummmm, have to laugh, she never cut hers!
I just am one to refuse to do what 'they' say.. Who are 'they' anyway!
If you're comfy in your skin, that's really all that matters.. Anyone who wants to judge someone else for their hair length, or whatever, needs to realize that there's people out there doing the same thing to them..
This is why I can not stand that show, What Not To Wear.. It's one or 2 peoples opinions, and that doesn't make it a law...
Sorry about the soap box...LOL I just get on the defensive when people tell others what they should do, because 'someone' said...
Grow your hair as long as you want!!!! |

Hi wenrwdy@aol.com - I had a good laugh about Mae West and Cher They're in a class (or species) by themselves, don't you think??? I don't know how Jane Seymour does it, but I guess with her lovely and delicate face, she can continue to pull-off wearing her hair so very long, and hanging down too!
I'm 54 and still have very long hair. Like others, I hardly ever wear it hanging down but rather in a pony tail or updo, which are classic, classy looks. If I wear it down, like Hope said, I think it accentuates the fact that the lower part of my face isn't as "pert" and firm as it used to be. Whenever it gets bad enough to require a facelift, I'll wear it down again a lot more often after I've gone under the knife!!! But actually, wearing a pony tail or updo is like a mini face lift and that's why I keep it long -- or one reason -- the other being I'm quite lazy and unwilling to spend a lot of time and effort styling my hair. If my hair were medium length or even short, I can't think of a style that would be as flattering or as uplifting as the way I wear it now. I'll reserve extremely short hair for when I can't fake it anymore -- if that ever happens (plastic surgeons take credit cards, don't they?)
One problem with all of this is that pulled-back, slicked-back hair can be more severe looking, and also it really exposes the face. As skincarefreak said, a lot depends on one's features and bone structure.
It doesn't happen often but when it does, I DO think it's scary to see a long fluffy mane of hair from behind and then have the person turn around to reveal an old-looking face. Yikes!!! While many young women and girls still and always will wear long hair, it seems to me that trendier girls and women often have shorter, styled hair. Too much bother for me, though. |

I'm over 40 and I've got short hair BUT that's my personal choice because it suits my face and my lifestyle. I'd never make a generalisation that as soon as a woman turns 40, she should cut her hair short. If you like your hair long regardless of whether it's healthy, frizzy, thick, thinning, blue, green or white - it's your choice and no one should force their opinion on you. |

I will be the big 40 next week, yikes. My naturally curly hair is half way down my back. I too worry about if I should have it shorter and have relied on my friends opinions. They have all assured me that it in no way makes me look old and not to cut it. I know when the time comes that it becomes unflattering they will tell me.

I'm 41, soon to be 42. My hair is semi-long, its almost to my mid back, close to where my bra hits. I don't think age should decide how long my hair is, I decide. |

I haven't had short hair since I was a child and I am just not a short hair person. I feel I will never be one. I can't imagine me ever cutting it short. so I'm glad there are women over 50 even who wear it well. As long as like everyone says it is in good condition and styled well.
I should have just titled this WHEN is it time to cut? I just used 40 b/c of what my MIL said.
Thanks everyone. |

I'm 40 now and my hair is really long (almost to my waist at the back). I'm actually wanting to have it cut to about shoulder length, but not because of my age, more because I'm quite short and I think it looks a bit unbalanced right now. I don't think I'll ever have short hair, I'm definitely a long-haired person. I say you should go for whatever makes you feel good, no matter what your age! |

I'm 51 tall with long, fine hair. I do wear it down. When my chin starts sagging I should cut it but as someone else here said mine is baby fine and just doesn't look good short.
Do what you feel comfortable with. |

I just read an article that said a lot of women look great with long hair after 40--like Demi Moore--and it's a new trend. However, it also said that many people keep it long to try and stay young looking when it doesn't necessarily compliment their face. I'm only 26, but but I let my hair grow VERY long just because I wasn't paying attention. I fianlly cut it, and it looks much healthier--lots of compliments! |

- That's me to a tee! I have very thick hair, and it grows like weeds - before I know it I have a huge mop to deal with. Can't wait to get it cut now, it sooo needs a trim at least. |

I think a layered cut is a great option because it's like having the best of both worlds!! Having shorter layers to frame the face and then the longer ones to give the hair weight and character.
I want to keep my hair on the "long" side for as long as I can get away with it! |

I have long blond hair half way down my back which I keep it healthly looking. I am 45. I just hope no one wants me to cut my hair because I actually see it as something I am proud of and makes me 'feel' younger. |

I think that women over 40 usually cut their hair short because it is easier to maintain if it's shorter. And as you get older, your hair loses it's elasticity, loses it's shinyness, loses volume, and looks really stringy and dry. Those celebrities like Goldie Hawn, Demi Moore etc. have lots of money to spend on hair products, hair stylists, hair extentions etc. so that their hair looks healthy and nice. |
