In my earlier "Sick of worrying about the sun!" post I mentioned I was going to Hawaii soon.
Well, as much as I am "sick of worrying about the sun," I don't want to be flat-out foolish about this trip, so I was wondering if you guys could give me some tips.
I'm currently on Retin A, and I obviously will stop using that while I'm down there. I'm just wondering, though, would it be OK for me to just stop as soon as I'm down there or should I stop a few days before, or...?
Also of concern: I recently went through a series of microdermabrasions to treat acne scars (actually, my last one is this week). I've heard that microderm makes your skin more sensitive to the sun and I'm worried about that. Any special precautions I should take on that front? |

Hi Janis
Some of us in high UV index areas were discussing the use of acids and Retin A in the summer months in an earlier thread.
Unfortunately Retin A, microdermabrasion and acids all compromise the skin barrier and thin the epidermis slightly all of which makes you a bit more sun-sensitive. I've looked around and one source suggested it only makes your skin sensitive enough to need an additional SPF 8 to compensate and I suspect you'll be using higher than that on the beach. I have no idea how they calculate this SPF - it seems a bit arbitrary to me.
Anyway, the conclusion of most of us is that we lay off or slow down with the use of all of those items in the summer.
I would suggest you do the same in preparation for your holiday. Give your skin a few weeks rest and use some natural healing products. Natural oils, anti-inflammatories (e.g. ALA, emu, raspberry seed oil etc.)
You won't look quite so fresh skinned, but it's only for a few weeks.
