Hello!
I am currently working in Advertising and I'm thinking about making a change and going to Cosmetology school. I'm really nervous because all the reading I have been doing says I would cut my salary in half but there are a lot of benefits too!
Has anyone gone to Cosmetology school through Aveda? Or anywhere else? Any suggestions? Good or bad oppinions on the career? |

Hi Olivia,
I have 2 aunts that are in that field, one is a hair stylist (owns her own shop and she makes $$$) and the other one is a manicurist (owns her own shop too and makes good $$$). My mom had been working as an electrical tech for 15 years than got laid off. Everyone told her to continue looking for the same type of job, she was bored of it. I told her do something different and that you will like. Told her to go into cosmetology. She likes what she's doing but she's working at Supercut, they don't pay that much (compare to other places) but she has benefits and overall she's happy now.
I went to cosmetology school during my summer years in high school (junior year). I totally loved it, thought I would make it a career but my dad said nope, your going to college. I would love to go back to cosmetology school, to me it was fun. Hmm...got me thinking...
If it's something that your truly interested and you know you have the skills and you know you'll be happy doing it as a career, than go for it. I think you might be able to go part time too, to see if you'll like it. It'll just take longer.
Goodluck! |

Ha!~ My mom and dad made me go to college...I have 2 degrees and I'm not working with either of them!
I want to open my own place...but the classes take a year and the aveda school in Michigan is $12,000! My husband and I went through the numbers last night and it will be really tight...money wise if I went to school. Ugh! Decisions...decisions. I just know that I hate what I do and I love hair/skincare/makeup...! |

Hmm..only if our parents had seen our passion..we might have been very successful..
I'm not using my degree either. Sad but oh well. hehe
Aren't there other schools that might be cheaper. Didn't know that it was that expensive. Is this a private school just for cosmetology? Do they have financial aid?
The worst is to be in a job that you don't like. But if you have that passion for hair/skincare/makeup, than this may be your calling. But there will be sacrifices which you said would be financially. Overall, follow what your heart desire. We only live once.
I should take my own advice.
I might. hehe |

You are soooo right! Aveda cosmetology is $12,000 for the program but I'm sure there are other schools that are cheaper. I just like the aveda's concept.
My parents are NOT thrilled with the idea of me going into cosmetology. My mom got her license when my sister and I were babies so she could put my dad through college so she stopped and sold her shop once she didnt have to work anymore. It frustrates them that I would leave a good job to do it. Oh well! We dont live for our parents!!! |

It's always great to have a good paying job but what if your not happy, which it seems like you are not. Maybe your mom thinks how difficult it was for her and doesn't want you to experience that, or they see it as a career that's not lucrative. But that's not the case at all. But it seems like your husband is supportive of this potential career change for you right? |

oh and since i hire a lot of stylist my opinion is paul mitchell school is the best. or vidal sassoon. both expensive but they really teach how to make it in the hair world not just how to chop on hair. |

Thank you so much for all the support. I'm going to check on those schools that you recommended. My husband is very supportive so I am very lucky.
Thanks again! |
