Is self-tanner bad for your skin? I always thought Self-tanner is better than UV rays, but now i'm not so sure if self-tanner can be all that good for your skin. So is self-tanner good or bad for skin?

Self-tanners all use a variety of chemicals to essentially dye your skin. Whether it's good or bad depends on how your skin reacts and how you personally feel about the use of chemicals.

Some people eschew all but the most natural of products, since whatever you put on your body is absorbed into your body.

I think though, if you want to be tan it's probably better to use self-tanners because of the documented risks of skin cancer and the aging effects of too much sun.

I too always wonder about this, all the chemicals your skin must be soaking up from the self tanning products, my skin always feels different if I apply a natural ingredient body lotion rather than a self tanning one, whatever brand I try I always get that 'tight' feeling after applying self tan.
I think Green People do a natural ingredient based self tanner.

I avoid putting chemicals on my skin, too...but I think a sun-tan is worse. There are natural-ish self-tanners out there...one is by lavera and i think the other by kiss my face.

I recently read in Reader's Digests Extradinary Uses for ordinary things book that you can brew up two cups of strong black tea, put it in a spray bottle and spray yourself down with it for a natural looking natural self tan. I haven't tried it yet, don't know how it would work, but I do plan on trying it. Here is the link:

It's in the middle of the list.

I read that too!

I think it just works (if it works) as a dye. Tea will stain your teeth and your teacups, so why not your skin? I wonder how long-lasting it would be.

PhoebesMeow, this is great info! I would've never thought of using tea as a self-tanner, but it makes sense now that I've read the links...

Thanks for posting this!

I think that self tanner is probably not too bad for the skin, but not exactly great either. It can cause reactions to the chemicals in some people (like me Embarassed ). Others can get a great looking tan, lucky ducks Wink . Either way, you probably won't get a type of cancer from it (as when you could when tanning outdoors) but it will be interesting to see if people who have self tanned developed any sort of 'illness' from them, because of the chemicals. Only time will tell Neutral .

The idea of tanning your skin with tea kind of intrigues me Smile . I've tried self tanners before and products like Jergens Natural Glow. However, I think my skin has a horrible reaction to an agent that chemically 'dyes' the skin, for my legs have gotten bumpy, itchy and swollen after using self tanner Confused .

So I guess the tea idea sounds like a great alternative. I really don't think it would last long though, since it is a natural ingredient of sorts. If anyone has tried this or will, please let us know of the type of results you get. I'm very interested. I need to get a spray bottle Very Happy (so I can try it as well).

I'm just reading this thread and haven't gotten to the articles yet.. I am sooooo curious now about this.. Who's going to be the first to try it and report back???? I would but with the wedding in a week, I sure don't want to take any chances.. I'd be the one who'd screw it up or get some awful reaction!

I've been very curious about the Henna self tan product put out by Madflowers, posted by someone in an earlier thread.. Haven't broke down and ordered it yet... Has anyone tried that?

What about the one from Alba Botanicals. I think it's more natural. I really like the color it gives. I use it sometimes on my face.

I tested it out (the first recipe, just the tea, no oils) and posted a thread on it.

Can't say I was all that impressed but I'm not that pale to start with.
