So i've searched the site for advice on my hair 'situation' with no answer that really fits whats happened to it. So here is a new post for people who know a thing or two about haircoloring/ products and have any advice Very Happy .

To start off, I have a range of medium light to dark brown hair. This means that it has those tones all throughout (weird, I know). So anyway, a while back I, for some odd reason, decided to bleach the top 'layer' of my hair (meaning that its only the visible hair that lies attop my head that was bleached). Obviously, having the color of hair I have, my bleach job turned out pretty yellow, not the whitish/ platinum I was dreaming about Sad . So while it grew out, I kept trying to find some help on the internet of how to get it back to my natural color, or what to do. Yes, going to a salon would have been great, but I'm one of those people who think they can do it all alone, most of the time Brick wall .

So (this was before I found EDS), I found some advice on ivillage.com to put two semipermanent colors on my hair to "restore" the array of colors to my hair. So I did this. Well, its been a while since that time (sorry, I can't remember dates, quite forgetfull Embarassed ). And now, my roots are about 2ish inches showing, if not more. They seem to be pretty dark compared to the color my hair has stuck to lately. So my question is, what should I do? Should I put another semipermanent dye on it? or just permanent color it brown(to match the roots). The reason I'm a little weary of option #2 is because I know that I will be wanting to highlight my hair very soon here. So I'm wondering if having had bleached it and semicolored it 2times and now permanently coloring it, followed by highlighting it would just kill it (would it do the same with semipermanent dye???). Also, how does semipermanent color work, per se? Everyone says that it washes out in about 28 shampoos, etc. In my opinion, I believe it penetrates the hair follicle. Or does it??? Basically, should I be expecting to see the very yellow bleached hair again after a numerous amount of shampoos? Or will my hair stay the color it is now? (its been way past 28 shampoos later, and its still not back to that unsightly yellow color it was bleached to).

This post has gotten so lengthy that I'm starting to forget what else I wanted to ask all of the experienced members of the board. So, if anything comes up, I will post additional info/ questions. Rolling Eyes Sorry for the long read, and thanks to anyone in advance to reading and posting their thoughts/ opinions/ replies/ etc.

from my experiences when you bleach your hair and add darker colours on top they tend to stick more.

If I were you I would go to a salon and get your hair fixed. You mentioned getting some highlights so why not get 2 tones done while you're there, some streaks to darken the lighter hair and the streaks to lighten what you want done.

With all the processing you've done on your own I'd avoid messing it up again. And please TELL the hairdresser what you've done with your hair so they can best determine what to do for you

Well, I was actually planing to do this at home (I've become a highlightling pro Very Happy ). And I thought that my hair was in horrible condition also.

However, I went and got a trim a few weeks ago or so (again, not good with dates) and the hairdresser said that she was very amazed with how healthy my hair was (I made a post about it back then Very Happy ). I then told her that I've done so much to it that I didn't think it was healthy and all she stated was that she did notice the 'aray' of colors on my head, but it seemed as if my hair was perfectly natural in texture, nice and thick, and is perfectly healthy. Which was a great surprise for me to be hearing this about my hair.

So I'm probably leaning more on the side of do it at home rather than go to a salon to get it done.

hmmm...then I don't know what to say!

I learned at 14 not to do my own colouring...I ended up with piss yellow coloured hair. It wasn't pretty!

I just recently decided to go back to brown instead of continuing with the blonde and am liking it. It feels healthier and looks way more natural. I had dark streaks put in so that there's still a bit of blonde, but nobody will notice the roots...

I'm thinking about kind of 'chunking' my hair with a dark brown haircolor (the perminent one I was talking about). However, it would be a hard task since haircolor is pretty thin in consitancy to have it put on a specific place (but I think I've done it before, so I can manage). Hmmm.......

ah-yes. Bleaching the hair. I too have medium-dark brown hair and a number of years ago bleached it, not once, but twice in one summer. My hair was kaput after that. Blondissma can't be the healthiest thing for your hair Wink

I too recommend going to a hair dresser - and one that knows what he/she is doing. One thing I learned, b/c I had dyed my hair so much that summer, when the hair dresser had put the salon dye in, my tips started to turn black (we were dying my hair back to reddish brown) within about 10 minutes. We had to take all the dye out. Fortunately, the rest of my hair had taken the colour.

I couldn't see this at first, until she showed me exactly where my hair was that reddish brown we were dying it and where there was some black. So the untrained (hairdresser) eye might not pick this up until it's too late. I could be wrong with the explanation behind this, but I believe this happens b/c the hair has either lost its elasticity or has become so dead, that any colour applied to it will turn the hair black.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck!!

I don't have any answers about what would be best for you other than to suggest going to a hairdresser. If you are set on doing it yourself try calling customer service at Clairol or Loreal (you can probably get the numbers off of a haircolor box). I have called them in the past after I highlighted my hair and wanted it back to original and they were helpfull.

In response to your questions about semipermanent haircolor it does not really wash out after 28 haircolors. My hairdresser told me this and I have experienced it myself. If you use one of the darker colors it might never completly wash out. Furthermore permanent hair color does not color your hair once and for all, it fades and has to be refreshed.

I always ask questions when I get my hair done, so I'll tell you what I know. Very Happy When you bleached it you essentially stripped pigment out of your hair. Then you dyed it again, right? With semipermanant, which, as I understand it, is color that gradually becomes permanent. It's what you use if, as your hair grows out, you want no line of demarcation. But it's still putting pigment into your hair. You'll never go back to yellow blonde unless you bleach it again. If I were you, I'd just leave it alone. If you really feel the need to do something, I'd continue with the semi perm only on your roots. I wouldn't highlight it unless you plan on toning it afterwards because I can assure you, it will be uneven. I can't even really say how much so-- it seems to me the hair you bleached will be lighter than your roots since its base color is blonde, not brown.

I mean, how long ago did did you bleach it? How much new growth do you have? I would semi perm your roots, leave the rest alone, highlight, then plan on toning it to get a natural look. But believe me, a couple hours and $60 at the salon is always worth it!
