An apt heading I think. Today is my 50th BD, I'm going through MAJOR hormonal changes (couldn't sleep last night & kept throwing off sheets) & failed my driving test..I was too nervous. I thought the stars were aligned but I'm so down I can't even respond to an interesting IS Clinical thread on the skin forum. My kids are going to be disappointed. I don't even know what I'm doing getting a licence now, but where I moved to, you need to drive for a carton of milk!
Don't mean to get anyone down, I'll feel better later it's just that I needed to vent.
Just out of curiosity, how many out there around my age failed their driving test the first time. You can white lie just to make me feel better. Thanks. |

Happy Birthday!!!
Now stop all this and go enjoy youself!
Marina my MIL turned 50 earlier this year and believe me she is younger now than she was last year, I feel like the sensible oldie!!!
She was so depressed leading up to her birthday about turning 50 but then thought sod it, I know all about these hot sweats....I hear about 'the pending menopause' so much I feel as though I am going through it myself and I am only in my mid 20's!!
Oh and the driving, she passed her test when she was in her 20s but has never driven, she is the first one to admit she can't drive a car....you are not alone, but just because you are 50 it is not too late to lear.
Oh and I failed my test twice...shhh, who cares we can always take it again!! Besides they have to fail us right, how else would they make any extra money of us! |

Awwww Marina, don't let this stuff get you down! Hell, girl, it's your birthday -- put on your dancing shoes!!! I mean, why drive when you can dance? Besides, you can always take another test. I failed two roadtests before I got my license, although admittedly I was still in school and also took the roadtest in NYC, which was probably insane. I still get a nervous stomach dodging NYC cabbies!
Seriously though:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINA !!! |

Hi Marina! Well, I'm a bit younger, BUT I will tell you that the first time I took my driving test, I failed MISERABLY! Oh man, from the very minute the instructor got in the car things started to go wrong. I tried to take off the parking brake, and it was stuck, and the guy who was testing me started frowning and writing all this stuff down and I got all worked up and nervous, and it only got worse from there. So at the end, he was just like "You failed!" That's it, no sympathy at all!! You better believe I cried right there on the spot! (Serves him right!) Driving is hard--- even now I'm terrible at it! But don't give up--- you'll be amazed at how much easier it will be next time you take your test!! We have faith in you!^-^ |

Turning 50 sucks, but look on the bright side Marina, its better than the alternative
I took my driving tests when I was 21 and failed 4 times, so don't feel so bad. I finally passed on the 5th try - I got the guy who failed me on the 1st try and I still remember him saying "are you still here"

Happy Birthday Marina!!!
I'm sorry you are feeling low. I say go take the test again, your nerves may not bother you so much since you've done it once already. My brother didn't get his license until was in his 30s, he failed the learners part a few times! He's a smart, smart guy but just had a mental block about driving. When will they let you do it again? I just about failed mine too, squeaked by just barely. |

Thanks everybody for cheering me up.. what a great board..skincare & therapy.
As for the road test, yes I can take again & again, but must wait a month between tries. But, I'm, not getting any younger. My husband promised he'll help me practice & he'll be
nicer this time
manslayerliz (love the name!) the same thing happened to me. I think I failed in the first 3 minutes-I misunderstood an instruction-he gave me a look & started taking notes. It was all over. After that, I just kept making small mistakes which wouldn't have cost me the test but my nerves were frazzled & them made bigger ones esp. with reverse parking. My instructor told me I was lucky enough to get the toughest evaluator too-naturally Hopefully, the 2nd time will be the charm. My girls took it hard. Visions of mall shopping for clothes (without their old fashioned father)are gone for a while. Just hope I get the blasted thing before my 15 year old does.
Katee-a little Greek dancing may be what I need this weekend to cheer me up but I'm afraid I'll start wheezing in the middle of a zorba.
Again, thanks everybody for your best wishes. |

Happy Birthday!!!!!! I hope your day and mood improves. You know, I failed my first driving test as well (and that was for an automatic!) because I was just too nervous. I made so many silly mistakes (eg. examiner told me to turn left, I turned right) but it was great the second time around. So, just hold your head up high and go and do it again! |

