Has anyone had problems with mold growing in the oil?
I put my olive oil/castor oil mix in a cleaned out pump bottle of neutrogena cleanser. I usually use the oil just to take my makup off or on my lashes for conditioning. But when I pumped some out last night, I saw little black specks. I was afraid it was mold growing so I didn't use it.
Does mold even grow in oil?

I've never had this problem. I think that olive oil has antibacterial properties so this is really wierd. Is it possible that the black specks were from something else?
Anything is possible. If you pump it out again with black specks, I would look at it under a strong magnifying glass so you can see better what it might be. If it is mold, I would buy everything new and make a fresh batch including using a different bottle for storing. |

Glass bottles are better all round for storage! Amber or Cobalt.

Hi TooInvolved,
Oils can go rancid ... but I've never seen mold in oil ... ever. By this I mean that I've seen bottle of oil in my kitchen that are years old ... and they may be rancid ... but never moldy.
Mold suggests that something else is mixed in with the oil ... whether it's because the container still had something in it ... or somehow some other contamination has gotten in.
I wouldn't bother trying to figure it out, frankly [but then I'm rather impatient at the best of times ] ... I'd just start from scratch ... wash the container thoroughly [the dishwasher would probably be a good bet] ... sterilize it ... and then remix the oils.
Hope this helps.

Hi, guys-
I didn't notice any rust. The black specks seemed organic not like something hard. If I had a microscope, I might be tempted to look out of curiosity, but I don't. I'll probably just chuck the batch and get a cobalt bottle as rec'd. Thanks! |
