Hello ,
I've been reading alot about the different kinds of aspirin mask but was curious to how aspirin helps the skin. Is it only aspirin that should be used. Why not tylenol? (Sorry if it's a silly question)
Been wanting to try this but hesitant due to that my skin easily breaks out.
If anyone could explain this to me, I'd really appreciate it. TIA |

I'm sure someone else can go into a lot more detail than me but aspirin is actually salicylic acid. Ever look at the ingredients on most of your skincare products that fight acne? Most contain salicylic acid usually in 2%. Salicylic acid is an excellent exfoliator as well as for fighting blemishs. Aspirin is just the natural form of this chemical. Tylenol is actually acetaminophen... completely different chemical. |

Thank you so much, PhoebesMeow.
I never knew this, I just learned something today. All excited about it. Then I'll probably try some of the mask that's posted. Thanks again! |

I have learned so much from you all on the DIY skin care recipes but this is one I've been a little shy to ask about -- I'm glad someone did it for me!
Here's another question along that line. I am almost 37 weeks pregnant. Once the baby comes, I am planning on nursing. In both situations, a woman can't take aspirin internally because of the whole Reye's Syndrome situation. What I am curious about is, I know that skin absorbs chemicals real easy. Does that mean I shouldn't even attempt this mask? I'm beginning to think that if I did it cautiously and left it on for only short amounts of time, I most likely would be OK. Of course, I wouldn't think about trying it until the baby is actually out just to be safe. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I haven't been able to control my acne with any great success in 6 years because of the whole pregnant/nursing situation (I had to give up all my prescription remedies). Now, with all your help, I am doing the OCM, Dr. H products, rose hip seed oil, aloe vera and vitamin c. My skin is finally looking decent. This aspirin mask just sounds wonderful so I'd love to give it a try but, then again, if it's better to wait, I will. |

EllyP.. I would say NO do not use the mask. If you make it and don't make it gooey enough you actually inhale some of it (at least in my experiences). It causes me to sneeze sometimes too. I read that if you have sensitivities to aspirin or are allergic to it not to use this mask. I don't know if I read that on this board as the aspirin mask recipe is all over the internet. I mean you probably COULD use it safely if you were extra careful with it but why take the chances? I sneezed like crazy the first time I used it and it was flaking off all over the place! Skin looked nice but it was messy. I just have to make it thicker and have a better binder to not have that problem. |

Hi EllyP,
This is a question that you would really have to ask your doctor or specialist. You do absorb a small amount of asprin through your skin and also likely some through your mouth and nose, and although it's probably negligible, I think it's always better to be safe than sorry.
I personally know two people (my sister for one) with an asprin allergy which can cause them to bleed internally, so there is NO safe amount for them and they completely avoid it to avoid any issues, which would include the mask.
HTH's! |

PhoebesMeow and melissa49 -
Yes, both of your answers help a lot! I am SUPER careful about my skin care products because of the whole pregnancy/lactation issue. Heck, I haven't even used benzoil peroxide in years because my dermatologist wanted to be conservative and safe. I've also eliminated a lot of chemical additives lately (parabens and several others I can't remember how to spell at the moment ) to be safe as well.
Soooooo....you all are a sane voice about this issue. I so wanted to try it because I am so tired of my splotchy skin but, once again, I will be careful about what I do. I will just have to wait until I'm done nursing (and I nurse so long too *sigh*). That's just the way it goes! Thanks so much for your help!! It's always better to err on the side of caution with little ones. |