Yikes!! I didn't want to admit it becuz I felt so stupid-but yes, that's what I did in the first 2 minutes-going to turn left & stayed in the left lane when he gave me the "look" and said I told you to turn right. The I had to move over 3 lanes to get to the right lane& the blind spot checking didn't go so well..you get the idea Oh Lord! That's when nothing could be salvaged. Needless to say, I've done the same route with my instructor at least 10 times with no problem. Starting to feel better... |

Happy Birthday and remember tomorrow will be a brand new day!!!
I failed my 1st test too when I was 24. I got kicked out 1 min after I started my engine. There was a car double parked in the parking lot and while backin up I bumped that stupid car. My car moved about 3 feet and my speed was about 5 mile/hour. My score was 0. |

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINA
I turned the bit 4-0 a couple weeks ago, so I can sympathize with the aging point (but I would like to say that from YOUR pics I have seen here I would have thought you around early 40s).
OK, now about the driving...I used to work with this guy, who granted wasn't 50, BUT, he failed his license SEVEN times. He finally got it on the 8th, but we all figured he must have put $50 in the glovebox.
I got my licence at 17 (lord knows how I passed on the first go), but since living in Japan I only drive twice a year (when I visit parents and run to the shops). If I took a test again now, I would FAIL miserably - especially on reversing and reverse parking. |

Too funny! I went to school with a guy who took seven goes to get his driver's lincence (manual) AND then took another 5 or 6 (can't remember) to get his motorcycle licence years later. He always got too nearvous and stuffed up. Everyone always joked that it was a substantial investment (I can't remember how much the tests are but they're around $200 I think - we don't have to wait a month in between afaik). |

I did it!!! I Passed the dang blasted driving test. I've been a nervous wreck for the last couple of weeks. Second time was the charm...I'm relieved because each time you don't make it you have to wait 3 weeks before you can even reschedule a test and in summer, the wait for an appointment can be over a month-all the young, uns are out getting their license
I'm just relieved I no longer have to practice with hubby-eeek! what a nightmare. Now I need a car. My hubby insists if I cut back on skincare we can afford the monthlies on a new car...tough choice
p.s. love the spell check |

Congrats on the 50th & passing your driving test. And take it from someone who has to enforce traffic laws. A license only makes you a legal driver, not a good one. Personally, I think Cracker Jacks is still giving them out as a prize. Geeze....
Oh - on the 50 thing. I'll be 41 very soon. I work with a LOT of very young guys, who have informed me that 40 is now the new 20! So, going along those lines you're 30 again! Yippee!! |

I failed my driver's test the first time, when I was 17. The second time, I knew what to expect, and was a bit calmer. But I still don't like driving!
if it makes you feel better, marina, my grandmother is 75 and has never gotten behind the wheel of a car. Way to go, and I'm sure you'll pass the next time! |

Congratulations on the licence but please tell hubby that skincare is a must for your self esteem and harmony in the marriage. To a woman, skin care is as important as food (well it is food for the skin). Maybe not a new car but a used one that is near new which still allows you to have your much needed pocket money? |

Thanks everybody! I'm just glad it's over with. When you're young, you know you have the time..when you're 50 it's more like now or never. It's been hanging over my head for a long time. My hubby knew I had to be pushed to do it-so we moved to an area where I can walk 10 minutes to the outlets to buy clothes & see a movie-but I have to drive to get milk!
When my 14 year old wants to go to the mall for clothes-daddy takes her. Then I get frantic calls from her-something about daddy wanting her to dress like a nun..at least now I'll take care of that before they hurt each other
As for skincare-I'll never give it up-it's the only reason I don't look 50 (o.k. some good genes)! It's funny, after I graduated I became a stockbroker (this from a person who hates stress & really dosen't like math). I did well-then the crash of ,89 came. I was pregnant & decided to stay home & raise my kids since the stress was too much. BTW raising teenagers is 10X more stressful than being s stockbroker. In short, with me at home, sometimes I have to borrow from Peter to pay Paul. Perhaps a part-time job is in order-just to pay for my goodies.
Hey I can DRIVE there!!! |

Congratulations marina!
I still can't drive and everyone, my family, my friends, keep lecturing me about it. I got so nervous behind the wheel! |
