I just finished up my bottle of body scrub that came with a self tanning kit and I'm in need of another non-oily one. I make up my own body exfoliators from sugars, oils, and such, but found the oily ones interfere with the self tanners. Does anyone know of a recipe to make up a scrub that is not oily? I checked the recipe thread, but they all include oil.... any ideas? |

I've no idea as to whether this would work well, but could you add some exfoliating grain-type stuff to yoghurt instead of oil? |

Ah! Great ideas on the aloe gel and the yogurt! I never thought of that. I'll probably try the aloe gel first since its a bit cheaper and throw in some sugar and wheat germ. I bet that will work well, thank you. |

Hi PhoebesMeow! I often have the same problem--- I don't actually use self-tanner, but I am always looking for non-oily body scrubs because I don't like the greasy feel of the oily ones. Right now I have two that I'm using that are just WONDERFUL! They're both warming, and they smell great and leave no residue: Bath and Body Works Island Hot Spot Warming Body Scrub (smells like coconut milk...yum!!!!), and Freeman Totally Juicy Hot Sugar Scrub in Apple. The apple scrub is super cheap (under 4 bucks) and you can either get it at drugstores, or at drugstore.com. (It also has glycolic acid in it for extra exfoliation.) I would recommend either of these scrubs 100%. There's one more scrub that I have not yet tried, but I've heard really good things about it, and that's Organic Bath Co's Daily Body Scrub in White Tea. It's supposed to smell really good and be really non-greasy. HTH! |

I love nothing more than a creamy soap or shower gel used with a good pair of exfoliating gloves, it is a lot less messy and really good for the circulation. |

I love using the fine ground almonds that are used in the homemade Dr. H CC. They exfoliate wonderfully, they're not greasy and they leave your skin unbelievably soft. You could also add essential oils for fragrance, but the ground almond meal is great by itself. |

The CSRx Polishing Grains are finely ground azuki beans. They are not suspended in any solution so you can use them with (or without) any product you choose. They are great for getting dead skin off and making elbows and knees smooth again. |

rosebud - You're back! Did you have a great time in Florida?
Sorry, back on-topic now...
Actually, I was inspired by all the talk of exfoliating gloves and stuff, and managed to find an old net scrunchy exfoliating thing that I've had for years and never ever used. Although I've always used stuff like Clarins Body Exfoliator, oily sugar scrubs or my favourite Sisley Exfoliator, I have to say that the cheapy old scrunchy outperformed all of them very impressively.
I am now officially converted to this new, much cheaper way of exfoliating. In fact, the Dermalogica Ultimate Buffing Cloth, which has been raved about on here, is next on my wishlist.
So save yourself some money and just buy a glove, scrunchy or cloth! |

I want to thank everyone for their great suggestions. Yesterday I went to Walmart looking for some exfoliating gloves or the Freeman Green Apple scrub that I tried about a year ago and forgot all about until Manslayerliz reminded me of it. Next to the gloves was a long handled natural boar bristle brush. At first I thought it was a dry brush (which I've been looking for), but the tag said it was to be used with a body wash wet. It was only a dollar so I picked it up. It detachs from its long handle and can be used just holding it. I used it today and wow my skin is exfoliated! What a great find! I haven't been this exfoliated in awhile! I'm not sure if I'll get the benefits of dry brushing since I'm using it wet, but either way, I'm happy with it, plus I don't have to keep putting out money when a exfoliating product runs out. I highly recommend this product for exfoliating before applying a self tanning product! |

Yep! And just think of all that money we've been needlessly wasting on exfoliators! Blimey, I could kick myself!
Now we can use that exfoliator money on other skincare stuff! |

Honey with rice powder makes a nice body scrub. I used to by HUGE bottles of honey just for scrub use. Being sticky it is easier to exfoliate with than yoghurt, which can fall off easy. Try doing a blend of honey and aloe vera gel .. mmm.. that sounds nice... |

The thing that I found made my skin really soft was natural yoghurt. I'd spoon some out of the tub and put it in a bowl. I'd run a bath and before getting in the tub I'd smear myself in yoghurt (oh, what a mental picture, hehe). One thing I did find is that straight from the fridge it's awful cold. So maybe let it sit a while.
I thought this worked better than simply adding the yoghurt to the bath water. I smear myself and then soak in the tub for a bit with some teabags on my eyes (ohhh so attractive!).
My skin felt so great afterwards. Of course I got out of the bath and had a shower afterwards.
